Choosing a name encompasses so many things: look, sound, how it flows with the mn and surname, meaning, positive or negative associations etc…[name]Roman[/name] is a STRONG name (almost macho) and that’s a turnoff for me. Convicted felon [name]Roman[/name] Polanski taints the name further for me. It’s also a very descriptive word (noun and adjective): [name]Roman[/name] numerals, [name]Roman[/name] Catholic Church, [name]Roman[/name] Empire, [name]Roman[/name] citizen, a type of print, a novel etc…All of these should be weighed before deciding.
I would seriously consider it for a future child – HOWEVER, Its descriptive nature (noun & adjective), which mischa pointed out, coupled with our last name (which is a noun, a verb AND an adjective!) takes it completely out of contention.
I should have added that I would probably only use it in the middle name spot due to lots of connections to the name, such as the [name]Roman[/name] Catholic Church, [name]Roman[/name] Empire etc. that others have mentioned.
I know a couple who just had [name]Roman[/name] [name]Yorick[/name]. That made me like it a lot more - at first I thought it was a little macho but when you see it on a baby it ‘works’
The [name]Roman[/name] Polanski association is unfortunate but my mind doesn’t automatically go there every time I think of this name - thankfully. You have all given me a lot to think about, thank you. I think my biggest issue with this name is the fact that it is a noun and adjective, my partner keeps saying that once we associate it with our baby, that won’t matter - similarly to what [name]Kerrie[/name] just said in terms of finding the name “macho” I guess. Although it has grown on me I still just don’t know…
I love it - we have been to [name]Rome[/name] and loved it, so it’s a very special name to us. It just isn’t on our list of names because we fortunately or unfortunately love many other boy names. I even toyed with [name]Roma[/name] (the Italian pronounciation of the city) for a girl, but hubby wasn’t as crazy about that one… too close to [name]Norma[/name].
I love it - it’s a wonderful name. I don’t know whether I would consider it for my own children, as it hadn’t occurred to me until a close friend named her son [name]Roman[/name], and now I wouldn’t use it because it’s his name. I think there are many positive associations as well, and while it is a very strong name, it leads to some approachable and sweet nicknames like [name]Mannie[/name] and Romes.
Thanks for all the comments and votes, all very helpful!! elilyc - I never even thought of [name]Mannie[/name] as a nickname, that’s actually really cute!
I voted “I like it on other people’s kids, but would not consider it for my own child.” The name sounds funny with my last name. Which is a plural noun. That’s the only reason why I wouldn’t use it.
I’m not pregnant yet but I have fought hard for this name! I think it is absolutely beautiful and when I think of [name]Roman[/name] I think of a strong, kind, intelligent and beautiful man. I don’t agree with the [name]Roman[/name] Polanski thing because he is one of those famous people like [name]Samuel[/name] L [name]Jackson[/name] where the full name is always used. People wouldn’t generally associate the name [name]Samuel[/name] with SLJ and I think the same goes for [name]Roman[/name].
I feel like I flip flop on this name depending on what people say about it, but that probably just speaks to my indecisivenes about it. the poll results so far have surprised me, I think I was expecting more people to dislike the name. My family and friends seem to like this one the least, but it’s in my partner’s top 2.
I like [name]Roman[/name], and really loved it a few years back - but it doesn’t fit my style much now to use on one of my children. Very handsome name though.
