I have a list of 15 boys names that I can not narrow down anymore. I love something about every name on the list. I would like to start TTC next year and I don’t want to start with a huge list.
I would remove:
~ [name]Alden[/name]: Never heard of this name before but I just don’t like the sounds in it.
~ [name]Julian[/name]: Too middle-aged. I know it sounds stupid but I can’t image a baby named [name]Julian[/name]!
~ [name]Louis[/name]: If you’re pronouncing it like [name]Lewis[/name], just call him [name]Lewis[/name] maybe? Although I don’t like [name]Lewis[/name] either, nor do I like the pronunciation of [name]Louis[/name] ‘loo-ee’.
~ [name]Raphael[/name]: Too many syllables that I don’t think fit together very well.
~ [name]Silas[/name]: [name]Just[/name] don’t like the sounds.
~ [name]Simon[/name]: Too boring and unattractive.
~ [name]Vincent[/name]: Might get teased for his name, not very ‘cool’.
I would be on the fence about:
~ [name]August[/name]: If you’ve ever watched the film ‘Water for Elephants’, you’ll understand what I mean! Unfortunately ruined that name for me!
~ [name]Henry[/name]: Always reminds me of [name]Henry[/name] VIII, the big fat king.
~ [name]Hugo[/name]: Sounds a bit snobby, although I do like it.
~ [name]Jasper[/name]: [name]One[/name] of the vampires in Twilight, could get pretty popular.
~ [name]Thomas[/name]: Overused. [name]Way[/name] too popular! But still nice.
I would keep:
~ [name]Oliver[/name]: Couldn’t use this myself as I have a brother name [name]Oliver[/name]. However, I love this name & I love the nickname [name]Ollie[/name].
~ [name]Oscar[/name]: [name]One[/name] of my favourites! Gorgeous name!
~ [name]Sebastian[/name]: Really like the nickname [name]Seb[/name] but not 100% sold on [name]Sebastian[/name]. Would have to be used as a first name in order for the nickname to be used, so I wouldn’t personally have it as a middle name.
[name]August[/name] – Soft but still masculine and nicely old fashioned
[name]Raphael[/name] (rahf-eye-el) – I’m using this one. It makes me think of artists and the Renaissance. so handsome love it!
[name]Sebastian[/name] – This one was on our list for a while too. I think it’s quirky but still handsome and [name]Bastian[/name] or Bast are cool nicknames
[name]Simon[/name] – I’ve always had a soft spot for [name]Simon[/name]. intellectual but cool with the nn [name]Si[/name]
I’m really only going by my own feelings for the names. I have no way of knowing why they are significant to you or what particularly attracts you to the name. I hope this is what you intended when you made the thread, as I do not want to offend.
Names I would keep:
[name]August[/name] – A handsome name, and one that actually has a nn I adore ([name]Gus[/name]). This (or a variant) would probably be on my own list if I had not named my cat [name]Gustav[/name] ([name]Gus[/name]).
[name]Henry[/name]-- Not particularly a favorite of mine, but it’s very cute for a child while still wearable for an adult.
[name]Hugo[/name] – I go back and forth with [name]Hugo[/name]. I always like it, but some days I’m positive it will be the name of a future child, and some days I just like the idea of it.
[name]Oscar[/name] – This has always been a favorite of mine. I don’t really know how to explain why.
[name]Raphael[/name] – I’m still on the fence with this one, but I didn’t want to write it off entirely. It seems like a lot to live up to, and it very much has a Ninja [name]Turtle[/name] association for this 80s kid, despite its historical associations.
[name]Sebastian[/name] – A bit on the fence with this one, too. I suggested it to my husband, and he shot it down. I asked why, and then he asked why I liked it. I couldn’t give him an answer, and he couldn’t answer me. We don’t know why we like and dislike it. It’s a weird name for us.
[name]Thomas[/name] – A bit tame, but still a solid name.
[name]Vincent[/name] – Definitely one of my favorite names! I think it’s so handsome, and the added association of [name]Vincent[/name] [name]Price[/name] is just wonderful to me.
Names I would drop:
[name]Alden[/name] – I’ve only heard this used as a given name once, and it was in a computer game. I don’t really like the sound of it.
[name]Jasper[/name] – I really want to love this name. I like the look and the sound, but the only associations I have with it are negative. It seems if you’re making a film and you want your audience to immediately recognize someone as a “bad guy”, you name him [name]Jasper[/name].
[name]Julian[/name] – I like the idea of [name]Julian[/name], but the feminine nicknames bother me.
[name]Louis[/name] – If I could guarantee that it would always be pronounced the way you have it here, I would consider this name. I just do not like the way “Loo-ey” sounds.
[name]Oliver[/name] – I do not like the way this name ages. It seems perpetually young, to me. I am also not a fan of the nn [name]Ollie[/name].
[name]Silas[/name] – Reminds me of stylus and silo.
[name]Simon[/name] – [name]Every[/name] [name]Simon[/name] I’ve ever met (well, all three of them…) has been whiny and insufferable.
I’m immediately attracted to [name]August[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]Oscar[/name], [name]Sebastian[/name] and [name]Silas[/name]! They are all gorgeous, but I think of those I love [name]August[/name] and [name]Silas[/name] because they are less popular.
I can see the appeal of [name]Hugo[/name] and [name]Jasper[/name].
[name]Alden[/name] is handsome, and I like that it is a unique name but nothing trendy, creative etc,
[name]Oliver[/name], [name]Thomas[/name], [name]Simon[/name] and [name]Vincent[/name] aren’t names that I love.
It was hard but I will only give you five to keep. To make it easier, I put them in groups of same initials, similar sounds or same endings.
[name]One[/name] only - [name]Hugo[/name] or [name]Henry[/name] - (I love the spunky and exotic [name]Hugo[/name])
[name]One[/name] only - [name]Jasper[/name], [name]Oliver[/name] or [name]Oscar[/name] (I love all of them but my fave is [name]Oliver[/name])
[name]One[/name] only - [name]Sebastian[/name]/[name]Simon[/name]/[name]Alden[/name]/[name]Julian[/name] or [name]Silas[/name]/[name]Louis[/name]/[name]Thomas[/name]/[name]August[/name]/[name]Vincent[/name] ([name]Sebastian[/name] and August win for me)
[name]Raphael[/name] is the only one that doesn’t have any similarity with any othe name on your list
So we’re left with: [name]Hugo[/name], [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Sebastian[/name], August and [name]Raphael[/name] (great sibling set)
