Twins- vintage suggestions needed!

My husband and I are expecting twins. We have [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] and [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Maude[/name_f] picked out, but don’t know what to do if we have two boys or two girls. Help!

  1. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think our boy and girl name go well together for a twin set?

  2. What other suggestions do you have? These are some of my ideas, but my husband isn’t necessarily too keen!

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Nigel[/name_m] (husband’s fav, but I’m nervous that it isn’t an old-fashioned name)
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_u]Lionel[/name_u]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Alec[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Miles[/name_m]

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] (my fav, husband feels it’s a mouthful. My sister is [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] so not an option)
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] (same as above, too long for husband)
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] (love, but friend named their daughter this)

Right now, if we have two girls, I feel like they both need to have long names. Thoughts? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think we can get away with one long name and one short?

Thanks for all your help! Can’t wait to hear your suggestions!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] is dashing. I don’t think that [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Maude[/name_f] doesn’t go with [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]. However, I do really think that [name_f]Maude[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] is much better. I personally just like [name_f]Maude[/name_f] way more, but [name_f]Maude[/name_f] & [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] are so so cute together. [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] is just a mouthful. [name_f]Maude[/name_f] is smart, homey & a little quirky just like [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]. But alas, if you like [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], go for it. It’s not a bad name.

Here are my thoughts on two boys:

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Nigel[/name_m] (husband’s fav, but I’m nervous that it isn’t an old-fashioned name)-[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] & [name_m]Nigel[/name_m] are adorable! I’m not sure that it’s vintage, but it does have an old fashioned feeling to me. [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] & [name_m]Nigel[/name_m] are like two posh old English men. Which sounds weird, but is charming & unique.

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_u]Lionel[/name_u]-I think that these go really well too, but I don’t love [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] as much. I love geeky boy names, but this one is just too geeky for me. I love [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] & [name_m]Linus[/name_m], however.

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]-Another very geeky choice, but it’s also very fun & different. I like it a lot. And it has a lot of great nn options like [name_m]Gil[/name_m], [name_m]Gilby[/name_m], [name_m]Gib[/name_m], [name_m]Gibby[/name_m] or [name_u]Bertie[/name_u].

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Alec[/name_m]-I like [name_m]Alec[/name_m] a lot, but it’s not as interesting as some of the others.

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]-This is really nice. [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] & handsome, old fashioned, simple yet not over done, strong & gentle all at the same time. Similar vibes to [name_m]Hugh[/name_m].

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Miles[/name_m]-Meh, this is my least favorite from your list. It is an old fashioned name, but it’s trendy in 2020 at the same time.

A few more boy ideas that go w/[name_m]Hugh[/name_m]:

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]

[name_u]Alden[/name_u]

[name_m]Basil[/name_m]

Bernrad

[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]

[name_m]Chet[/name_m]

[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]

[name_u]Ellis[/name_u]-kind of like [name_m]Miles[/name_m] a little bit though, but I think it’s handsome.

[name_m]Edgar[/name_m]

[name_m]Frederic[/name_m]

[name_m]George[/name_m]

[name_u]Ira[/name_u]

[name_m]Lloyd[/name_m]

[name_m]Linus[/name_m]!

[name_m]Niles[/name_m]

[name_m]Simon[/name_m]

Here are my thoughts on the girls:

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] (my fav, husband feels it’s a mouthful. [name_f]Sister[/name_f] is [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] so not an option)-[name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] is a mouthful & trick to spell, but for what it’s worth I think that these go really well for sisters. Neither is my style, but they’re not bad & kind of different. Are you into nick-names? I do like [name_f]Evie[/name_f] & [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] a lot.

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] (same as above, too long for husband)-Ooh, I like [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]. It’s unique & classy.

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]-Pretty name, but kind of getting popular. [name_m]Just[/name_m] [name_f]Addie[/name_f] names in general. [name_m]Hence[/name_m] why you have a friend with one.

A few girl suggestions to go w/[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]: (I don’t think that they both have to have long names. I think picking two names that you love & don’t totally clash with each other is what you should focus on.)

[name_f]Adela[/name_f]

[name_f]Adele[/name_f]

[name_f]Amelie[/name_f]

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]

[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]

[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]

[name_f]Georgina[/name_f]

[name_f]Gloria[/name_f]

[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]

[name_f]Josephina[/name_f]

[name_f]Luciana[/name_f]

[name_f]Scarlet[/name_f]

[name_f]Theodora[/name_f]

[name_f]Virginia[/name_f]

[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.

Thanks- your thoughts and suggestions were definitely helpful!

I agree, [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_f]Maude[/name_f] do sound great together. I hadn’t thought of that! I just refrain from using [name_f]Maude[/name_f] as a first name because we have a daughter named [name_f]Florence[/name_f]. I was nervous to mention this earlier in case someone, somehow figured out who I am! Oh well! I think of [name_f]Florence[/name_f] (nn.[name_f]Flora[/name_f]) as being very elegant and I’d like an equally elegant name for a second daughter.

Funny that you added [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] as an option. I think it sounds amazing with [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] too and have even said so to my husband! I just don’t think I have the guts to pick such a different name.

I like [name_m]Linus[/name_m] better than [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] too. Sounds a bit hipper! And I love [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], glad you do too! I especially like the nn [name_m]Gil[/name_m]. If only I could talk my husband into it- maybe, just maybe!

Thanks so much, it’s good to even hear confirmation!

I think [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] work perfectly fine together (and with [name_f]Florence[/name_f])! They all three have that elegant, old-fashioned edge.

Of the boy options, I love [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]! It would pair so nicely with [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]. [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] and [name_m]Linus[/name_m] are also great matches.

