My DH and I are (admittedly) picky with names – nothing too vintage, nothing too trendy, nothing too plain, nothing too crazy… I know, what’s left? But tonight I heard a boy’s name that we both really liked: [name]Tripp[/name]. We enjoy traveling (subtle nod to that) and we like the laid-back cowboy vibe. Here’s the potential issue: [name]Will[/name] [name]Tripp[/name] ever break free from the [name]Bristol[/name] [name]Palin[/name] association? I’m envisioning the “Oh, like [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Palin[/name]'s grandson?” response every time we introduce him. Am I over-thinking it or being appropriately cautious? I’m not 100% tied to the name, so I’d love some honest input! Thanks, berries!
It reminds me of [name]Sarah[/name]/[name]Bristol[/name] [name]Palin[/name], and also a guy called [name]Tripp[/name] Eisen from a metal band my friends listened to when I was a kid. I don’t like it, it’s kind of just a made up name, and only slightly better than naming him Shove or Push. I think it would be fine as a nickname, though, if you really like it. Especially if he’s your third, or if his given name starts with a T.
I know a few, older and baby age. I don’t associate it with her immediately and as her 15min of fame continue to fade, fewer and fewer people will think of her. But, All of the ones I know, that’s not their actual name. It’s a nn because they are the third in the naming generation. Like “[name]William[/name] [name]Sebastian[/name] [name]Barton[/name] III” (totally made up name btw…lol). I know a few people who are [name]Tripp[/name] and a few who are [name]Trey[/name] for that same reason. [name]Just[/name] something to keep in mind. People who know it from that circumstance may assume that’s the case, and that he shares your husband’s name. [name]Don[/name]'t know how many people have that association with it though, so you may or may not have to explain it frequently.
If you name a kid [name]Tripp[/name] now, people will assume [name]Palin[/name]. Maybe in a few years when she’s not so much in the public memory, it could be usable. But definitely not now.
I wouldn’t say “forever” but defiantly right now the name is. For one it’s uncommon and two [name]Palin[/name] is well known. Years from now it should be usable or whenever [name]Palin[/name] leaves the spotlight.
I guess it depends on where you live and generally what kind of people live around you. I’d never immediately associate the name [name]Tripp[/name] with the [name]Palin[/name] because the two Tripps I know are both FirstName LastName III. So I’d assume straighway it was a nickname for that, or even that they were just your third child, something like that.
I wasn’t aware of the [name]Palin[/name] association with [name]Tripp[/name], but now that I know, I think I’d want to steer clear of it. That’s just me though. If the association doesn’t bother you, it could be fine. Honestly, when I saw the subject line (before seeing ‘[name]Palin[/name]’) I thought, [name]Tripp[/name]? Sounds like a DJ name!"
I don’t think of [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Palin[/name] at all. I remember [name]Bristol[/name] and [name]Trig[/name] in relation to her, but not [name]Tripp[/name]… I see others have some association, but I think it’ll fade. [name]Tripp[/name] usually makes me think of a third, though.
I love the name [name]Tripp[/name].
And though I already knew of the connection, it’s not my most immediate thought when thinking of the name. Also, [name]Bristol[/name] [name]Palin[/name]'s fifteen minutes of fame has long been over. I think you’ll be fine.
I still of think of the Palins (shudder.) [name]Bristol[/name] has her own reality TV show now, and while I’m not sure if it’s been cancled or not, it’s bound to keep her fairly relevant. Plus, [name]Tripp[/name] doesn’t sound very appealing to me. Like another poster said, it’s like shove or push. In the end if it’s what you love, than go for it, but I would caution against it.

I like the name alot and wouldn’t necessacarily associate it with the Palins. I think you should use it.
[name]Tripp[/name] is not now nor has it ever been solely associated with [name]Palin[/name]. Are there really people who rule names out because they’re shared by a politician’s grandson?
I know a handful of guys called [name]Tripp[/name], teenaged and younger. It is a common nickname for the III.
