Top 5

I would really appreciate some thoughts on my girls/boys Top 5 lists. Suggestions are also super welcome.

Girls: (in no particular order)
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
(I also quite like [name_f]Vera[/name_f])

Potential middles: [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Elaine[/name_f], [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f]

Boys: (" ")
[name_m]Edwin[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]

Potential middles: [name_m]Robert[/name_m], [name_m]Keith[/name_m]

I like ALL of your names (and that’s rarity for me! :)).

Girls

I think these first names work with the following mn choices:

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] or [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Ada[/name_f]/[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f]/[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f]

Other Suggestions

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]/[name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]

Boys

With the exception of [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], your boys names flow best with [name_m]Keith[/name_m] in the middle spot.

[name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m]

Other Suggestions

[name_m]Duncan[/name_m]
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m]
[name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m]
[name_m]Leopold[/name_m]
[name_m]Edgar[/name_m]
[name_u]Leland[/name_u]
[name_m]Harold[/name_m]
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m]
[name_u]Constantine[/name_u]
[name_m]Richard[/name_m]
[name_m]George[/name_m]
[name_m]Franklin[/name_m]

[name_f]My[/name_f] top two girl and boy names are [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], and [name_m]Desmond[/name_m].

Some combos I really like are -

[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] - I also like [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] - [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]
[name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Walter[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]

@mischa - Thank-you! I love your suggestions of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]. [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is a name I WANT to like (especially since I love [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]). From your boys’ suggestions, I like [name_m]Duncan[/name_m] and [name_u]Leland[/name_u] - both names I’d never considered before. Your suggestion of [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] made me smile…I have a cat named [name_m]Edgar[/name_m]! A I also appreciated your fn/mn combos…and I agree, [name_m]Keith[/name_m] DOES go best, though a first son would have to have [name_m]Robert[/name_m] in the middle.

@ lovemysweeties - Thanks for your ideas  [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] is always hovering around my first/second favourite boys’ name lately.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites are [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f], [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], and [name_f]Eleanor/name_f [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f]. But I don’t think you could go wrong with any of them as they are all nice

I also love [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] but not really with any of those names for some reason perhaps [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], Or [name_f]Mae[/name_f]?

For the boys I like [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], and [name_m]Walter[/name_m]…

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u]!
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u]!
[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u]! (Can’t really go wrong with [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f])
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] - [name_f]My[/name_f] Great Granny’s name, sounds very old woman to me, plus Scooby Doo, plus reminds me of daffy… I don’t like it so much.
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] - I really love [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], but personally can’t stand [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], so that would be a drawback for me, since it seems kind of inevitable. Would be great mn, though.
[name_f]Vera[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u]!

[name_m]Edwin[/name_m] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] it, but don’t like [name_m]Ed[/name_m] or [name_m]Eddie[/name_m], would be deal-breaker for me. Would make an awesome mn, though.
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - [name_u]Love[/name_u]!
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] - [name_u]Love[/name_u]!
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] - This is too old man for my tastes.
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m] - Too old man for me.

Overall I think you have great taste and you can’t go far wrong. If I were picking from your list I think I’d go for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]. They go great together also, both classic and Germanic.

Based on your choices, maybe you might like?:
[name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_m]Leonard[/name_m], [name_m]Russell[/name_m], [name_m]Roland[/name_m], [name_m]Donald[/name_m].

You have a strong and gorgeous Top 5 for both girls and boys. I especially love seeing [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] and [name_m]Walter[/name_m].
The standout combinations to me would be [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Elaine[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f], [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m], and [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m]

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite girl’s names are [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], so they are definitely my favourites from your girls list. You can’t go wrong with [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] or [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] either. [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] so it does look odd with an ‘S’ to me and I think most people would spell it wrong. [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Ada[/name_f] would be beautiful, and maybe [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f]?

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is the stand out boy’s name, while I do like [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] too.

Wow - by and large - these are super lists. I love all the girl names, they’re fantastic, and that includes [name_f]Vera[/name_f].

From the boy list, the only one I’m not keen on is [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], but it isn’t a bad name. I’m just not personally keen on it.

The girl’s names- including [name_f]Vera[/name_f]- are all stunning. You have excellent taste!

Like the PP said, I’m not a huge [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] fan, but it isn’t without it’s charm. I’ve also never been partial to the name [name_m]Keith[/name_m], but I think it works well in your combos.

Thank-you all for your comments. I appreciate all the feedback!

I also love the suggestions of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], [name_m]Julian[/name_m] and [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m]. Many names suggested so far have been so lovely, but the lastname I’ve got to work with is tricky (sounds awful with names that end in an “s” sound, like [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] or [name_f]Iris[/name_f]). Additionally, it’s hard for me to expand my lists, as I’m a teacher. So many names become so tied to one particular student that I couldn’t picture using it myself on my own child.

I’m surprised and delighted that my lists are getting so much positive feedback! [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] is the name on my boys’ list that I am the most unsure of, and the comments so far seem to reflect that.

Anyway, I’d love so more suggestions! Thanks Berries, you’re the best

Lately, [name_f]Enid[/name_f] keeps popping into my mind. And, shockingly, my partner actually likes it. Thoughts on [name_f]Enid[/name_f]? What names “go” with [name_f]Enid[/name_f] (as siblings, or as middles?) And does [name_f]Enid[/name_f] work with any of my other favourites?

[name_f]Enid[/name_f]?!

I simply adore [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]!
[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] are lovely but not for me.

I like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] or [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Ada[/name_f].

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] all of your boys names except [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]. [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] are my favourites.

