Top Twenty Girls' Names: Opinions?

I just adore names. I love the history and meaning behind them, the sound. Girl names are harder for me to narrow down than boy’s names; I appreciate strong and unique names, particularly those with historical or mythological meaning. Comments and suggestions? Which are your favorites and least favorites?

[name]Harlow[/name]
[name]Isla[/name] (this one’s getting so popular though, so I might throw it out)
[name]Bronte[/name]
[name]Lilou[/name] (short for [name]Liliane[/name])
[name]Holiday[/name]/[name]Holliday[/name]
[name]Harper[/name]
[name]Isolde[/name]
[name]Valentina[/name]
Virginia

My favorites are [name]Aislinn[/name] and [name]Valentina[/name]

I love [name]Lilou[/name], and at one point had it on my list for my daughter. We ended up naming her [name]Lily[/name] [name]Hope[/name], though. I received overwhelmingly negative responses from people when I mentioned [name]Lilou[/name]! I also like [name]Holiday[/name] (nn [name]Holly[/name]), [name]Aurelia[/name] & [name]Harper[/name]. Good luck!

Favorites:
[name]Vivien[/name]
[name]Lorelei[/name]
[name]Cora[/name]
[name]Harlow[/name]
[name]Holiday[/name] (Breakfast at [name]Tiffany[/name]'s is one of my absolute favorites, so I’ve tossed around the idea of [name]Holiday[/name] as a MN. So glad to see it on someone else’s list!)

[name]Amelie[/name] - a pretty French gem

[name]Vivien[/name] - I go back and forth on this name. I like the [name]Vivian[/name] spelling the best but it’s a fine name from Welsh mythology.

[name]Aurelia[/name] - I’m not usually a fan of frilly and feminine names but [name]Aurelia[/name] is one of the few exceptions. A classic [name]Roman[/name] beauty!

[name]Lenore[/name] - I knew a neurotic woman with this name so it’s tainted for me. I prefer [name]Leonora[/name].

[name]Ariadne[/name] - An unusual Greek mythological name that may cause spelling and pronunciation headaches.

[name]Lorelei[/name] - I knew a smart and sassy woman named [name]Lorelei[/name] so that’s the image this name gives me.

[name]Aislinn[/name] - Not my favourite Irish name. Again, spelling and pronunciation issues.

[name]Cora[/name] - I know an Italian [name]Cora[/name] (full name is Corradina). [name]Nora[/name] and [name]Cora[/name] are both pretty but getting popular.

[name]Brenna[/name] - OK but nothing exciting. I would stay away from most “BR” names due to their trendiness ([name]Brielle[/name], [name]Brianna[/name], [name]Briley[/name], Brailey, [name]Brighton[/name], [name]Brinley[/name] etc…). These types of names all sound the same after awhile.

[name]Blair[/name] - Blah

[name]January[/name] - This month has a happy feel to it but it may still be too strongly associated to Mad Men’s [name]January[/name] [name]Jones[/name].

[name]Harlow[/name] - A celebrity child name plus a Hollywood glamour name ([name]Jean[/name] [name]Harlow[/name]). Too bad with just one letter change, it would be harlot.

[name]Isla[/name] - The love I had for this name has diminished somewhat.

[name]Bronte[/name] - While I appreciate the literary connection, this name sounds harsh and brutal for a girl (like [name]Bronson[/name]). Perhaps it would be better in the middle spot.

[name]Lilou[/name] (short for [name]Liliane[/name]) - Too cutesy for a full name but ok for [name]Liliane[/name]'s nn

[name]Holiday[/name]/[name]Holliday[/name] - A guilty pleasure name for me. Best in the middle.

[name]Harper[/name] - Harsh, unattractive and one of the trendiest names around. Avoid it like the plague!

[name]Isolde[/name] - The Welsh connection is great but even though it’s pronounced differently, I really struggle with the way it looks (I sold).

[name]Valentina[/name] - I prefer [name]Valentine[/name] because I’m not a fan of “tina” names.

[name]Bronte[/name] is my favorite on your list. [name]Jane[/name] Eyre fan here. I would use [name]Bronte[/name] if it went well with my last name, but it does not.

