Recently, I was trying to pick a name for my little girl and I told my family “no inanimate objects–like Fountain”…So my dad chimes in with “[name]How[/name] about Trevi? You love that place…”
Research does not allow that it was named for a person–making it harder for me to not think that it is “weird”.
When I saw your post, my first thought was Trevi was short for the male name [name]Trevor[/name]. The Trevi Fountain is a beautiful place in [name]Rome[/name] but I don’t know if it’s a good name for a girl. Since it seems special to you, perhaps you could use it as a quirky middle name. There are two obscure female saint names Tryphena and Tryphosa that may work with Trevi as a nickname but I guess they would be defined as “weird” as well. There is also a girls name [name]Treva[/name], [name]Trevina[/name], the Hindu name Triveni or the more unisex Welsh name Trevelyan.
Trevi is nice, but I think of Travie/[name]Travis[/name] so I see it on a boy. And also Trevi can be teased into Tranny, which may or may not be an issue for you.
Trevi…isn’t that in [name]Italy[/name]? Perhaps an Italian name from that area, or tied to the particular region.
I feel like it is just too far-fetching. My DH and I thought about it all night and do not wish her life to be harder than it HAS to be already. I think that I was thinking “if I type it out–it might work”…
We have a first cousin named [name]Trevor[/name]–so I think that it would be hard. I also have a tendency NOT to use masculine names…
Well I think it’s really cute, but it sounds like you’ve vetoed it! I love the short, nicknamey-sounding names as official first names. I also like the meaning it has for you. I agree with the above poster’s suggestion of [name]Treva[/name] (I know one, my grandmother’s best friend from childhood, and she pronounces it TREE-vuh).
[name]Trev[/name]/Trevi (and all other cutesy nicknames deriving from [name]Trevor[/name]) is the nickname I gave my little sister years ago and it stuck, although it has nothing to do with her real name. She hates it.
She refuses to respond when I call her [name]Trev[/name]/Trevi in public because she thinks people will assume her real name is [name]Trevor[/name], which makes her think of a middle-aged man.
I think Trevi is a cute name and I like the idea of naming her after a place you love, but not something I’d like to have as my own name. And like my little sister would point out, people will think her real name is [name]Trevor[/name] which is devastating when you’re a 12 year old girl!
If you want something which SOUNDS similar, what about [name]Tavi[/name]? Or using Trevi as a middle name? Or honouring another place you love?
I know this conversation is old, and you have already had and named your little girl, but I just wanted to add my 2 cents for anyone considering the name. I am a 28 yo female and my first name is Trevi (not a nickname). I love it. Growing up, sometimes I thought it was ugly because it was different, but that feeling never lasted very long.
I have had junk mail addressed to me as a “Mr.”, but I usually just find it funny.
I am a 40 year old female named Trevi. My parents combined [name]Tre[/name] from my dad’s name [name]Tremaine[/name] and vi from his middle name [name]Vincent[/name]. I am always surprised at how many compliments I get on my name. I’d definitely recommend it for anyone looking for an exotic name outside the norm.
