Tweak my sibset!! Thank you! :-)

[name]Hi[/name] Berries!

I’ve been planning a sibset for a while on here now, but just wanted to check out some questions, to make sure of a few things!

My son’s name is [name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Caleb[/name] [name]Noah[/name].

My husband is Scottish, and I have distant Irish and Scottish roots.

It’s very important to us that our children’s full names ‘flow together’.

The names I like for future siblings for [name]Lorcan[/name] are:

[name]Elspeth[/name], [name]Findlay[/name] and [name]Greer[/name].

  1. [name]How[/name] do you think these names go together?

  2. [name]Every[/name] so often, we wonder if [name]Elspeth[/name] should be [name]Maeve[/name]! What are your thoughts as to which works best, given our son’s name, our heritage and the tone / sound of the other names?

  3. I am having an endless headache with middle names! We think [name]Findlay[/name] will be [name]Findlay[/name] [name]Asher[/name] [name]Michael[/name], but the girls are difficult. In the last couple of days, we have been wondering about [name]Greer[/name] [name]Hannah[/name] [name]Sadie[/name] or [name]Greer[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name] [name]Sadie[/name] ([name]Sadie[/name] is a family name on both sides). Does it fit? For [name]Elspeth[/name], I have no idea what would be best! Please suggest middle names for [name]Elspeth[/name] and [name]Greer[/name] that fit my set!

  4. What do you think of my names in general?

Please feel free to tweak and suggest away! I can’t wait to hear your expert feedback!

Best wishes,

Kath xx

[name]Hi[/name], Kath!

  1. They sound great together. I wouldn’t tweak if you love them, especially after all you’ve been through to find four names you like together. Their shared origins really make the names flow wonderfully…

  2. Definitely keep [name]Elspeth[/name]! [name]Both[/name] [name]Lorcan[/name] and [name]Greer[/name] are relatively harsh sounding names, whereas - as we’ve discussed - [name]Findlay[/name] is comparably “light.” You need [name]Elspeth[/name] in there to bring another soft name into the set, I think. [name]Maeve[/name] is very much like [name]Greer[/name] in that it isn’t overtly feminine. I think [name]Elspeth[/name] is too perfect with [name]Lorcan[/name] to pass up, too!

  3. [name]Love[/name] [name]Findlay[/name] [name]Asher[/name] [name]Michael[/name] with [name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Caleb[/name] [name]Noah[/name]! Absolutely perfect! I think you should use [name]Sarah[/name] instead of [name]Sadie[/name] - [name]Sadie[/name] is [name]Sarah[/name]'s diminutive - as it sounds more complete and better fits with the other names you have chosen. I would recommend [name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] [name]Sarah[/name], I think! And, while [name]Greer[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name] sounds nice, [name]Tabitha[/name] is the only non-Hebrew name you’ve selected. Does that bother you? [name]Just[/name] some thoughts…

If you use - obviously, you have! - [name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Caleb[/name] [name]Noah[/name] with [name]Findlay[/name] [name]Asher[/name] [name]Michael[/name] and [name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] [name]Sarah[/name], you have two second middle names ending in an H. So, maybe it would be good to have another Hebrew second middle name ending in L - like [name]Michael[/name] - for [name]Greer[/name]? Maybe you could switch [name]Rachel[/name] from [name]Elspeth[/name]'s name and use it for [name]Greer[/name]'s second middle name, too! Here are some ideas!

[name]Greer[/name] [name]Jesse[/name] [name]Abigail[/name]
[name]Greer[/name] [name]Leah[/name] [name]Jezebel[/name]
[name]Greer[/name] [name]Hannah[/name] [name]Rachel[/name]

If you use [name]Rachel[/name] with [name]Greer[/name], you could try something like this for [name]Elspeth[/name]:

[name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Eden[/name] [name]Sarah[/name]
[name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Mary[/name] [name]Sarah[/name]

Or, try [name]Greer[/name] [name]Naomi[/name] [name]Sarah[/name] and [name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Hannah[/name] [name]Rachel[/name], [name]Greer[/name] [name]Mariam[/name] [name]Sarah[/name] and [name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Leah[/name] [name]Rachel[/name], or [name]Greer[/name] [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Naomi[/name] and [name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Abigail[/name] [name]Ruth[/name]!

