My husband and I are in a bit of a fix! Our last name is double barreled, Jewish and English, “Greenberg [name]Jones[/name]” (for example’s sake) but our name choices area mixed too! I have Spanish heritage and like Spanish names as well as Jewish names. My husband is British and likes traditional UK names. I fear that a lot of our name choices just sound horrible with our surname. Help! We have a list but … do any of these sound so bad that they should just be struck from the list? (I don’t know how to make the names show up as hyperlinks, sorry!) [name]Do[/name] ANY of these fit the bill for Jewish/British/Spanish with our big ole’ last name?!
GIRLS
[name]Philippa[/name] - [name]Pippa[/name]
[name]Noa[/name]
[name]Eugenia[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name] - [name]Lottie[/name]/[name]Charlie[/name]
[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name] - [name]Nellie[/name]

[name]Zara[/name]
[name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Noemi[/name]
[name]Florencia[/name]
[name]Marta[/name] or [name]Martina[/name]
[name]Georgina[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name] - Beanie

[name]Adlai[/name]
[name]Emmet[/name]
[name]Saar[/name]
[name]Ira[/name]
[name]Jesse[/name]
[name]Reuben[/name]
[name]William[/name] - [name]Wills[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]
[name]Claire[/name]
[name]Loren[/name]
[name]Joseph[/name]
[name]Javier[/name]
[name]Joaquin[/name]
[name]Pablo[/name] [name]Daniel[/name] (not [name]Pablo[/name] alone)
[name]Theodore[/name] - [name]Theo[/name]
[name]Wendell[/name]
I think really any of the names would work, but I would choose a one or two syllable name with the long surname. I also think that choosing an English name for the first spot and a Spanish name for the middle (or vice versa) would satisfy your longing to include your background. Good luck!
Of your girls names, i think the following work fairly well for all the variables involved:
GIRLS
[name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name] - [name]Nellie[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] - [name]Joey[/name]
[name]Zara[/name]
[name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Noemi[/name]
[name]Martina[/name]
BOYS
[name]Adlai[/name]
[name]Ira[/name]
[name]Javier[/name] - but I would spell it [name]Xavier[/name]
[name]Jesse[/name]
[name]Reuben[/name]
[name]William[/name] - [name]Wills[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]
[name]Loren[/name]
[name]Joseph[/name]
In terms of other possibilities, what about
[name]Adela[/name]
[name]Amalia[/name]
[name]Amaya[/name]
[name]Celia[/name]
[name]Dalia[/name]
[name]Eliana[/name]/[name]Iliana[/name]
[name]Iris[/name]
[name]Raquel[/name]
[name]Sarita[/name]
[name]Serena[/name]
[name]Zola[/name]
[name]Aaron[/name]
[name]Elias[/name]/[name]Eli[/name]
[name]Emmanuel[/name]
[name]Emil[/name]
[name]Hector[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name]
[name]Jaime[/name]
[name]Leon[/name]
[name]Marcelo[/name]
[name]Rafael[/name]
[name]Simon[/name]
I like [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Rose[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name] for girls, and [name]Jesse[/name], [name]William[/name], [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Theodore[/name] for boys
My husband is Jewish but spent many years in Latin [name]America[/name]. When we first talked about names, he wanted the same thing-- could be Jewish but could be Spanish too. He suggested [name]Rosa[/name] and [name]Clara[/name]. There’s also [name]Beatriz[/name] and [name]Elsa[/name]. I think [name]Rosa[/name] would be great with your last name though. As for boys… what about [name]Xavier[/name]? I like the suggestions of [name]Hugo[/name], [name]Leon[/name], and [name]Simon[/name].
I am a little biased, but I love [name]Noa[/name] for you! Its short, Hebrew, and is common in Europe (its in the top 100 in Spain). GOOD [name]LUCK[/name]
I love [name]Marta[/name] or [name]Martina[/name] for you!
I’ve bolded the ones I especially like
GIRLS
[name]Philippa[/name] - [name]Pippa[/name] - this might be a mouthful
[name]Noa[/name] - masculine for my tastes, but would work with your last name
[name]Eugenia[/name] - surprisingly, doesn’t sound like it would be as much of a mouthful as [name]Philippa[/name]. I think [name]Philippa[/name] is a mouthful in itself.
[name]Charlotte[/name] - [name]Lottie[/name]/[name]Charlie[/name] - love
[name]Rose[/name] - like the pp suggestion of [name]Rosa[/name]; it may flow better and is English along with Spanish
[name]Lucy[/name] - would flow nicely (two syllables seem to be working the best)
[name]Eleanor[/name] - [name]Nellie[/name] - not bad
[name]Josephine[/name] - [name]Joey[/name] - maybe [name]Josephina[/name] to be mre Spanish? Then of course, it’s a mouthful again.
