I’ve been spinning my wheels on this one, so I’d love your thoughts.
We have two children:
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] (surname Wordelman), nn [name_u]Theo[/name_u], with mn [name_u]James[/name_u] as a tribute to his dad
[name_f]Adele[/name_f] [name_f]Johanna[/name_f] (Wordelman), nn [name_f]Della[/name_f] or [name_f]Della[/name_f] [name_u]Jo[/name_u], with mn [name_f]Johanna[/name_f] as a tribute to dad’s great-grandma
Sounds like it’s my turn for a tribute, huh?
For the little girl, I’m torn between…
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_f]Emma[/name_f], nn [name_u]Romy[/name_u]. [name_u]Romy[/name_u] is traditionally a [name_m]German[/name_m] nickname for [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], but my [name_f]MIL[/name_f] hates [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]. I adore [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], and I think [name_u]Romy[/name_u] still works given the mn here. [name_f]Emma[/name_f] is my great-grandmother, so I’d love to have that symmetry with her big sis.
- and-
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] or [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] - just love this name, love the poem, and the nn possibilities are endless. My name is [name_f]Angela[/name_f]/[name_u]Angie[/name_u], so it’s kind of a way of passing that on too. But the mn here is not too special, and I’m worried that it’s too much of a mouthful with our surname. I’d probably call her [name_f]Evie[/name_f], maybe [name_f]Evie[/name_f] + middle name.
~
For the wee boy, I’m just stuck. I’d like to use the middle name [name_m]Eric[/name_m], not because I particularly like the name (I don’t, not for its own sake), but because we’ve known several really important, special people named [name_m]Eric[/name_m]. I love that we could honor them all at once with this mn.
You’ve probably guessed by now that I really like old fashioned names with sweet, short nicknames. But I do want them to stand out a little. We’ve considered:
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_m]Eric[/name_m]
[name_m]Brendan[/name_m] [name_m]Eric[/name_m]
[name_m]Liam[/name_m] [name_m]Eric[/name_m]
and discarded them all, more or less because they are too popular, though I like the sounds and the simplicity. I also really like the boy name [name_m]Jack[/name_m], but it doesn’t seem to fit here.
Becoming more desperate, I ventured:
[name_m]Lucien[/name_m] [name_m]Eric[/name_m] (nn [name_m]Luke[/name_m]) – people say this strikes them as a bit evil-sounding, though.
[name_m]Bastian[/name_m] [name_m]Eric[/name_m] – from Sebasatian, which I don’t like, but I do like [name_m]Bastian[/name_m]. Problem is that it sounds kind of too much like Bastard for me.
[name_u]Malin[/name_u] [name_m]Eric[/name_m], nn [name_u]Mal[/name_u] – too unusual, I’m afraid…
Then I thought about [name_m]Bram[/name_m] [name_m]Eric[/name_m], or [name_m]Bramwell[/name_m]… but I started worrying it was too strange. I have nothing against unusual names at all, but my preference is to stay more or less within the established-name territory for our kidlets.
And finally, I like [name_u]Remy[/name_u] [name_m]Eric[/name_m], but obviously we can’t do that if we choose [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]/[name_u]Romy[/name_u] for the sister. I’m also unsure about how it’d feel to people (too girly? too odd?).
What is your favorite of these choices? What pair would you choose? Any new suggestions?
Our family background is mostly Dutch and [name_m]German[/name_m], with some Scottish thrown in as well. I also really love [name_m]French[/name_m] names, though. I also like subtle nature-inspired names, as I’m a closet hippie.
Thanks so much for your help!!
