Transgender Male (FTM) Searching For Male Names! Pls provide opinions& suggestions!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! As far as I can tell, Nameberry is a pretty accepting place so I feel comfortable sharing that I am a transgender male, meaning I was born with female physical characteristics but identify as a male and I have dysphoria.

Anyway. I want to begin my social transition soon since I won’t be able to start my medical one until I gather up the money and after I’m done with school.

I want to have a name at least in mind before I start coming out, however.

I am between 14 and 17 years old if that helps.

My current list of names consists of:

[name_u]Finch[/name_u]
[name_u]Sage[/name_u]
[name_u]Wren[/name_u]
[name_m]Luka[/name_m]
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u]
[name_m]Nathanael[/name_m] ([name_m]Nathan[/name_m])
[name_m]Adam[/name_m]
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]
[name_m]Erik[/name_m]
[name_m]Marc[/name_m]
[name_u]Adrien[/name_u]
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyril[/name_m]
[name_m]Jethro[/name_m]
[name_m]Luke[/name_m]

Right now, my favourites are [name_u]Finch[/name_u], [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_m]Luka[/name_m], [name_u]Flynn[/name_u], [name_m]Nathanael[/name_m], [name_m]Erik[/name_m], [name_u]Adrien[/name_u]

I prefer names with English (Euro or English, doesn’t matter), [name_m]French[/name_m], scottish, or irish origins but almost anything else

Thanks Nameberry users :)))

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], you have a great list
My top picks are [name_m]Luka[/name_m] and [name_m]Adam[/name_m].
Maybe invision introducing yourself or responding to a name. Might help you whittle the ones that don’t feel right.

All the best!

[name_f]Welcome[/name_f]!

I like a lot of your names - especially the nature-inspired ones like [name_u]Finch[/name_u], [name_u]Sage[/name_u], and [name_u]Wren[/name_u]. I think one consideration might be whether you want a somewhat gender-neutral name or a more clearly masculine name. Most nature names (including all three I mentioned above) are used by both/all genders. Where I live I know both little boys and girls named [name_u]Sage[/name_u], and [name_u]Wren[/name_u] is more often given to girls in the US. I named my son [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] but have met several little girls named [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] since he was born. Personally I like unusual nature names and consider their gender-neutral quality a positive thing, but I’m not sure how you feel about that. There’s also a chance that in the future a name that is currently somewhat gender neutral “tips” in one direction (like what is happening with [name_u]Wren[/name_u] right now - as it gets more common, more girls are named [name_u]Wren[/name_u], which can spark a long-term trend).

[name_m]Luka[/name_m] and [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] also feel a little gender neutral, but otherwise the rest of the names on your list are pretty masculine.

I personally love [name_u]Wren[/name_u] the best. I also like the spelling [name_u]Ren[/name_u] or you could look for a longer name and use [name_u]Wren[/name_u]/[name_u]Ren[/name_u] as a nickname.

Good luck with coming out!! Congrats on making the decision.

[name_f]Welcome[/name_f]! I’ll go through and give my thoughts on your name options and then pick my favorites.

[name_u]Finch[/name_u]- this is a really cool and funky name but it does strike me as an “I changed my name to this” sort of thing, if that makes sense? It’s undeniably cool though and I don’t think that should ruin the name for you
[name_u]Sage[/name_u]- I love [name_u]Sage[/name_u] for boys and girls but I’ve known more girls with the name than boys. If you want something that is nearly 100% (because with boy names on girls being a trend, it’s never completely 100%) masculine, I don’t think this is the one for you but I still like it a lot
[name_u]Wren[/name_u]- same thing as with [name_u]Sage[/name_u]. I actually prefer [name_u]Wren[/name_u] for boys but it’s definitely more popular for girls
[name_m]Luka[/name_m]- I love [name_u]Luca[/name_u]. I’m a big fan of softer names for boys so I think this is a great choice!
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u]- another one of my favorites haha, we have similar styles! I love the [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] [name_m]Rider[/name_m] connection, I think he’d be an excellent namesake
[name_m]Nathanael[/name_m] ([name_m]Nathan[/name_m])- I prefer just [name_m]Nathan[/name_m] over [name_m]Nathanael[/name_m]. The nickname [name_m]Nate[/name_m] is pretty cool
[name_m]Adam[/name_m]- definitely masculine but much more common and blends in more than the other names on your list. It depends on what style you’re looking for
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]- I have yet to meet a [name_m]Gabe[/name_m]/[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] who wasn’t a complete f-boy so I’m not a fan of this name. However, don’t let my associations stop you from using it
[name_m]Erik[/name_m]- another undeniably masculine but more common name. I like this a smidge more than [name_m]Adam[/name_m] if you decide to go with this style
[name_m]Marc[/name_m]- same as with [name_m]Erik[/name_m] and [name_m]Adam[/name_m]. I still prefer [name_m]Erik[/name_m] but I like this over [name_m]Adam[/name_m]
[name_u]Adrien[/name_u]- I love [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] but soundalike girl name [name_f]Adrienne[/name_f] exists so it might lead to the same issues as [name_u]Wren[/name_u] and [name_u]Sage[/name_u]
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]- this just really isn’t my style but there’s nothing wrong with it
[name_m]Cyril[/name_m]- I think the nickname [name_m]Cy[/name_m] is just super cool so I really like this for you
[name_m]Jethro[/name_m]- unfortunately, I just hear “death row” when I hear this name so I’m really not a fan
[name_m]Luke[/name_m]- this is fine but I much prefer [name_m]Luka[/name_m]. I feel like everyone in my area has a son named [name_m]Luke[/name_m] so I’m over it

