Trend or coincidence?

13 out of the 17 kids in my daughter’s pre school class had names starting with the "jeh’ or ‘keh’ sound: i thought this was interesting and was wondering if it is this part of a trend or just coincidence? what do you think?

jackson, jackson, jack, juliana, gemma, jake

karl, carter (g), colin, caleb, katie, kevin, kyle

we are in a NJ suburb of NYC

I think the problem is the name [name]Jack[/name] and it’s variants. Between [name]Jake[/name], [name]Jack[/name] and [name]Jackson[/name] you’ve already covered almost 24% of the class. That’s every 4.25 kids. Wowzer.

It might be a local trend - it’s definitely not national. Take a look at the top 10 names listed by SSA last year they listed [name]Jacob[/name], [name]Jayden[/name], and [name]Chloe[/name] that fit your ‘trend’. But it is definitely an interesting observation and I’m grateful I’m not their teacher - I’d constantly be misspeaking.

I would say it’s part of a larger trend. In my area, [name]Jack[/name]/[name]Jackson[/name]/[name]Jaxon[/name] is huge too. I see the name all the time in the birth announcements. (My state is very tryndee too- lots of Mckenzees and Kennadees. Or maybe they grate my nerves the most and I pick them out more :))

It’s a trend. Not a fan.

Definitely a trend. If there were more names starting with a Z sound, i bet you’d see way more Z and X names. its part of being unique, you know - having a name with the highest possible Scrabble score

I think the J thing is always around, especially for boys, just what names they are change.

My parents’ generation: [name]Joseph[/name], [name]Joel[/name], [name]John[/name] (NN [name]Jack[/name]), and girls [name]Jodie[/name] and [name]Joanne[/name]/[name]Joanna[/name]
My generation: [name]Jason[/name], [name]Jared[/name], [name]Jennifer[/name], [name]Jessica[/name]
Now: [name]Jackson[/name]/[name]Jaxon[/name], [name]Jayden[/name], [name]Jack[/name]

Pretty much always: [name]James[/name], [name]Jake[/name]

I have seen that a lot locally, especially with the ages of my older 3 kids. We were at a street fair and there was a sign up introducing the martial arts proforming group coming with the first names of children listed. I did lot of J, K,and C names. I remember seeing both a [name]Kaleb[/name] and a [name]Caleb[/name]. There was a [name]Jordan[/name] and a [name]Jordynn[/name] and [name]Jacey[/name],[name]Jaden[/name], [name]Jason[/name] and other ones similar… obviously did not write down the list since we paused for just a little bit. But yes, I did notice this trend and all the chiodren were 5 to 12.
