Ultimate Boys' Name--Poll!

@jonquil’s Ultimate Boy Name thread made me realize—I really don’t have one! I posted my long list here recently, and your feedback was so helpful in narrowing it down to a short list. Now, if you’re up for it, I’d love for you to sell me on one or two of these remaining names–or, suggest the one name you really think I should consider instead!

A little context: I would most likely use [name_u]Kai[/name_u] (an honor name) in the middle spot; [name_u]Cove[/name_u] is another possibility. A great meaning or history is important to me, and I’d ideally love something either vintage or relatively timeless (I’m flexible on that, though!). It would be great if the name weren’t extremely popular, but that’s not a top concern. Any name that starts with a “t” or ends in an “n” sound is pretty much out. And I still have a soft spot for [name_m]Linus[/name_m], but it almost rhymes with my ultimate girl name, so it’s off the table for now. Without further ado, here’s my current short list:

Beckett! I love [name_u]Beckett[/name_u]. [name_u]Beckett[/name_u] [name_u]Cove[/name_u] would be stunning. I wish I could use it myself but alas, reasons. [name_u]Beckett[/name_u] is handsome and strong, and [name_u]Cove[/name_u] is soft and reminds me of the ocean, creating a perfect balance.

Well, my top two boys names are [name_u]August[/name_u] and [name_m]Wesley[/name_m], so I just had to choose them! I also love [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_u]Jasper[/name_u]!

I love [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], but it doesn’t really work very well with [name_u]Kai[/name_u] or [name_u]Cove[/name_u]. So I voted for [name_u]Jasper[/name_u], my other favorite of your list!

I voted for [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] because I adore them, but I think [name_m]Felix[/name_m] goes the best with middles [name_u]Kai[/name_u] or [name_u]Cove[/name_u]. [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] and [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] also sound great with [name_u]Kai[/name_u] and [name_u]Cove[/name_u].

I’ve fallen in love with the name [name_u]Gus[/name_u] because I follow an actor, [name_m]Jeffrey[/name_m] [name_u]Dean[/name_u] [name_u]Morgan[/name_u], and his son is named [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] and goes by [name_u]Gus[/name_u]. The name has really grown on me!!

I voted for Felix and August.

Felix would be my top pick – it’s quirky but traditional, sweet for a little one and handsome for an adult, and has a really cool, distinctive sound and one of the best meanings around! (If you’re into meanings, Isaac has a lovely one too).

August is handsome and dignified, but not too heavy or too fusty. It’s got great nickname potential ([name_m]Auggie[/name_m] being my fave, but [name_u]Gus[/name_u] or even [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m] are good options too). Like [name_m]Felix[/name_m], it’s a well known and long established name, but not too common.

I also love Leo from your list, and I’ve definitely described it as “the ultimate boy name” in the past. It’s got such a bright, energetic sound, it’s super simple but still feels substantial and complete, it’s very international, and like [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and [name_u]August[/name_u] it’s got a great meaning and suits any age or personality. The only reason I didn’t vote for it is because it’s quite a bit more popular than the rest of your names, which makes me think you might prefer something more underused.

Others I really like: Oscar, Hugo, Jasper. All very dapper, with that cool traditional vibe you seem to really like.

Felix [name_u]Kai[/name_u] is such a wonderful name. It sounds buoyant and dapper, is simultaneously modern and timeless, has a great phonic balance as well as cadence. Plus, I mean, it’s [name_m]Felix[/name_m]!

@elanorelle I can see what you mean about the flow of [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] with [name_u]Kai[/name_u]/Cove–maybe something about the hard g sound followed by a k sound, plus the repeated long o’s in the case of [name_u]Cove[/name_u]? Anyway, [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] has definitely been rising to the top!

@Elle1 [name_u]August[/name_u] has been a longtime favorite of mine, and I agree with you that [name_u]Gus[/name_u] has totally grown on me!

@katinka Ooh, this is a pretty good sell for [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] has actually been on my list in the past–such a wonderful meaning!–in the end it just didn’t feel quite me. As of right now, the poll is putting [name_u]August[/name_u] in the clear winning spot. And oh, do I love [name_u]August[/name_u]. [name_f]My[/name_f] only hesitation is that I don’t love the way it sounds with my ultimate girl name–[name_f]Iris[/name_f]–which I feel a bit more sure about.

I’d say the biggest outcome of this so far has been a growing love for [name_u]Jasper[/name_u]. I’ve always liked it, and more so recently, but it seems to just keep moving up! I love the meaning, the nature connection (even though I know the name and word have separate origins), the soft-yet-bold sounds, and the bright, strong feeling I get from it.

I’d say [name_u]Jasper[/name_u], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_u]Beckett[/name_u], and [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] are probably my top contenders right now, with an edge to the first two. I still love [name_u]Bennett[/name_u], [name_m]Leo[/name_m], and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], but I’m not sure they’re the right candidates for my ultimate name. In that way, it seems like the poll may have just confirmed what I didn’t quite consciously realize yet! [name_u]August[/name_u] will always be a top favorite, but I do think [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is ruling him out of the “ultimate” spot for now.