  1. Kath, I love your names, especially [name]Elspeth[/name] and [name]Findlay[/name], of course!

Good luck!

[name]Lemon[/name]

They sound good together. I like [name]Greer[/name] especially. [name]Maeve[/name] for [name]Elspeth[/name] is good. People might feel inclined to call her [name]Elizabeth[/name]. Good job though.

GREAT suggestions, [name]Lemon[/name]! My husband and I were poring over them last night! We thik [name]Greer[/name] [name]Hannah[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] sounds really classy. We are also quite liking [name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Eden[/name] [name]Sarah[/name], which is strange, because [name]Eden[/name] is a name that was never really on our radar. Does it work? [name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Caleb[/name] [name]Noah[/name] and [name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Eden[/name] [name]Sarah[/name]? Hmmm. Your idea of the ‘H’ and ‘L’ endings is great! It even prompted us to consider the name [name]Carmel[/name] (which is pretty common in [name]Ireland[/name]) - what do you think?

Kath xx

or…

[name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Caleb[/name] [name]Noah[/name]

[name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Eva[/name] [name]Rachel[/name]

[name]Findlay[/name] [name]Asher[/name] [name]Michael[/name]

[name]Greer[/name] [name]Naomi[/name] [name]Sarah[/name]

WDYT?

Kath xx

[name]Hi[/name], Kath!

I like both [name]Greer[/name] [name]Hannah[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] and [name]Greer[/name] [name]Naomi[/name] [name]Rachel[/name], I think! [name]Do[/name] you have a preference? I think [name]Hannah[/name] sounds softer like both [name]Caleb[/name] and [name]Asher[/name], so I guess I’d pick that one, myself. [name]Carmel[/name] is so pretty, but since you’ve got more typical Hebrew names like [name]Noah[/name] and [name]Michael[/name], you might want to stick with a more traditional name for [name]Greer[/name], too…

As for [name]Elspeth[/name], what were the two combos? [name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Eva[/name] [name]Rachel[/name], or was it [name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Eva[/name] [name]Sarah[/name]? And, [name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Eden[/name] [name]Sarah[/name]? I think [name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Eva[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] or [name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Eden[/name] [name]Sarah[/name] are both beautiful!

[name]Lemon[/name]

[name]Hi[/name], [name]Lemon[/name]!

I, too, prefer [name]Greer[/name] [name]Hannah[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] to [name]Greer[/name] [name]Naomi[/name] [name]Sarah[/name]. So, in that case, it would be:

[name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Caleb[/name] [name]Noah[/name]
[name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Eden[/name] [name]Sarah[/name]
[name]Findlay[/name] [name]Asher[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
[name]Greer[/name] [name]Hannah[/name] [name]Rachel[/name]

All great names in my opinion! However, a couple of things with this combo:

  1. I’m not sure about [name]Eden[/name]! I used to think it was tacky, but lately I’m thinking it’s quite lovely! What are your thoughts on the name? Is it on the verge of becoming a little trendy?

  2. When I look at the sibset as a whole, [name]Lorcan[/name]'s name stands out to me. I think this is because, when looking at the other three names, I see (hear!) a lot of similar, soft sounds, which tie them all together nicely. The sounds in [name]Lorcan[/name]'s name seem a little different - the C’s and the strong ‘O’ in [name]Noah[/name]. I actually like these harsher sounds within [name]Lorcan[/name]'s name, and it bothers me a little that they aren’t replicated anywhere else within the sibset. If there were similar sounds present in just a couple of the other names, the whole thing would gel so much better for me! [name]Do[/name] you know what I mean at all? I don’t know if that makes any sense? So while, for example, I prefer [name]Greer[/name] [name]Hannah[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] to [name]Greer[/name] [name]Naomi[/name] [name]Sarah[/name] per se, I feel that [name]Greer[/name] [name]Naomi[/name] [name]Sarah[/name] fits better with [name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Caleb[/name] [name]Noah[/name], because there are similar sounds present within the names. I feel using [name]Carmel[/name] somewhere may also ease this for me (that aside, I really do love the name [name]Carmel[/name] - its history, its unusualness, the way it sounds so sweet (like Caramel!) and the way it reminds me of [name]Ireland[/name]). When I was seriously considering [name]Findlay[/name] [name]Asher[/name] [name]Jacob[/name], I felt that the sounds within [name]Jacob[/name] echoed some of the sounds in [name]Lorcan[/name]'s names, the hard ‘a’ sound, and the ‘c’. We are still definitely going with [name]Findlay[/name] [name]Asher[/name] [name]Michael[/name], by the way! We know that is absolutely the best combo! I’m just kind of hungering for there to be some sounds that echo those within [name]Lorcan[/name]'s name, to pull the whole thing beautifully together. I’m not sure if you will have any suggestions? Somehow, this matters to me, even though it probably shouldn’t!

