Tristan? what image does this name give? what names are similar?

I have been considering this name if we have a boy but am having a hard time because the only [name]Tristan[/name] I’ve ever known was female. What do you think of this name? Any names that you think are similar style for me to compare to?

I’ve known a male [name]Tristan[/name] and a female [name]Tristan[/name]. I believe it’s traditionally a boy’s name, though. I’ve heard some say it’s too close to [name]Kristin[/name], but that’s not a very popular name anymore, so I imagine it’s not going to be a big problem for him. If you love it, go for it!

Like it. I think of [name]Tristan[/name] and [name]Isolde[/name].

I love [name]Tristan[/name] but I’ve never heard it on a girl before. Always seemed such a male name. It has a magical feel to me and reminds me of [name]Fabian[/name], [name]Evaine[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Percival[/name], [name]Luna[/name], [name]Gawain[/name], [name]Guinevere[/name]…

I immediately picture [name]Brad[/name] [name]Pitt[/name] and Legends of the Fall! But that’s not really a bad thing, he was so masculine in that movie!

The only [name]Tristan[/name] I’ve met was [name]Male[/name]. I don’t see this as a female name at all. [name]Tristan[/name] makes me think of warriors with a caring, sensitive side.

All male. [name]Tristan[/name] and [name]Isolde[/name]… “You were in my arms for the first time, and you said my name, “[name]Tristan[/name]”. I answered you: “[name]Isolde[/name]”. [name]Isolde[/name]. The world became a word.” Romantic, no?

Also, in possibly the worst movie ever made [name]King[/name] [name]Arthur[/name], hottie [name]Mads[/name] Mikkelsen plays [name]Tristan[/name]. Not a bad image at all…

Yes nowadays it’s used for both boys and girls, although traditionally it is a boy’s name. It’s a little too romantic and trendy-sounding for my tastes.

Thanks for the replies, glad that most have a positive male image of the name

I picture it as Medieval Lite - I get a bit of a swords-and-chivalry image, but not in the too eye-popping over the top Tolkien way.

[name]Tristan[/name] goes with [name]Gareth[/name], [name]Alan[/name], [name]Sebastian[/name], [name]Alaric[/name] ([name]Alaric[/name] is edging towards over-the-top medieval but still isn’t quite in Mordred/Boromir territory [name]IMO[/name]) and [name]Edmund[/name].

My husband’s name is [name]Tristan[/name], I do not see it as feminine or trendy, but masculine and medieval in a [name]Knight[/name]'s of the Round Table kind of way… great name.

Firstly I think of [name]Tristan[/name] and [name]Isolde[/name], its handsome for sure but it feels too chivalric for me. And somehow that turns me off, I’m not sure why though. [name]Will[/name] have to keep pondering on that thought.
