Twin name help!

Our twin boys are due next month and could be here any time now. We had decided on [name]Lachlan[/name] and Broden for their names but the closer it gets the more we are doubting those names. I wanted at least one Scottish name since my husband is from [name]Scotland[/name] but I’m just not crazy about [name]Lachlan[/name] anymore. We had a good friend just name her baby boy [name]Brody[/name] which is probably what we would have called Broden. My husband wants something different. He loves the name [name]Fox[/name] and it has kind of grown on me but I’m not sure. We have decided on their middle names, one will be [name]Alexander[/name] and one will be [name]Robert[/name] after both of our fathers. So any opinions on [name]Fox[/name] as a first name and another name that would go well with [name]Fox[/name]?

[name]Fox[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]
??? [name]Robert[/name]

Or any Scottish baby name suggestions?? I never knew picking names would be this hard!

Congratulations on your boys!

Of the [name]Lachlan[/name]/Broden pair, I infinitely prefer [name]Lachlan[/name]. Broden is kind of a smash name between [name]Braden[/name] and [name]Brody[/name], whereas [name]Lachlan[/name] has a distinctive sound and appearance, and centuries-old Scottish roots.

Secondly, I think if one brother were named something very attention-grabbing like [name]Fox[/name] and the other had a more traditional name (even a striking one like [name]Lachlan[/name]), the pair would seem mismatched, but more importantly one brother could begin to resent the other. The one with the wild name could yearn for something that let him blend into the crowd a bit more, like his brother; the one with the classic name would get jealous of all the attention his brother’s name drew. So if you name one boy [name]Fox[/name], then you need to name the other one [name]Enzo[/name] or [name]Mack[/name] or [name]Bjorn[/name] or something.

I genuinely like [name]Lachlan[/name]. Here are some Scottish suggestions (which you might choose from to replace Broden, [name]Lachlan[/name] or both):

Alpin/ MacAlpin
[name]Alastair[/name]
[name]Angus[/name]
[name]Archibald[/name]
[name]Artair[/name]
[name]Arran[/name] (an island, not a variant of [name]Aaron[/name])

Let us know if there are any you like, and we can go from there. If you want some ‘wild’ suggestions that could pair with [name]Fox[/name]:

[name]Axel[/name]
[name]Drake[/name]
[name]Justus[/name]
[name]Neo[/name]
[name]Wolfgang[/name]
[name]Birch[/name]
[name]Enzo[/name]
[name]Cosmo[/name]
[name]Coltrane[/name]
[name]Thelonious[/name]
[name]North[/name]
[name]Bjorn[/name]

I love nature and word names as first names, and I find [name]Fox[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] quite dashing! That being said, if you want a Scottish name for his brother, that could be tricky, unless sibset harmony is not important to you.

Some Scottish names that could work with MN [name]Robert[/name]:
[name]Angus[/name] (chosen one of unique strength)
[name]Barclay[/name] (birch tree meadow) - I like this one because it combines elements of [name]Lachlan[/name] and Broden, your two previous favorites, but is so unique and fresh and strong on its own
[name]Callum[/name] (dove, and by association, peace)
[name]Colin[/name] (victory of the people; also, young cub)
[name]Douglas[/name] (literally, dark green or blue)
[name]Duncan[/name] (dark-skinned warrior)
[name]Finlay[/name] (fair hero)
[name]Gavin[/name] (white hawk)
[name]Lennox[/name] (from the field of elm trees)
[name]Patrick[/name] / [name]Padraig[/name] (noble stone; anchor stone)
[name]Tavish[/name] (literally means a twin! little tongue in cheek there)

I found something interesting in this search: The name [name]Todd[/name] is Scottish, and it means fox! [name]Todd[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] is a great combination, and lends itself well to a Scottish FN for [name]Robert[/name].

I think sometimes looking at the meaning of a name really helps with the decision making process! (For example, [name]Lachlan[/name] means belligerent, and Broden means of the ditch. I think you dodged a bullet with the latter) I think wanting to bestow a meaningful Scottish name honoring your husband’s heritage is a lovely idea. And maybe finding something that is personal to you in the meanings of the names on your list would be a good way to honor you as well, and give your boys names that reflect a little piece of both of you

