Trying to narrow names for kiddo due in 6 weeks

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], spouse and I are trying to narrow names for kiddo #2. Older child’s name is [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. Would love to hear thoughts on the following names (ie. preferences, references that might be problematic, etc). Thanks so much!

[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Luke[/name_m]
[name_u]Alden[/name_u]
[name_m]Edgar[/name_m]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Callum[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]Justus[/name_m]

Edited: Spouse and I talked names last night and agreed that although we love August it is to close to Thomas in sound. We also added the following names to our list. Thanks for all of your thoughts! appreciate it!

Peter (Would go by Pete)
Philip
Nathaniel (Nat or Nate)
Walter (Walt)

[name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Callum[/name_m] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] are brilliant!!

I love [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] and [name_m]Simon[/name_m].

Loving [name_m]Edgar[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Simon[/name_m].

[name_m]Edgar[/name_m] is my top pick.

I’m pleasantly surprised to see [name_u]Alden[/name_u], [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] and [name_m]Justus[/name_m] on your list. It would be wonderful to meet someone with any of these names. However, if I had to pick I would choose [name_m]Edgar[/name_m]. It’s unexpected whilst still traditional and seems most suited to older brother [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. What handsome pair [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] make!

I would be somewhat mindful of the names on your list that share the letter “s”. [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] overall sound quite similar to [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. Whilst [name_m]Justus[/name_m] sounds more distinct, it feels slightly “s” heavy when said aloud with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. I don’t see any potential issues with [name_m]Simon[/name_m].

All the best deciding.

You have a great list, my top choices with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] would be [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], and [name_m]Simon[/name_m] in no particular order.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there! @Kachenka said literally exactly the same thoughts I had when reading your list so I’ll skip over that but I will say I also love [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] and [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. I can’t believe nobody said [name_m]Luke[/name_m] yet! I think [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Luke[/name_m] make a great pair as well as [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Edgar[/name_m], though I think I lean a little bit more toward [name_m]Edgar[/name_m]. My third place vote goes to [name_m]Simon[/name_m]. Good luck to you!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and the comment about the repeat S sound. [name_m]Haden[/name_m]'t thought about that but we will definitely have to think more about the similar sounds!

[name_u]August[/name_u], [name_m]Luke[/name_m], [name_u]Alden[/name_u], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Callum[/name_m] & [name_m]Justus[/name_m] - Are all to out there with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m].

[name_m]Edgar[/name_m], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Simon[/name_m] - are all good with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m].

I’m byast as I have a [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] we are considering [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Edward[/name_m] & [name_m]Harry[/name_m] for next baby. If any of those appeal to you.

With [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], I like:
[name_m]Luke[/name_m]
[name_u]Alden[/name_u]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_m]Callum[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]

If you’re still looking, some other options might be:
[name_m]Harrison[/name_m]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Patrick[/name_m]
[name_m]Miles[/name_m]
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]

Great names! As a brother to [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], I think [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Callum[/name_m], and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] sound lovely.

While I like your other names too, some of them seem to differ a bit in style as I personally think of [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] as a standard classic name whereas a name like [name_u]Alden[/name_u] seems more up-and-coming. It’s definitely not a deal breaker, but it might help you narrow down your list. Also, I love [name_u]August[/name_u] but I think it shares too many sounds with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] (or maybe I’m the only one who hears it!)

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! I love [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]; does your son go by his full name or does he ever use [name_m]Tom[/name_m] or [name_m]Tommy[/name_m]?

—I like [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_u]August[/name_u] (a bit rhyme-y) and think [name_m]Tom[/name_m] & Auggie or [name_m]Tommy[/name_m] & [name_u]Gus[/name_u] are just as good together.
—When I see/hear [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Luke[/name_m] together my first thought is “Biblical,” which may be good, neutral, or bad in your book.
—[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_u]Alden[/name_u] sound good together, and I disagree with others who say [name_u]Alden[/name_u] is too modern/trendy. I know a two-year-old named [name_u]Alden[/name_u], and when he was named, his grandmother said (privately) that she didn’t like the name and thought it was “an old man name.” Needless to say, it’s grown on her. [name_m]Aldo[/name_m], Aldy, and [name_u]Denny[/name_u] are good nickname options.
—[name_m]Edgar[/name_m] just isn’t for me, but I see why others like it. It is firmly in the “clunky/frumpy” group, as are some of my faves, but I don’t think it fits in with the more versatile, classic, and well-loved [name_m]Thomas[/name_m].
—[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is a long-time favorite and I actually like the shared sounds with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m].
—[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] has the same gentle, historical, Anglophile feel as [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. They make a fine pair.
—The shine has worn off [name_m]Callum[/name_m] for me, along with most mainstream Irish names. It’s not my favorite for [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]’ brother.
—[name_m]Justus[/name_m] sticks out like a sore thumb here. It’s the name I like least from your list.

[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_u]Alden[/name_u]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]

If you’re still looking for ideas, what about [name_m]Ogden[/name_m], [name_m]Edward[/name_m], [name_m]Orson[/name_m], [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m], [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Julian[/name_m], [name_m]Graham[/name_m]?

[name_u]August[/name_u] - I love [name_u]August[/name_u], and I think the style works well with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], but they’re a bit of a tongue-twister together.
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] - I love [name_m]Luke[/name_m]! Why don’t I see more [name_m]Lukes[/name_m]? An underused classic in my opinion, and great with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m].
[name_u]Alden[/name_u] - This is more unexpected with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], but they work well together. I really like this for you.
[name_m]Edgar[/name_m] - [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] reminds me of the villains in The Aristocats and [name_f]Ella[/name_f] Enchanted. It just sounds harsh and dated. I can kind of see the clunky cool appeal on a child, but I definitely think this name would be ripe for teasing.
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] - [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is a Nameberry favorite, but I’m not really a fan. I agree with pp that the repeating sounds in [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] isn’t great, either.
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] - This feels sort of “expected,” but only because [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] works so well next to [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. The only thing I don’t like about [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is the lack of good nicknames.
[name_m]Callum[/name_m] - I like the repeating “m” sound between [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Callum[/name_m], I think it ties them together nicely. [name_u]Cal[/name_u] is so great, too.
[name_m]Simon[/name_m] - If I had twin boys, [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Simon[/name_m] would be a top contender for their names. These feel perfect together, and I love the underused [name_m]Simon[/name_m].
[name_m]Justus[/name_m] - I’m really not a fan of this name, and I don’t think it matches the friendly, classic feeling of [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. Also not crazy about the repeating ending sound.

My top votes go to [name_m]Simon[/name_m] or [name_u]Alden[/name_u], with [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] and [name_m]Callum[/name_m] as runner-ups.

i’m really feeling [name_m]Callum[/name_m]

I really like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] alongside [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]

Thanks again to everyone who has commented. So many useful things to consider! Kiddo goes by their full name [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]; We had hoped to use the nickname Tommo but since age 3 kiddo has strongly preferred [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] so that is what we call him and he will correct most adults who call him [name_m]Tommy[/name_m] or [name_m]Tom[/name_m].

We talked names last night and agreed that while we love [name_u]August[/name_u] it really is too hard to say/has too many sounds in common with [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. We also added a couple more names to consider: [name_m]Philip[/name_m], [name_m]Peter[/name_m] (Would go by [name_m]Pete[/name_m] since one of my brothers is [name_m]Peter[/name_m]), [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] ([name_u]Nat[/name_u] or [name_m]Nate[/name_m]) and [name_m]Walter[/name_m] ([name_m]Walt[/name_m]).