Kath xx

p.s. I [name]LOVE[/name] that you love my names! I took [name]Lorcan[/name] to a play session today and I could tell that a lot of the moms there thought his name was strange! Literally, every other little boy there was called [name]Harry[/name] or [name]Jack[/name] - there were loads of them!

.

Hey, Kath!

To be honest, I think you are way over-thinking this! But, I understand your desire to get the perfect set, so I want you to love it…

[name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Caleb[/name] [name]Noah[/name]
[name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Eden[/name] [name]Sarah[/name]
[name]Findlay[/name] [name]Asher[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
[name]Greer[/name] [name]Hannah[/name] [name]Rachel[/name]

I think you need to evaluate the way the names sound together from a first name perspective, first and foremost. [name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Elspeth[/name], [name]Findlay[/name], and [name]Greer[/name] - what do you hear, what do you think, what do you envision? [name]Lorcan[/name] feels strong and masculine to me, [name]Elspeth[/name] feels ethereal and elegant to me, [name]Findlay[/name] feels quirky and playful to me, and [name]Greer[/name] feels confident and determined to me. Thus, together they make a well-rounded set of names!

Let us next assess the primary middle names given to each child in this hypothetical set. [name]Caleb[/name], [name]Eden[/name], [name]Asher[/name], and [name]Hannah[/name] - what do you hear, what do you feel, what do you envision? [name]Caleb[/name] feels sweet and charming to me, [name]Eden[/name] feels modern and natural to me, [name]Asher[/name] feels happy and soothing to me, and [name]Hannah[/name] feels playful and girlish to me. Each name incorporates a different end-sound, yet, overall, each conveys a soft, sweet, happy feeling. However, not one of these names is “too soft,” as [name]Caleb[/name] has the hard C and B sounds, [name]Eden[/name] has the hard D sound, [name]Asher[/name] has the strong SH and R sounds and [name]Hannah[/name] has the strong N sound - thus, though ethereal and light in their connotation, each name has presence, lending a unified front to the set.

(As a side note, to answer your question, I don’t see [name]Eden[/name] as being trendy or tacky. Quite the contrary, actually - I see [name]Eden[/name] as strong and stunning, elegant yet modern, and subtly feminine. Much like its namesake, the Garden of [name]Eden[/name], the name has a calming, spiritual undertone for me. And, though it might have taken off following the birth of [name]Marcia[/name] [name]Cross[/name]’ twins, [name]Eden[/name] and [name]Savannah[/name], I don’t think it has quite reached celebrity status.)

Finally, let us take a look at the secondary middle names of each child’s name. [name]Noah[/name], [name]Sarah[/name], [name]Michael[/name], and [name]Rachel[/name] - what do you hear, what do you feel, what do you envision? [name]Noah[/name] feels calm yet commanding to me, [name]Sarah[/name] feels motherly and soft to me, [name]Michael[/name] feels honorable and strong to me, and [name]Rachel[/name] feels kind and personable to me. Together, you have a set of names that convey powerful emotions, good ones, creating a sense of warmth and strength. With two names ending in -ah mirrored by two names ending in -el, you have a further sense of unity within the sibling set, conveying a sense of planning.

Finally, let us look at each name individually, by the characteristics it conveys to me. I said that [name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Caleb[/name] [name]Noah[/name] was strong, masculine, sweet, charming, calm, and commanding. I said that [name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Eden[/name] [name]Sarah[/name] was ethereal, elegant, modern, natural, motherly, and soft. I said that [name]Findlay[/name] [name]Asher[/name] [name]Michael[/name] was quirky, playful, happy, soothing, honorable, and strong. I said that [name]Greer[/name] [name]Hannah[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] was confident, determined, playful, girlish, kind, and personable. Together, each name is a unified whole, a solid package of harsh and soft, playful and strong, modern and vintage.