I love your list  Especially:
[name]Lenore[/name]
[name]Ariadne[/name]
[name]Lorelei[/name]
[name]Bronte[/name]
[name]Lilou[/name]
[name]Harper[/name]
[name]Isolde[/name]

Least favourite would be :
[name]January[/name]
Blaair
[name]Harlow[/name]
[name]Brenna[/name]

[name]Amelie[/name]: Really nice, this is on my list as well, and is about the girliest on my list.
[name]Vivien[/name] - Cute
[name]Aurelia[/name] - OK, an interesting take on something that sounds like [name]Aurora[/name].
[name]Lenore[/name] - [name]Love[/name] this, wish I could use it, but it doesn’t work in my other language
[name]Ariadne[/name] - Nice
[name]Lorelei[/name] - ALL I can think of is [name]Gilmore[/name] Girls…
[name]Cora[/name] - Really nice
[name]Brenna[/name] - Not my style - in Icelandic it means fire, though, which I think is kind of cool
[name]Blair[/name] - Not my style
[name]Aislinn[/name] - Nice!
[name]January[/name] - Not my style at all
[name]Harlow[/name] - I don’t know, have never thought about this name before.
[name]Isla[/name] (this one’s getting so popular though, so I might throw it out) - It is cute though
[name]Bronte[/name] - Cool, more of a mn potential for me, love the literary associations
[name]Lilou[/name] (short for [name]Liliane[/name]) - I like [name]Lilou[/name], it has the same exotic French cuteness as names like [name]Esme[/name], Amélie, [name]Manon[/name]
[name]Holiday[/name]/[name]Holliday[/name] - [name]Don[/name]'t like this at all. I think it pops out as strange in your list of very nice names
[name]Harper[/name] - OK, NMS, but I realize its potential
[name]Isolde[/name] - [name]Love[/name] it, would never be brave enough to use it myself
[name]Valentina[/name] - [name]Just[/name] ok, too long and girly and Italian for me
[name]Virginia[/name] - Same as above, less Italian though

Some suggestions (I have especially included names of a literary/mythological nature):
[name]Freya[/name]
[name]Serena[/name]
[name]Leda[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Rosalind[/name]
[name]Thisbe[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Viola[/name]

[name]Amelie[/name] - Cute but I have trouble saying it. Is it Uh-meel-lee?
[name]Vivien[/name] - [name]Love[/name]! [name]Just[/name] prefer the [name]Vivienne[/name] spelling more.
[name]Aurelia[/name] - Eh, learned the name when I learned Latin. Like the meaning, not so much the sound.
[name]Lenore[/name] - Cute! I’ve been looking for more nor names (My favorite is [name]Honora[/name])
[name]Ariadne[/name] - Yes! Learned this for [name]Roman[/name] mythology, it’s one of my favorite mythological names
[name]Lorelei[/name] - Nope, don’t like the sound or spelling.
[name]Cora[/name] - A thousand times yes!!
[name]Brenna[/name] - NMS
[name]Blair[/name] - It’s growing on me because of Gossip Girl
[name]Aislinn[/name] - NMS
[name]January[/name] - I wouldn’t use it but it’s solid and easy to remember
[name]Harlow[/name] - NMS
[name]Isla[/name] - NMS, not enough substance for my taste
[name]Bronte[/name] - NMS
[name]Lilou[/name] (short for [name]Liliane[/name]) - Only like [name]Liliane[/name]
[name]Holiday[/name]/[name]Holliday[/name] - Only as a middle name
[name]Harper[/name] - Heard it all the time when Wizards of [name]Waverly[/name] Place was on, but it never grew on me
[name]Isolde[/name] - NMS
[name]Valentina[/name] - [name]One[/name] of my favorites!
[name]Virginia[/name] - It has a sweet, thick sound to it, but it also reminds me of ham

My favorites are [name]Virginia[/name] and [name]Valentina[/name]. I also love [name]Ginny[/name] as a nn for [name]Virginia[/name], but [name]Virgie[/name] could work too. I also like [name]Vivien[/name] and [name]Aurelia[/name].
