I’ve posted probably twice before on here a year or so ago about thinking about changing my name. I haven’t done it yet, and I’m soooo indecisive. I’m a nonbinary trans person with a super femme name and unworkable last name. I do like my first name, but it does get me misgendered a lot and I’m trying to find a workaround. For the sake of discussion, my current name is [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] Heir (not actual LN spelling) and my middle name is the most common middle name you can think of that starts with M.
I need as many ideas as you all can come up with because I’m really stuck! Here’s what I’ve got so far:
Neutral-izations of [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]/[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] -
[name_m]Fio[/name_m] (Fiyo / Fayo? pronounced FIE oh)
- the problem with this is that several of my friends are friends with someone named Fayo
[name_m]Soren[/name_m]
Sony
[name_f]Sappho[/name_f] (I know this is a femme name but it’s pretty offbeat and I like it)
Family names turned first names:
Vaessen (pronounced VAH sen)
[name_m]Marius[/name_m] (I don’t like this a ton but other people said I look like a [name_m]Marius[/name_m])
Other names:
[name_u]Cato[/name_u]
[name_f]Tempe[/name_f]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Malachi[/name_m] (Too many syllables for my taste, but it’s cool)
I really like names that start with consonants and that don’t end in -a or -ie.
Also if you have any middle name suggestions for what I’ve listed, please list as many as you can think of! Masculine, feminine, or neutral MNs welcome.
I’m not a huge fan of any of the names you listed, which probably isn’t what you want to hear. But it sounds like you might not be super thrilled about them either. I think, out of those, [name_m]Soren[/name_m] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] are my top choices.
Here are some of my favorite gender neutral names:
I know how hard it can be choosing a name! I haven’t done it for myself, but I’m pregnant with my second child and naming a human being is so difficult! Finding the name that fits who you are on the inside is a big decision. I wish you ALL the luck in finding the one that is right for you.
Good:
Soren - love this one. I think it has somewhat the same ‘sweet and chill’ vibe that Sophie has.
Vaeseen - I really like this actually. It’s unique, doesn’t scream one gender or the other, and I don’t think the pronunciation will be that difficult.
Felix
Not so good:
Sappho - this will sound terrible, but it sounds like a desease to me
Sony - this spelling is too, well, Sony the Company. Sonny or Sunny would be splendid.
Fio - first instinct would be to pronounce it fee-oh, which maybe it’s the multilingual in me, but fio and ‘fayo’ are words to me that just don’t make good names (fio = wire, ‘fayo’ = feio = ugly), so I suppose you could take this with a grain of salt.
Just not feeling it:
Cato
Tempe
Marius
Malachi
Suggestions:
Seren - a step from Soren, but gender neutral, and has a nice meaning.
Soleil - with Sony / spellings for a nickname
Sol - also meaning ‘sun’
Effie - from Sophie. I’ve seen both girls and a a adorable baby boy named this, and it can work quite well
Sapphire - Sappho comes from Sapphire, as far as nameberry tells me here. Sapphire is also unisex, and after meeting a little boy named this again I say it can work.
Kai / Kye / Kiah / Kaia
Micah / Myka
Kit
Rio
Maren
Temperance
Faye
Ffion
Wren / Ren
[name_m]Soren[/name_m] is my favourite choice out of the ones you’ve listed. [name_m]Soren[/name_m] [name_m]Marius[/name_m] would be nice
[name_m]Malachi[/name_m] or even just [name_u]Kai[/name_u] would be nice too and I like [name_m]Felix[/name_m] too - it has the fee sound so a kind of nod to [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]?
You might like [name_u]Theo[/name_u] or [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] too
I also immediately liked [name_m]Soren[/name_m] because there was a [name_m]Soren[/name_m] on [name_f]Star[/name_f] Trek TNG who was trans, too But since it’s technically male only I’d pair it with a more feminine leaning middle name, like [name_u]Riley[/name_u].
I’d advise against [name_f]Sappho[/name_f], btw, because it’s being used as another word for lesbian, and as a faab nb you’re probably at risk for being mistaken for a butch lesbian…? No idea what you look like, of course, I might be totally wrong
