Uncommon but not unusual names starting with a

Does somebody know uncommon but not unusual names for boys that start with an A? I really like [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] but I don’t like the fact that it’s original a female name (and still is female only in some countries). I’m not exactly against unisex names but I only want to use names for the gender they’ve originally been for.

No, [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] IS in fact the masculine version of the name.

Same as Demitris (also a Greek goddess name and both used by me), [name_m]Lukas[/name_m], [name_m]Nikos[/name_m], [name_m]Marios[/name_m], etc, etc. Feminine would be [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f], [name_f]Demetria[/name_f], etc, etc… If you want to be pedantic about it naming a girl [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] would not be in keeping with Greek tradition.

That all said, am not sure I would use [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] as a first name for a boy, and I don’t get the impression it is used as such in Greece in recent times- unlike versions of [name_u]Demeter[/name_u], arguably a more feminine goddess- which is also used very extensively in Eastern Europe.

Thanks I didn’t know that.I’ve googled the name and read some of the comments one of them was saying that [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] is still female only in Greece.

The ending is masculine. In [name_m]Cyprus[/name_m] I knew Artemisias (plural), am doubtful that [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] is used for a girl with that ending in Greece though I have little experience of that, it could be a modern thing. As far as I am aware all traditional male Greek names end in S (which is dropped when speaking directly to the person) and no female ones do.