Some nature/word names that go with MN [name]Robert[/name], to match [name]Fox[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] (I’m sticking to 2+ syllables that don’t begin or end in R):
[name]Falcon[/name]
[name]Aspen[/name]
[name]Basil[/name]
[name]Onyx[/name]
[name]Forrest[/name]
Bracken (sounds divine with [name]Robert[/name] and fits perfectly into the sibset)
[name]Hawthorne[/name]
[name]Sterling[/name]
Tannin
[name]Canyon[/name]
[name]Phoenix[/name]
[name]Orson[/name] (French for bear)
[name]Gryphon[/name]/[name]Griffin[/name]

My favorites for you:
[name]Todd[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] and [name]Gavin[/name] [name]Robert[/name] – [name]Todd[/name] and [name]Gavin[/name] are both Scottish names with nature meanings, [name]Todd[/name] the fox and [name]Gavin[/name] the hawk.
[name]Duncan[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] and [name]Barclay[/name] [name]Robert[/name] – I love [name]Barclay[/name] for you for all the reasons above, and [name]Duncan[/name] is such a perfect match. [name]Both[/name] are strong, masculine Scottish names.
[name]Fox[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] and Bracken [name]Robert[/name] – If you go all natural, as it were, this is my most favorite favorite combination! Bracken, like [name]Barclay[/name], echoes some of the sounds of [name]Lachlan[/name] and Broden, and is a perfect match with [name]Fox[/name]. And even as a standalone name, Bracken [name]Robert[/name] just exudes a rugged sort of class.

Good luck with your decision! Let us know how it all turns out!

Ooh, [name]Fox[/name] and Bracken sound smashing together! Like both pp, I think if you use a name like [name]Fox[/name] (which I love, btw), his brother should also have a ‘stand out’ name. That doesn’t mean (to me) that it can’t be traditional, but it would sound better [name]IMO[/name] if it were unusual. I love the suggestions that have been given, especially [name]Orson[/name], [name]Griffin[/name], and [name]North[/name]. I also like [name]Enzo[/name], but it sounds very authentic Italian to me (which you may or may not like).

Good luck choosing and congrats!

Thanks for all the great input. I agree that if we go with [name]Fox[/name] we need another name that will stand out just as much. I really like the suggestion of Bracken but hubby said no. At this point I have been thru so many baby names I don’t even know what to think.

Some names that are possible contenders:

[name]Ace[/name]
[name]Wilder[/name]
[name]Atticus[/name]
[name]Grey[/name]
[name]Leo[/name]

[name]Fox[/name] is definitely growing on me but I think it is going to be hard to come up with a name that will go well with it for his brother.

I think every one of these suggested names, except [name]Ace[/name], would pair beautifully with [name]Lachlan[/name]. My favorite, by far, would be [name]Lachlan[/name] & [name]Ramsey[/name]. With both you have obvious Scottish roots and a subtle nature connectionl-- [name]Lachlan[/name] is related to the word ‘loch,’ and [name]Ramsey[/name] is a beautiful island.

For [name]Fox[/name]: [name]Ace[/name], [name]Wilder[/name], [name]Leo[/name] and perhaps [name]Ramsey[/name] would work well. [[name]Leo[/name] might be a stretch for the lion connection, and I ruled out [name]Grey[/name] because of the obvious ‘grey fox’ problem and [name]Lennox[/name] because of the matching -x).

From Dresdendoll’s list, I think [name]Kerr[/name], [name]Everest[/name], [name]Frost[/name], and [name]Laird[/name] would pair well with [name]Fox[/name].

Did you like [name]Drake[/name]? It’s a surname, but it also means ‘dragon’ and is the name of a male duck. It can stand up to [name]Fox[/name] without being cartoonish.

I actually really liked the sound of [name]Lachlan[/name] and Broden together!

[name]Fox[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] is great though. I love the idea of [name]Drake[/name] or [name]Wilder[/name] though.

[name]Drake[/name] [name]Robert[/name] & [name]Fox[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]?

Other ideas…
[name]Fox[/name] & [name]Bennett[/name]
[name]Fox[/name] & [name]Reed[/name]
[name]Fox[/name] & [name]Hawk[/name]
[name]Fox[/name] & [name]Pierce[/name]
[name]Fox[/name] & [name]Linden[/name]
[name]Fox[/name] & [name]Evander[/name]
[name]Fox[/name] & [name]Gage[/name]
[name]Fox[/name] & [name]Clyde[/name]
[name]Fox[/name] & [name]Atlas[/name]

[name]Felix[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]
[name]Lennox[/name] [name]Robert[/name]

(nn’s [name]Fox[/name] & [name]Knox[/name])

of [name]Lincoln[/name] [name]Robert[/name] ([name]Fox[/name] and Linx)
