My husband and I recently found out I got pregnant on our honeymoon! I’ve barely had time to fully adjust to my new last name and am now trying to find baby names that go well with it
The name is Spearman (pretty manly huh)
…which might make some pretty killer boy names or might make some boy names that sound like killers! I need help finding a manly name that doesn’t sound too violent. We also need some pretty feminine girls names to pull of this tricky last name. Please help!
My Husband LOVES [name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f] as a first and middle but it is a tad plain for me
I love [name_f]Onna[/name_f] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] ( to honor my mom [name_f]Donna[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]) or some further variation Onnalee, Onnali, Onnaly
and a I think a boys name that started with S would be catchy like [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] Spearman, or something less trendy. I also like [name_u]Orion[/name_u] as both I and the name are Greek and some softer names like [name_m]Nahum[/name_m] which means ‘comforter’ in Hebrew
I think [name_f]Annalee[/name_f] or [name_f]Annaliese[/name_f] (because then your husband gets the ‘[name_f]Elise[/name_f]’ part) would be gorgeous with Spearman: [name_f]Annaliese[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] Spearman.
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] Onnalee Spearman
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] Onnalee Spearman
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f] Spearman
[name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f] (for your mother) [name_f]Claire[/name_f] Spearman
Our last name is [name_m]Spaulding[/name_m]. My personal baby naming rules will be that no name can end with an “S”, “C”, or an “X”. With a last name that starts with an “S”, those letters just sound too sssnakey. For example, [name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f] Spearman. Where does the “S” at the end of [name_f]Elise[/name_f] end and the “S” of Spearman begin? [name_f]Annalise[/name_f] Spearman sounds like the name never ends- like no separation of first and last names. Too much “Sssss.” Or like for us to name a kid “[name_u]Alex[/name_u] [name_m]Spaulding[/name_m]”…I could just hear it for life: “Did you say [name_m]Alec[/name_m] or [name_u]Alex[/name_u]?” (Which is the same reason for “no C’s.”) So, when I name my kids I’m avoiding the never-ending “ssssss” sound. Lol. I think Spearman is a nice last name! [name_m]Just[/name_m] pair it with something that is pleasant sounding to you.
Thanks for the help! Those are some great ideas. I like the sound of [name_m]Solomon[/name_m] Spearman just can’t shake the association with the 700 wives
Andrealyn- well put! I completely agree with those rules!
Some other names we like are
Ellawyn or Elawyn or Ellowyn
Urmila
[name_f]Havilah[/name_f]
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_m]Nahum[/name_m]
[name_m]Johanan[/name_m] (but I can’t rationalize using the J sound that I like better)
[name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f] is perfectly di vine! I think it is soooo sweet when a father actually has an opinion on their little girl’s name. I do understand wanting to honor your mother as well. I love the suggestion of [name_f]Annelise[/name_f] as well.
With a 2-syllable last name beginning with an consonant, I’d suggest a few things.
First, I’d go with a 1-syllable or 3-syllable first or middle name combination to have a 1-3-2 syllable count or 3-2-1 syllable count. It seems best and doesn’t sound to monotone like a 2-2-2 syllable count.
Second, I’d avoid a middle name that starts with a vowel so that your child’s initials don’t spell anything like [name_u]LES[/name_u], SOS or SIS (especially since you said you may want a first name that starts with S), and the like. I’d also avoid first names that end with S as well.
Third, word or nature names would be challenging. [name_f]Lark[/name_f] Spearman, [name_f]Snow[/name_f] Spearman, or [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] Spearman sounds more like a thing than a person.
Here are a few lists that may get you started:
Best Cool Unusual Girls Names (not as plain as [name_f]Claire[/name_f])
Yupster [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names For Boys (something less trend resistant than [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u])
I love [name_f]Claire[/name_f] as a first name as it is so sweat. What about [name_f]Clarabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Donna[/name_f]? I am not a big fan of [name_f]Onna[/name_f] as I think it will be mistaken for [name_f]Anna[/name_f] a lot. There are many variations of [name_f]Donna[/name_f] that are a possibility like [name_f]Donita[/name_f], Donnella, or [name_f]Madonna[/name_f]. I do like [name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_f]Madonna[/name_f] Spearman.
I think boys names with a soft sounds tone down the he-man sound of the last name. S, J, Ch, F, L and Th names would work well.
I love the name [name_f]Lola[/name_f]. As @giinkies said, using something with the same meaning is an indirect nod to your mother. [name_m]How[/name_m] you like [name_f]Lola[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]?