For a girl, I agree that [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] are a little too much with [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]. ([name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] would probably have been my first suggestion, but I see that it’s off the table.)

  • I think [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] would be a great twin name for [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], if you don’t mind a shared initial and the fact that [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] has become quite popular lately.
  • Perhaps you’d like [name_f]Millicent[/name_f]? It has that same romantic, vintage vibe as [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f].
  • [name_u]Love[/name_u] the previous suggestion of [name_f]Adele[/name_f]!
  • [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], too, would be a great fit.
  • [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] also come to mind…

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this could help a little!

I think [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] and [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Maude[/name_f] go well together, although I would personally much prefer [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m]. [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] has a more vintage feel to it in my opinion and has a lot more spunk and sophistication. That’s just a personal thing though - there’s nothing wrong with [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]!

In regards to female twins, I don’t at all think the other name has to be a long one. Of your options my favourite is [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] but considering you probably can’t use it, how about [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]? I actually prefer [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] and think it’s beautiful with [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]! Some other ideas, short and long, to go with [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]:

[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f]
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Mirabel[/name_f]
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]
[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Primrose[/name_f]
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]

With [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m], I like [name_m]Miles[/name_m] or [name_m]Edwin[/name_m]. They’re lovely vintage names. I can’t say [name_m]Nigel[/name_m] feels vintage to me - more baby boomer perhaps. Some other ideas:

[name_m]Angus[/name_m]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Otis[/name_m]
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
[name_m]Errol[/name_m]
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]

[name_m]Casper[/name_m]
[name_m]Archibald[/name_m]
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_m]Atticus[/name_m]
[name_u]Francis[/name_u]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_m]Louis[/name_m]

[name_m]Chester[/name_m]
[name_m]Monty[/name_m]
[name_m]Leopold[/name_m]

[name_m]Orson[/name_m]
[name_u]Rory[/name_u]
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]

[name_m]Franklin[/name_m]
[name_m]Wilfred[/name_m]
[name_m]Langston[/name_m]
[name_m]Albert[/name_m]

Good luck!

[name_u]Lionel[/name_u], [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], [name_m]Miles[/name_m] are my favorite from your boys list. I think [name_m]Linus[/name_m] would be great as well. Perhaps [name_m]Just[/name_m] [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]?)

Thanks for all your thoughts and suggestions- please keep them coming! They’re very helpful!

[name_f]Glad[/name_f] to see a second person say they like [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]. I think this is my favorite combination- [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]! My husband hasn’t completely closed the door on this name, so maybe there is still hope of swaying him!

You’ve all mentioned some girl names I love and have even considered. [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] (nn. [name_f]Bea[/name_f]) seems to stand out for me though. Initially, I feared this was too popular but I just looked up the meaning and love it! [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] means, “she who brings happiness; blessed.”

Another question, what nickname would you use for [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]? I prefer “[name_f]Eva[/name_f]” but find this too popular where we live. It’s often used on it’s own or as a nickname for [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u].

Thanks again, much appreciated!

I know it’s not much different than ‘[name_f]Eva[/name_f]’, but I think ‘[name_f]Evie[/name_f]’ is an adorable nn option for [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]! [name_f]Lina[/name_f] could also work…

Hugh Charles and Evangeline Maude are great, and I like Edwin, Marguerite, and Georgiana from your list (same length as Evangeline, husband!).

Hugh Charles &
Albert
Bernard
Desmond
Edgar
Everett
Phillip
Wallace

Evangeline Maude (cute combo btw) &
Alma Adelaide
Annabel Rae
Eloise Pearl
Felicity Jean (my fave if you can deal with two Fs)
Hazel Marguerite
Isadora Blythe
Leonora Frances
Ophelia Esther
Rosalie Nell

I love [name_f]Evy[/name_f] (eh-vee) as a nickname for [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]. [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] would be fantastic!

[name_f]Theodora[/name_f] was my first thought (nn. [name_f]Thea[/name_f])
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] ([name_f]Vivi[/name_f])
[name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] ([name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f])
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] (a bit more elaborate, but I love it with [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f]!)

I love [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Alec[/name_m]! Other ideas:

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Alethea[/name_f]
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Adeliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Calpurnia[/name_f]
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Colin[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Aaron[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Edward[/name_m] (prefer this to [name_m]Edwin[/name_m])
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_u]Owen[/name_u]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Casper[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] and [name_u]Brett[/name_u]

Your selected names go well together, although I really only like [name_m]Charles[/name_m]. I definitely like [name_m]Miles[/name_m] and [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] (or [name_m]Edmund[/name_m]???) [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] is pretty, but I wouldn’t use it because of friend’s daughter. Maybe [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]?

[name_m]Lewis[/name_m] [name_m]William[/name_m]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m]
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]

[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Adeline[/name_f] [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] & [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] together! Especially with big sister [name_f]Florence[/name_f]!

I actually think [name_m]Nigel[/name_m] goes really well, and feels vintage to me. I also like the ideas of [name_m]Linus[/name_m] and [name_u]Percy[/name_u]!
[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] is adorable, I absolutely love that name!!!

Ideas:
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]** ([name_f]Minnie[/name_f])
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]
[name_f]Constance[/name_f] (might be too close to [name_f]Florence[/name_f]?)
[name_f]Bernadette[/name_f]**
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
[name_f]Anneliese[/name_f]
[name_f]Delphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]
[name_f]Prudence[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Avalon[/name_f]
[name_f]Gardenia[/name_f]

Congratulations!

I think [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] & [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Maude[/name_f] is a lovely twin set choice really classic.

Moving onto all boy twins…
