Hello Nameberries!
I am looking for opinions on name spelling,
“Rory” is my next pick for a child… I’ve heard the traditional spelling of this name can be “Ruairidh” but to be honest I live in Canada and that spelling is not common…
I am wondering is it best to go the traditional route or modern route for names? Or what route would take for the name Rory on a girl?
I have Lachlan also chosen and like the traditional spelling…
My other kids names are also more unique!
[name_u]Rory[/name_u] is a traditional spelling of the name—just an anglicized one. If it’s what you prefer, definitely go with [name_u]Rory[/name_u]. It’ll be much easier for people outside of [name_u]Ireland[/name_u] to understand. I think [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is super cute!

Thank you for that insight! I really appreciate it
Thank you! I am really torn because I love the culture and history behind traditional spelling, but also don’t want to make a child’s life difficult having to explain or spell their name every time haha.
I love Rory!! It can be short for [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f], or even [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]! And of course, [name_u]Rory[/name_u] on it’s own is just precious. I think the spelling [name_u]Rory[/name_u] will be the best since it’s much easier to read and understand!
[name_u]Rory[/name_u] is the well-established anglicised form, so it’s legit imo.

Definitely [name_u]Rory[/name_u]. It’s very much useable. It’s the same for a lot of these Gaelic names.
i’m scottish, and to me rory and ruairidh are pronounced differently
rory is ro-ree
ruairidh is roo-ree
i love rory for a girl, and i would stick with that spelling

Thank you everyone, I feel like I have some good information on the name now! I really appreciate the feedback as always.
I agree with @hannahhh. I have always heard Rory and Ruairidh pronounced differently. Ruairidh is pronounced with more of a “Rue” sound. So it’s not just a different spelling. It’s a different name with a different pronunciation, similar to “Susan” and “Suzanne”.

I think [name_u]Rory[/name_u] would be easier later for him or her, because it’s gets annoying when people are always mispronouncing your name. [name_f]My[/name_f] first name is [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], and though it didn’t happen often, the few times when substitute teachers would say Uh-‘Millie’-Uh, it would bother me. But honestly, I don’t think the name [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is that common anyway, so don’t worry about going with the classic spelling and thinking its not a unique enough. [name_m]Just[/name_m] go with what you like!