To me, it is much more important what image and feel a name conveys as opposed to the sound it makes, as long as that sound has appropriate flow - which all of your names do. If you are bothered by the sounds, feel free to re-examine your name combinations! Otherwise, I would leave them be…

[name]Greer[/name] [name]Naomi[/name] [name]Sarah[/name] is a very pretty name, but, to me, [name]Naomi[/name] and [name]Sarah[/name] have very similar feels, whereas [name]Greer[/name] [name]Hannah[/name] [name]Rachel[/name] combines three names that have very distinct images and feels into one unified name. And, I know you love [name]Carmel[/name], but I personally don’t see it having the same feel as [name]Noah[/name], [name]Sarah[/name], [name]Rachel[/name], and [name]Michael[/name], being that it is much more unusual. [name]Just[/name] think about it, okay?

Good luck!

[name]Lemon[/name]

Thank you for all of your input, [name]Lemon[/name]. I really do appreciate it.

Can anyone else tell me what they think?

[name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Caleb[/name] [name]Noah[/name]
[name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Eden[/name] [name]Sarah[/name]
[name]Findlay[/name] [name]Asher[/name] [name]Michael[/name]
[name]Greer[/name] [name]Hannah[/name] [name]Rachel[/name]

Thanks, Kath xx

I think there are better Scottish and Irish names that are more subtle and will not cause teasing and strife for the poor kid.

[name]Hi[/name] Kath!

By the way, I really like the name [name]Lorcan[/name]!

I feel like [name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Elspeth[/name] and [name]Findlay[/name] connect very well together but I don’t see [name]Greer[/name] quite as perfect with the other three. I actually think that with something as soft and feminine as [name]Elspeth[/name], [name]Maeve[/name] would work better. I also really like that [name]Lorcan[/name] is characterized from his siblings by the hard ‘c’ sound, [name]Elspeth[/name] with the ‘p’ sound, [name]Findlay[/name] with the ‘d’ sound and [name]Maeve[/name] with the ‘v’ sound. [name]Greer[/name] feels slightly different because it has the double ‘e’ as its prominent, more notable letter. I realize I’m being quite nit-picky but [name]Lemon[/name] really did a fantastic overview and I can’t really find much else that she hasn’t covered. So, I think the first names are wonderful whether [name]Maeve[/name] or [name]Greer[/name] is used.

For the first middles, I think [name]Asher[/name], [name]Caleb[/name] and [name]Hannah[/name] work wonderfully together. However, I feel like [name]Eden[/name] is the one left out. [name]Eden[/name] has been called trendy but I disagree as it hasn’t reached a huge level of popularity despite some celebrity use and so, it still feels more unique and unheard of than the obviously popular other three. I think something more classic (because I’m thinking [name]Eden[/name] might become dated soon as so many people find it rather trendy) would worked better. Some names off the top of my mind are [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Mae[/name]/[name]Maeve[/name], [name]Rory[/name], [name]Stella[/name], [name]Anna[/name], [name]Grace[/name], [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Claire[/name], [name]Natalie[/name], [name]Abigail[/name], [name]Leah[/name], [name]Laura[/name] and [name]Katherine[/name].

The second middle names are the best set in terms of matching together, in my opinion. I like that [name]Noah[/name] and [name]Sarah[/name] share the ‘ah’ ending and [name]Michael[/name] and [name]Rachel[/name] share the ‘el’ ending (which, if I’m not mistaken, [name]Lemon[/name] already pointed out.) They’re all Biblical and well-known to the point of popularity and I really like them together.

So all in all, I really like this sibset! Good luck!

I’ve always found Nameberry to be such a refreshingly friendly, polite, tolerant and mature forum through which to respectfully share different opinions on names. I have found differences in opinion to be celebrated, and criticism and advice to be gentle and extremely constructive.

Then you came along. Oh dear.

I, and every other delightful person I have encountered on this site, happily embrace (and ask for) constructive criticism, but your comment suggests nothing useful. It’s just mean-spirited, snarky and immature. If you have nothing nice (or constructive) to say, best not say anything at all.
