Too weird or too common

I’ve been thinking about boy names recently and a lot of the ones I like have been becoming more common like [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and [name_u]Jude[/name_u]. I hate common names. At school there was 2 [name_f]Chloe[/name_f]'s, 3 [name_u]Shannon[/name_u]'s, 2 [name_f]Amy[/name_f]'s, 2 [name_f]Megan[/name_f]'s, and 2 [name_f]Emma[/name_f]'s in my class. I don’t want my kids having to grow up being referred to as [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] S or [name_m]Connor[/name_m] M. But at they same time I know what it’s like to have a name no one can pronounce. My name is [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f], pronounced Aylee, like [name_f]Haylee[/name_f] but without the h. Its a Scottish name and its pretty well known in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f] but I grew up in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f]. [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] has its fair share of oddly spelled names yet I have still to come across someone who can pronounce it correctly the first time. And I got called eyelid a lot, which wasn’t fun.
So back to boy names. I have fallen in love with the name [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]. And it’s not very common. But is it too weird? I can just imagine my mom’s face. I also like names like [name_u]Jude[/name_u] and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] as I said. Here are some of the names I like: [name_u]Toby[/name_u], [name_u]Marley[/name_u], [name_u]Dexter[/name_u], [name_m]Zeke[/name_m], [name_m]Rufus[/name_m], [name_m]Reuben[/name_m], [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], [name_u]Flynn[/name_u], [name_m]Romeo[/name_m], [name_u]Finn[/name_u], [name_u]Jesse[/name_u], [name_m]Jonah[/name_m], [name_u]Rex[/name_u], [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Phineas[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Amos[/name_m] and [name_m]Orson[/name_m]. Names like [name_u]Noah[/name_u] are becoming way too common for me. I need a few suggestions on other uncommon names yet I don’t want them too weird. I would gladly call my kid [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] or [name_m]Forrest[/name_m] or [name_m]Archer[/name_m] yet I think most people I know would think I’m crazy. So should say to hell with everyone else and pick a name that I like or just go with a not so crazy but uncommon name? All suggestions appreciated.

Here’s the thing, no matter how unique of a name you think you’re picking there’s still a chance someone else in your kids life will also have it and they’ll spend time around each other. That can’t be prevented 100%. There’s also a chance that you’ll pick a common name and there won’t be any others in your kids life. I was a [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] growing up in the 80’s and I didn’t meet another one until college!
So, how would you feel if you went with [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] only to find out that in his second grade class there’s another [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]! Or what if you still love [name_u]Jude[/name_u] in 7 years and haven’t met a single one in all that time. Use the name you love, there are far worse things in life than meeting another person with your name–in fact, it can be a fun connection. None of the names you’ve listed are so popular that I can imagine you meeting dozens. Go with what you love!

We seem to have a pretty similar taste in boy’s names so I’ll give you some of mine that you haven’t already listed.

I think all of these are pretty usable even though they’re not that common. I think as long as the name is relatively familiar and can be easily spelt and said it should work okay. I understand wanting a more unusual name as I’m a [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and even though I love my name I know so many and want something less common for my own children. At least we now have the benefit of name rankings. My parents didn’t and thought my name was relatively uncommon as they’d never met a [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] before.

I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]!!

I’m not a fan of [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]. I seem to find that I don’t mind as much popularity wise with my boys names. I am not afraid to like [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] whereas on my girls list, I like [name_f]Julia[/name_f] but doubt her a lot due to popularity.

[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]- love for a girl
[name_u]Toby[/name_u]- like
[name_u]Marley[/name_u]- too girly
[name_u]Dexter[/name_u]- dont like
[name_m]Zeke[/name_m]- dont like
[name_m]Rufus[/name_m]- too wierd
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m]- too wierd
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m]- too stuffy
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u]- like
[name_m]Romeo[/name_m]- too wierd
[name_u]Finn[/name_u]- very common but i like it
[name_u]Jesse[/name_u]- too common
[name_m]Jonah[/name_m]- too common
[name_u]Rex[/name_u]- neutral
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u]- too common
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m]- too common
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]- too wierd
[name_m]Phineas[/name_m]- too wierd- [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] and [name_m]Phineas[/name_m] are ghosts in the Haunted Mansion at Disney World
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]- too sesame street
[name_m]Amos[/name_m]- too wierd
[name_m]Orson[/name_m]- too wierd

My favorite of the names you listed is [name_m]Archer[/name_m]. It’s uncommon but I love it and don’t think its too wierd.

I don’t find [name_u]Marley[/name_u] girly at all. (I don’t like it, though) The first things that I associate with [name_u]Marley[/name_u] are [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] [name_u]Marley[/name_u] and [name_m]Bob[/name_m] [name_u]Marley[/name_u], both men. Most of the ones you find weird I also find weird, except [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]. I don’t think its weird but I never would use it.

I actually love Forrest and see it as a classic name, not a weird name! Once I got over the Tom Hanks movie reference it was added to my short list :). On the other side, I also love Henry. I was fighting with the popularity of the name but in the end its better to go with something you love. I know moms who have picked a less popular name that they ‘liked’ and then even that name became popular…so then they had a popular named they loved less than the original one
. go with your heart. Stop watching the popularity lists.

Something my husband and I have been doing is talking to my belly while we’re laying in bed…or pretending to talk to our little baby as if she or he is born. Some names we had on our lists immediately didn’t feel right even though we liked them. Try saying them aloud to your sweet baby to be and go with what feels right or makes your heart churn st the thought of someday holding “Baby ______”.

Also have to add that I think [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] is a beautiful middle name. Its a great first name too but I jUST love strong MN’s  [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u], for example, is such a wonderful combination of soft and strong. I also love the names [name_u]Toby[/name_u], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], and [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]. Honestly, I see nothing wrong or embarrassing with ANY of the names you listed above. Although [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] really makes me hungry for a sandwich