[name]Catalina[/name] - I would definitely think she’s foreign
[name]Eloise[/name] - is French…though may fit
[name]Zara[/name] - I’ve never liked this, it’s just too out there for me
[name]Miriam[/name] - not bad…[name]Mary[/name] might be even better.
[name]Noemi[/name] - I would keep looking at it going “[name]Naomi[/name]?”
[name]Florencia[/name] - is a mouthful in and of itself
[name]Marta[/name] or [name]Martina[/name] - [name]Marta[/name]. I can see that as being just foreign enough and fitting next to a long syllable name.
[name]Georgina[/name] - eh. I prefer either [name]Georgia[/name] or [name]Georgiana[/name].
[name]Beatrice[/name] - Beanie - this depends a lot on the letters in your last name.
BOYS
[name]Adlai[/name] - I just go …?
[name]Emmet[/name] - [name]Emmett[/name] might prove less troublesome. But it requires a last name with a soft sound at the beginning.
[name]Saar[/name] - [name]Star[/name]?
[name]Ira[/name] - sounds like a car
[name]Jesse[/name] - depends a lot on the sound of your last name
[name]Reuben[/name] - this could work well
[name]William[/name] - [name]Wills[/name] - ditto
[name]Henry[/name] - ditto
[name]Claire[/name] - very feminine name where I’m from
[name]Loren[/name] - [name]Lauren[/name] is very feminine where I’m from
[name]Joseph[/name] - This would also work well, being Jewish and English
[name]Javier[/name] - Would look odd next to a Jewish-English name
[name]Joaquin[/name] - pronounced how?
[name]Pablo[/name] [name]Daniel[/name] (not [name]Pablo[/name] alone) - so is [name]Pablo[/name] [name]Daniel[/name] one name or a first and a middle? In the case of it being one name (a la [name]Mary[/name] [name]Lou[/name]) it would definitely be a mouthful. If a first and a middle, ditto [name]Javier[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name] - [name]Theo[/name] - this could work well
[name]Wendell[/name] - sounds like a penguin
[name]Beatrice[/name] is very latina but also UK -and it means “blessed” (somehow that ties in the Jewish aspect in my brain)
I also really like [name]Zara[/name] or [name]Sara[/name] -Hebrew names but well known throughout the world, including Spanish speaking countries and the UK
Of your boys names, I really like [name]Theodore[/name] nn [name]Theo[/name] and [name]Xavier[/name] (I prefer [name]Xavier[/name] to [name]Javier[/name] as a pp suggested).
Thanks for all the thoughts everyone! To respond a bit:
@lineska I’m glad someone likes [name]Marta[/name]! You really don’t hear it that often, but it was my grandmother’s name and I promised her I’d name a daughter for her – she has passed away which makes it important to me that we use it but I wasn’t sure if it sounded horrible with our mishmash surname. [name]Martina[/name] is our alternative, my husband likes [name]Martina[/name] more than [name]Marta[/name].
@mkenison I love [name]Noa[/name]! My husband thinks people will confuse it for [name]Noah[/name] but I don’t really forsee that being a huge problem. Good to know it’s on the top 100 in Europe, I had no idea!
@jame1881 Oh gosh, thanks for such a thorough reply! FWIW, [name]Eugenia[/name] is a family name and would be pronounced the Spanish way, “Eh-oo-hen-ia” not “you-gee-nee-ah”. As Jews we’d never use [name]Mary[/name] in place of [name]Miriam[/name], that would just be weird!
[name]Noemi[/name] again is pronounced the Spanish way “No-em-ee” as opposed to the english “Nay-o-mee”. [name]Joaquin[/name] is pronounced “wah-keen” and in the western [name]Montana[/name] town where we live (my husband is a cowboy) there are quite a few old men named [name]Loren[/name] and [name]Claire[/name] ambling around. They are considered good old-fashioned cowboy names – so of course my husband loves them.
We would use [name]Javier[/name] instead of [name]Xavier[/name] because it is also a family name, and pronounced ha-vee-air not Zay-v-yer. And the last of the pronunciation issues, [name]Georgina[/name] is a family name and is pronounced “Hay-or-hee-nah” and not “[name]George[/name]-ina”
We were looking into [name]Zara[/name] because we have a friend named [name]Megan[/name] and wanted to name a daughter for her – though we don’t like the name [name]Megan[/name] itself. I looked it up and [name]Megan[/name] means “pearl” and I read somewhere that [name]Zara[/name] meant “pearl” also but on the Nameberry site it lists the meaning as “princess” which I don’t like.
