To all the UK Nameberries -
I’ve been wondering for a while why we don’t get statistics like the US do on baby names. The last official list was in 2011 (which can be found here). I want to see more updated lists!
Does anyone else feel my pain?

We do get them. It used to be every ten years, but it’s been annual since the mid 90’s. The statistics are revealed in the [name]Summer[/name] ([name]August[/name] I believe). So you’ve just got to wait patiently for the list of awesomeness.
@ottilie - Thank you! Whereabouts are they published?
[name]EDIT[/name]: I spent so long typing that, Otter got there before me
It will be published here. You can find some older sheets as well.
C&P: I agree, ours rock! I love it, so much fun and easy to navigate through
@charlieandperry1 I just meant that we didn’t get a 2012 one, but now I know it will be published around [name]August[/name] time! I’m not complaining about the actual statistics we get, I like them too
@ottilie Thank you!
the us doesn’t get their 2012 one until next week
mclola , we got our top 10 today.
just saw that, thought we would have to wait until [name]Monday[/name].
As others have said, you do get them, they should be out in [name]August[/name].
When they first started to be released annually, they came out in [name]January[/name], but a few years ago that changed. The first year it changed they didn’t come out until the [name]October[/name], the reason it was so late in the year, is that the original plan was to STOP producing the lists at all. However this caused a bit of uproar, so the Office of National Statistics (ONS) relented and agreed to produce the lists, but stressed they’d be later in the year.
The next year they were projected for early [name]September[/name], but they surprised everyone by getting them out in [name]August[/name], and hope to get them out in [name]August[/name] again this year. [name]August[/name] does still seem rather late in the year, but lets face it, it’s better than [name]October[/name]!
NB: The reason how I know about how the ONS backtracked after the uproar, is I have an “insider”, as my aunt works as a statisician for the main ONS office in [name]Newport[/name] ([name]Wales[/name]). She doesn’t work on the names, but she does work on family/population stats (the area names fall under), and she remembers the complaints filing in!
They wanted to stop producing the lists?! I can’t understand why, it’s of relevence and interest to a lot of pregnant people and new parents, as well as name obsessives. I’m just glad they’re not every ten years like they used to be, but it still narks me that I can’t find an exact list for the year I was born.
essjay - The plan was to revert to doing them every 10 years again, not stop them all together, should have been clearer there. However, having had many years of the lists being produced annually, people weren’t ready to accept that and rightly so!