I like [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] or [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m].

Thanks for your comments freddiethepink! [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] is probably my favourite combination at the moment (even though using [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] would mean giving up [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]). I also really like [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] together.

Although [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] are probably my top names for boy/girl siblings, I have no idea what I’d choose for [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]'s brother, or [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]'s sister. Any thoughts Berries?

I like all your girls’ names! [name_f]My[/name_f] order of preference goes like this:

[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]

I’d probably opt for [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] as a middle name for each of those except [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]. [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] just doesn’t sound right to me, but [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] sounds great. And I quite like the name [name_f]Vera[/name_f] as well!

Your boys’ names are generally not my style, so I’m not sure my thoughts are especially helpful there. But for what it’s worth, here’s my order of preference:

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
[name_m]Edwin[/name_m]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]

The only name I truly dislike is [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]. I know a lot of Berries like it, so just consider me a weird outlier! I like [name_m]Robert[/name_m] as a mn with [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], and [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], and prefer [name_m]Keith[/name_m] with [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Walter[/name_m].

As a sister for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], I like [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. I’m usually not one to go for cute, but having available sibling nn [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] and [name_f]Trix[/name_f] is pretty appealing.

As a brother for [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], I think [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] sounds best.

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - love love love! Would use it in a heartbeat if it weren’t so popular (it’s in the top 20 here in Australia). I have only positive associations with [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]! MN: [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] or [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] - gorgeous!
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] - my number one at the moment! I think [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] would make the BEST sister set  MN: [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Ada[/name_f]!
[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] - beautiful but slightly boring for me. [name_u]Love[/name_u] this spelling though! MN: [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Ada[/name_f] is gorgeous and unexpected.
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] - gorgeous! I slightly prefer [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] (which I consider similar) except for the popularity. MN I love [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_f]Elaine[/name_f].
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] - absolutely adore this name. I think it’s beautiful through and through. MN I would go [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f].

Boys:
[name_m]Edwin[/name_m] - really like it. However, my favourite [name_m]Ed[/name_m]- name is [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] MN: [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] is incredibly handsome!
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - absolutely love! [name_f]My[/name_f] pup is called [name_m]Fred/name_m but that only makes me love the name more! ([name_m]Don[/name_m]'t worry, it’s not a dog’s name at all! We just have eccentric taste in naming animals!) MN: [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] - the ‘K’ of [name_m]Keith[/name_m] would run into the end of [name_m]Frederick[/name_m].
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] - love love love! Perfect name. I saw a thread the other day about [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] nn [name_m]Hart[/name_m] and it made me fall even HARDER in love with [name_m]Arthur[/name_m].
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] - I like it, but not as much as the first three. MN: [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] - I think [name_m]Keith[/name_m] would make it too ‘th’-heavy. MN: [name_m]Walter[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m] - not a huge fan I’m afraid. Sorry! MN: [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] [name_m]Keith[/name_m].

Thank-you everyone for your suggestions, comments, and first/middle combinations.

I love the suggestion of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Ada[/name_f] together as sisters - really beautiful and meaningful combinations for me - and I think that [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] are my current top picks for boys’ names.

@jem - I love that you have a dog named [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]! Doesn’t put me off the name at all. And I don’t find it eccentric…I have a cat named [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] myself. And, I never would have thought of [name_m]Hart[/name_m] as a nn for [name_m]Arthur[/name_m].

@freya_1984 - [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] and [name_f]Trix[/name_f]! I think I love it!

Anyone - thoughts/opinions on [name_f]Enid[/name_f]? Does she fit with my other favourites?

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] it. I think it’s impossible to have grown up in the 90s/early 2000s and not love [name_f]Matilda[/name_f].
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] - Also love it. It’s in my top 5, too! The X just makes it so bold and fun. [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Ada[/name_f] is a stunning combo.
[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] - Like it. I probably wouldn’t use it in a sibset with your other names, but I do like the S spelling and would use it in the middle.
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] - I like this one, but I’d be worried that it’s a little insubstantial and can sometimes feel shallow/ultra-girly.
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] - Classic, and goes well with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. Also happens to be my best friend’s name, so I almost have to like it on principle.
[name_f]Vera[/name_f] - Fits really well with your other favorites, and I adore it. Has anyone suggested [name_f]Vera[/name_f] [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f]?
[name_f]Enid[/name_f] - Definitely a lot frumpier than your other names, if that’s a concern. I personally have never cared for it, but a really bold kid could carry it off.

Boys: (" ")
[name_m]Edwin[/name_m] - Eh. Nice, but a little lacking in a vague way. I do like all the “[name_m]Ed[/name_m]” nicknames.
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] it. It’s long and formal, but the nicknames make it totally accessible/wearable.
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] - Also love this one–it’s on my list as well. It’s right in the sweet spot and so likeable!
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] - Cute. Goes with pretty much all of your other names–I could totally see siblings [name_f]Enid[/name_f] and [name_m]Walter[/name_m].
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m] - [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] I’m just lukewarm about, but I would definitely be impressed if I met a little [name_m]Desmond[/name_m].

Thank-you for your comments @geeknamezyo ! I love [name_f]Vera[/name_f] [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f], it’s definitely one of my favourite combinations. I had never really thought about [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] being ultra-girly…it’s always interesting to hear other people’s perceptions of your favourites. Same goes for [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]. It’s starting to lose its luster for me after so many - as you put it, lukewarm - reviews.

I still can’t make up my mind about [name_f]Enid[/name_f]. I love the meaning and the history, and that it is so underused. But I can’t decide if I actually like the sound if it.
