Now I’m curious to see those favorite “guilty pleasure” names. You know what I mean: you really love them, yet they are just a little too out there to be wearable…get too much hate…the people in your region would slaughter the pronunciation…they sound too foreign…they are only usable as middle names…etc.!
So come on, let’s see what’s on your list! (I don’t actually expect everyone to have 10)
A few of mine are:
[name]Wolfgang[/name] - (had a dog named this, we called him Wolfie, so it feels like I can’t use it on a person)
[name]Ariel[/name] for a boy
[name]Apollo[/name] and [name]Artemis[/name] as twins
[name]Lilo[/name]
[name]Nemo[/name]
[name]Harry[/name] (sounds too much like Hairy for me)
[name]Penelope[/name] nn [name]Penny[/name] (had a dog by this name)
[name]Juniper[/name] (have a cat by this name)
[name]Beatrix[/name] (partner’s name starts with a P…too [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Potter[/name] for me!!)
[name]Beatrice[/name] (same reason as above…which is too bad, I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name], if it weren’t for the “P” surname, I’d go for it!)
[name]Zinnia[/name] (a little too “out there” for my partner)
[name]Clara[/name] (my name is [name]Claire[/name])
[name]Ashley[/name]…for a boy (obviously a no-go, but I like it in theory)
[name]Dorian[/name]/[name]Finian[/name]
I’d never heard of this concept until I discovered tis site a couple of days ago, but there are definitely names I love which I can’t use for one reason or another (though not worried about being to bizarre). Really feeling for last person, as I love [name]Beatrix[/name] too!
So mine:
Nomie/[name]Noemi[/name] and [name]Thecla[/name] - religious
[name]Jennifer[/name] - too normal!
[name]Tallulah[/name] - too common
[name]Hermione[/name] - curse [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]
[name]Polly[/name] - cat
[name]Catherine[/name]/[name]Clare[/name] - others in family
[name]Iphigenia[/name] - means ‘sacrifice’
[name]Felix[/name] & [name]Orlando[/name] - cats
[name]Reuben[/name], [name]Jacob[/name] & [name]Zebedee[/name] - religious
[name]Harry[/name] - too common
[name]Hezekiah[/name] - [name]Hezekiah[/name] is a bit unwieldy for a toddler.
[name]Apollo[/name] - A bit much to live up to.
[name]Artemis[/name] (girl) - I wanted twins named [name]Apollo[/name] and [name]Artemis[/name] at one time. It feels a bit too heavy with my other girls names.
[name]Guinevere[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] the name, dislike the connection to the literary adulteress
[name]Wolf[/name] - I think it’s fine, esp. as a mn, but people turn their noses up at it and say it’s too aggressive.
[name]Amadeus[/name] - Again, a bit unwieldy.
[name]Beauregard[/name] - [name]Love[/name] [name]Beau[/name] and may well use it. But the longer form is a bit too… too.
[name]Hamish[/name] - I don’t see a problem with it, but I live in the States, and people would probably butcher it/not know what to make of it.
[name]Jupiter[/name] - I think it’s cute, but the “hey, where’s [name]Mars[/name] and [name]Venus[/name]” jokes would get old.
[name]Huckleberry[/name] - I love the nn [name]Huck[/name], but English Lit would be a nightmare for my guy.
@hayley88 – I’m using [name]Persephone[/name] because there’s tons more about her than just a grim meaning (which words experts say might not even be accurate since her name has -phone at the end, which usually means something to do with sound – ex homophone)
I don’t know if I have 10 or not but here’s some of mine:

[name]River[/name]
[name]Phoenix[/name]
[name]Darwin[/name]
[name]Juniper[/name] and [name]Piper[/name]-i like them but again can’t see them on adults
@dantea the meaning never used to bother me,I know a bit about Greek mythology, but my OH has really laboured the point. I do think it’s a beautiful name in all honesty.
He made me strike it off the “what if list” and has now had to concede on [name]Hermione[/name].
I easily have a top ten for each gender (in fact, I’m going to cheat and do top 12s). I’m extraordinarily picky so many names I like end up as ‘guilty pleasures’! The names on these lists are ruled out for breaking one of my ‘naming rules’: no major pronunciation problems, nothing nicknamey, nothing unisex, nothing with major teasing potential, nothing heavily associated with a different ethnic heritage and nothing that seems ‘made-up’.