My favorites for you are [name_m]Luka[/name_m], [name_u]Flynn[/name_u], [name_u]Finch[/name_u], and [name_m]Cyril[/name_m] if you want to be a bit more unique, and [name_m]Erik[/name_m], [name_m]Marc[/name_m], and [name_u]Adrien[/name_u] if you want something that fits in more. I agree with the PP who suggested trying on some of your favorites and seeing how they work. The Starbucks Test is a great idea (use the name you’re considering while ordering at Starbucks and see how you feel when you give the name and when they call it out). Best of luck with your transition!

[name_m]Tobias[/name_m] and [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] are my favorites! I also like [name_u]Finch[/name_u] and [name_m]Luka[/name_m], but with the [name_u]Luca[/name_u] spelling.
[name_u]Sage[/name_u] and [name_u]Wren[/name_u] might be too unisex.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Luka[/name_m], [name_u]Flynn[/name_u], [name_u]Adrien[/name_u] and [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] for you!
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u] is probably my fave

A name that came to mind is [name_m]Callum[/name_m] -it means dove so it links to a several of the nature names on your list while also being a little more traditional like [name_m]Adrian[/name_m] or [name_m]Tobias[/name_m].

MY oldest is FTM. Choosing his own name was a big step that really helped him.
I have to say you have a list of really good names, but I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Wren[/name_u], but as others have said, you need to decide if the name sounding gender neutral is a problem for you. My child didn’t care too much, because they feel that names shouldn’t have a gender, but that’s not the same for everyone.

[name_m]How[/name_m] exciting! I helped two close friends (one was FTM, the other MTF) with choosing their new names recently, and it has been an incredible experience. I’m going to give feedback on each of these.

[name_u]Finch[/name_u]: What comes to mind immediately is [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] [name_u]Finch[/name_u], from To Kill A Mockingbird. If that’s what you’re going for, I’d suggest reading the sequel (Go [name_m]Set[/name_m] a Watchman), because he’s not a great guy. It also makes me think of the early 2000’s emo band of the same name.

[name_u]Sage[/name_u]/[name_u]Wren[/name_u]: Both of these feel like [name_u]Gale[/name_u] to me…it’s a unisex name, but I feel like they’re more common as a girls’ name.

[name_m]Luka[/name_m]: I hate this name for anyone, and I don’t understand why it’s so trendy right now.

[name_u]Flynn[/name_u]: [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] is a good name. I’d say it out loud with your last name several times in a row to see how it feels. One syllable names are hard.

[name_m]Nathanael[/name_m] ([name_m]Nathan[/name_m]): This is one of my favorite names, but I’d go with the traditional spelling of [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m].

[name_m]Adam[/name_m]/[name_m]Erik[/name_m]/[name_m]Marc[/name_m]: These are all classics. There’d be no problems pronouncing them.

[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]/[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]: Same feedback as above. Plus you can use [name_m]Gabe[/name_m]/[name_u]Toby[/name_u] as nicknames which I love.

[name_u]Adrien[/name_u]: -ien/-ian names are so trendy, I’d avoid them.

[name_m]Cyril[/name_m]: I do not love his name, but I also think it would depend on your last name.

[name_m]Jethro[/name_m]: Seems old-timey, but there are cool nicknames like [name_u]Jet[/name_u]/[name_m]Jed[/name_m].

[name_m]Luke[/name_m]: I much prefer this to [name_m]Luka[/name_m].

Something I did with my friends was look at the Social Security reports for the years they were born. Their concerns involved passing for safety reasons (especially my MTF friend), and she felt that having a more believable name would help. [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], [name_m]Nathan[/name_m] and [name_m]Luke[/name_m] were in the top 50 for the age range you gave, so I’d go for one of those.

Good luck!
