So…my list is a smidgen over the limit my boyfriend and I agreed on (about 24 names too many…oops? And I even took some off the list already!). Since I got some seriously AMAZING help on my other thread, I’m hoping I can get some again?
From my list, which are your top 20? I know that some of the names seem very nickname-like but I really like that (and apparently it’s popular in the UK?)
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps! I kept the ones that were my favorite.
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f]- love the sound of this, has a very classical feel but still very modern
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]- love this name! so elegant but funky [name_f]IMO[/name_f]
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f]- beautiful sounding
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]- like, but not my fave
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]- so cute! [name_f]Emmie[/name_f]/[name_f]Emmy[/name_f]/[name_f]Emme[/name_f]- I prefer the first spelling, and I love this name!
[name_f]Evie[/name_f]- cute, but not my fave
[name_f]Hattie[/name_f]- adorable, but is it practical?
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]- cute, but see above [name_f]Isla[/name_f]- amazing, short & sweet! perfect
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]- cute but is it the best? [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]- love this name!!!
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] – love the nickname [name_f]Emme[/name_f] with this one.
[name_f]Edie[/name_f]
[name_f]Evie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] – love the nn [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] with this one.
Top of the top: [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Camilla[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Isla[/name_f]
If you don’t have a top 20 that’s fine; I just need to make sure I do before we discuss our lists! (We decided on 20 names each and then to go through the lists)
Other names I like, but didn’t make my top twenty: [name_f]Amelie[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Honora[/name_f], [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f].
From your list, these are my favorites. I’ve also bolded and commented on my favorites of the favorites. I’m not really a fan of the short nickname-y names for first names, because I guess just don’t quite understand why you wouldn’t just go ahead and give the full name?
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
[name_f]Bronwen[/name_f]/[name_f]Bronwyn[/name_f] [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] - I’ve always loved this name and the nickname [name_f]Mila[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] this name, but very Disney princess at the moment [name_f]Freya[/name_f] - I just think this is a stunning name
[name_f]Gracie[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - Very cute and on trend
[name_f]Honora[/name_f] [name_f]India[/name_f] - I love this name, but don’t think I could never use it so I prefer [name_f]Indira[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] - Beautiful name and gets to an [name_u]Issy[/name_u]/[name_u]Izzy[/name_u] nickname without using [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - Very cute [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] - Absolutely love this name, but would struggle with the namesake
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]
[name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]
I’m kind of the opposite of you; I don’t get why you would need a longer version of a name if you never plan on using it? There are some names on my list that will work for nicknames, but that’s because I love both names (such as [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] or [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]/[name_f]Emmie[/name_f])
Some of the names already have longer versions on my list; but for the most part I don’t like the longer versions because I don’t love them. To be honest, I don’t see the point in using a longer form of a name if you don’t love it and never use it. Thanks for the longer form ideas; but I won’t be using them. With the exception of the few on my list that have both a full/nickname that I love, I don’t really want to change the list a whole lot
I am named after my great-grandmother whose name was nick-namy. She talked my parents into using a longer version and just calling me by the nick name version because she always wished her name was the longer form.
I feel the opposite from her. I wish the name on my birth certificate was the nick-namey version because I never ever use the full name (I hardly identify with it). If I didn’t like my name it would be nice to have another option, but otherwise it’s just adds extra hassles such as correcting people (I worry I sound rude), and accidentally using the short form on documents. But, I can understand both viewpoints.
[name_f]Ada[/name_f] - Has really grown on me lately. Sleek, feminine and substantial.
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f] - Gets a lot of heat thanks to [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] Shand but I’d like to see it make a comeback [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Emme[/name_f] nn [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] - A good compromise since you love those -ie endings. Plus, it has great nns-- Fliss, [name_f]Flick[/name_f], [name_f]Cricket[/name_f]…
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Kitty[/name_f] - I’m generally opposed to nns as first names, but [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] and [name_f]Kitty[/name_f] are the major exceptions.
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Minnie[/name_f] - See [name_f]Kitty[/name_f]. I could actually see a [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Minnie[/name_f]; I think it works for pretty much any M name. [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]
[name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] [name_f]Viola[/name_f] - [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite name ever I love seeing it on people’s lists.
I’d eliminate:
[name_u]Darcy[/name_u]/[name_f]Darcie[/name_f] - Feels boring and a bit homely next to your other options.
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] - It’s nice, but I’d prefer it as a nickname for something longer. [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] or [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]?
[name_f]Evie[/name_f] - See [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]. I can almost see [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] nn [name_f]Evie[/name_f].
[name_f]Gracie[/name_f] - This one even more than your other nickname-names just doesn’t feel right on its own to me.
[name_f]Hattie[/name_f] - Too frumpy for me. [name_m]Just[/name_m] personal preference.
[name_f]India[/name_f] - [name_f]Lovely[/name_f], but not worth the controversy [name_f]IMO[/name_f].
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f] - Makes me think of a shallow, bitchy schoolgirl antagonist in a novel set in Victorian times.
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - Like with [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], I just find its sound/image too drab.
[name_f]Millie[/name_f] - Once again, like it but mainly as a nn. Maybe [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] or [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f]?
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] - Again just personal preference, but the sound is too plain for me and the “-earl” part vaguely unpleasant.
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] - I’m in the “it makes me think of grandfathers” camp. Plus I don’t like the sound.
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] - See [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] again. Since you have [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] on your list, I’d go for [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] nn [name_f]Rosie[/name_f].
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] - I’ve just never liked this name. The “tab” part sounds hideous to me.
All the others I’m completely neutral about. I’m not much of a nickname-names person, but I think objectively/within the larger confines of society [name_f]Kitty[/name_f], [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f] and maybe [name_f]Millie[/name_f] could still stand on their own.
I think my opinion probably comes from the fact that I go by a cutesy nickname (similar to some of the ones on your list), but I also like the option of using my longer full name. I like my nickname among friends and family, but honestly I would never want any of my work colleagues calling me by it. I’m young and work in a very male-dominated engineering field and I know I would feel totally out of place with a cute nickname. I think it’s nice to have the option to go by a full name. [name_m]Just[/name_m] my personal opinion though.
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Evie[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f] [name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Hattie[/name_f]- really prefer it as a nn for [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lola[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Millie[/name_f]- much nicer than [name_f]Millicent[/name_f], I think. [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f]
[name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] [name_f]Viola[/name_f]
I would have loved [name_f]Grace[/name_f], with [name_f]Gracie[/name_f] as a nn!
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]- only as a nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]- only as a nickname for [name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Kitty[/name_f]- only as a nickname for [name_f]Katarina[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], etc.
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f]- only as a nickname for [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] or [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]
And to complete the 20:
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]India[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
As you can tell, I’m not a fan of nicknamey full names. [name_f]My[/name_f] favourites, right now anyways! are, in order:
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], and [name_f]Mable[/name_f]. [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] and [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] are both guilty pleasures of mine.
