Twyla or Twila? Poll

Recently ran into a name I like (so rare) but never know what to do with the spellings. My name is more commonly spelled with an —en not —in at the end and I never really minded correcting people because I liked the way it looked better. So I struggle with the same issue with other names.

I believe both are pronounced Twhy-Luh. Twila has been around since pre-1900 where as Twyla picked about sometime in the 30’s.

I like the look of Twila more but find that Twyla is more intuitive for pronouncing it. What do you think? Neither spellings have been very popular over the years with Twila maxing out at 400-500ish in 1930’s and Twyla around 750 in the 1960’s.

For reference my top names:

Girls:
Sibyl
Maren/Marnie
Linnea

Boys:

Robin

So which spelling do you think fits best/ is their a hot take on one being the correct version? Would love opinions

I prefer the looks of [name_f]Twyla[/name_f] and think is goes better with your other names. [name_f]Twila[/name_f] is good too, though.

Thank you!! I don’t know why but I’m just not a huge fan of names with y as the only vowel I don’t know what the reason is because that’s exactly where/when a y would be a vowel lol. The struggle continues!

I love all of those names! I prefer [name_f]Twila[/name_f] over [name_f]Twyla[/name_f] but I think both are perfectly good choices

I prefer [name_f]Twyla[/name_f] personally. Without seeing [name_f]Twyla[/name_f] in the post as well, that pronunciation would not have been obvious with [name_f]Twila[/name_f].

[name_f]Twila[/name_f] looks like the correct spelling to me. Are you thinking people might say Twill-uh instead of Twy-luh? In [name_f]English[/name_f] at least, you’d expect a long vowel sound unless your vowel is followed by a double L. Think [name_f]Isla[/name_f] vs [name_f]Willa[/name_f]. I wouldn’t think it would be a pronunciation challenge for most people.

Yes!! So I feel the same way that if it were spelled [name_f]Twilla[/name_f] it would be like [name_f]Willa[/name_f] with a T. But my brain first goes there when I see [name_f]Twila[/name_f] vs [name_f]Twyla[/name_f]. But I agree that I like the spelling of [name_f]Twila[/name_f] more.

I’m absolutely no help as I completely adore this name with either spelling :joy: just wanted to share my love and adoration for Twila/Twyla

[name_f]Twyla[/name_f] Tharp so that’s how I spell it.

I like [name_f]Twyla[/name_f]! It feels like it matches with your names and is more intuitive in pronunciation

Since you’ve gone with [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], visually [name_f]Twila[/name_f] goes better with your other names in my opinion. The repeated i in [name_f]Linnea[/name_f] and [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] adds to that too. I like both spellings pretty equally, though!

I agree with this completely. The “y” in the name sort of makes it seem a bit made up. For example I prefer [name_f]Leila[/name_f] or [name_f]Laila[/name_f] over [name_f]Layla[/name_f]. I voted for [name_f]Twila[/name_f] for this reason. I think both spellings have intuitive pronunciation and [name_f]Twila[/name_f] just looks better to me.

I went with [name_f]Twyla[/name_f]. [name_f]Twila[/name_f] looks cleaner but it makes me want to say twill-a

Yes me too but only at first glance. Once my brain realizes there’s only 1 L I say it correctly
