Trouble with Mae

We are currently not expecting, but trying for baby #2! We have a 1 year old daughter named [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]. I have loved this name since I was in the 7th grade, we contemplated the names [name_f]Mae[/name_f] and [name_u]Bristol[/name_u] (family name). My best friend just had a daughter a few months ago and named her [name_u]Bristol[/name_u] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]. And they call her [name_u]Bristol[/name_u] sometimes and they call her [name_f]Mae[/name_f] too. Their 3 year old cant say [name_u]Bristol[/name_u] so calls her [name_f]Mae[/name_f], and so sometimes thats what other people call her. The only name my husband and I agree on is [name_f]Mae[/name_f], and it is my #1 choice. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it would be ok to name her [name_f]Mae[/name_f], even though my friend has a daughter they call [name_f]Mae[/name_f]? I dont feel right using [name_u]Bristol[/name_u] since it is the first name of her child. Any suggestions for names like [name_f]Mae[/name_f]?

Other names I like are :

[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Constance[/name_f] ( but hate [name_u]Connie[/name_u])
[name_u]Harper[/name_u] ( becoming to popular)
[name_f]Layla[/name_f] ( to popular)
[name_f]Lux[/name_f]

Names my husband loves are:

[name_f]Holly[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f]
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]

I just had this same problem with a friend. I talked to her and she said it wasn’t an issue- use whatever name we wanted. I picked my second fav choice as it was further from her daughters name.

Like [name_f]Mae[/name_f]:
Could be nn [name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_f]Mavis[/name_f]
[name_f]Maven[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Maple[/name_f]
[name_u]June[/name_u]

[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] and [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] are a sweet pairing.

Names you might like:
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] ( same ending as [name_f]Adeline[/name_f])
[name_u]Hadley[/name_u]
[name_f]Corinna[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f]

I think that [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] and or [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] would be a good substitution if you are worried about naming your child [name_f]Mae[/name_f].

Here are some others you may like that would go good with [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]:

[name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_f]Roxanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Susanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps you out!

I’ve had the same problem with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]…only the person who used the name is not a friend, an annoying relative.

Maybe, causally ask the friend what she thinks?

Personally, since your friend and her family are using both names, interchangeably, I would use [name_f]Mae[/name_f] as a middle name and find another first name that you and your husband like.

I think [name_f]Molly[/name_f] or [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] goes best with [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] if you think you can’t use [name_f]Mae[/name_f] (which I prefer to both of those). Maybe the [name_f]May[/name_f] spelling would differentiate it enough. Or [name_f]Mae[/name_f]/[name_f]May[/name_f] as a nn for another name: [name_f]Mavis[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] would be an adorable pair.

Thank you everyone! I love the suggestion [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] and using [name_f]Mae[/name_f] as a nickname!

I also really love [name_f]Esme[/name_f] but my husband shot it down because he thinks of the Twilight movies

Husbands do that :frowning:
Definitely just talk to your friend about it. I like [name_f]Mae[/name_f], you should go with whatever feels right to you.

That said, we like the name [name_f]Stella[/name_f] (it was my grandmother’s name) but we won’t be using it cause our close friends named their daughter [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] nn [name_f]Stella[/name_f]. C’est la vie.

[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f]. And it goes well with [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] imo. Also, maybe [name_f]Lilian[/name_f] [name_u]Bristol[/name_u]?
