Looking for a name for [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]’s sibling, I’m attracted to names that are widely known but seldom used. Other major criteria is that the name be easy to pronounce in English, [name_m]French[/name_m] and Spanish.
When Balt(h)azar came up I didn’t expect to like it, but it stuck in my head and it’s growing on me. We would skip the “h” because we like to keep the most Spanish-friendly spelling for names to match the kid(s)’ Spanish last name, and also to avoid major variations in the pronunciation.
Basically my question is: what would you think if you met someone named Baltazar? What kind of style does it have in your eyes? All opinions welcome.
I think it fits quite well with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and, while I personally wouldn’t use it, I would think it was awesome if I met someone named that.
\o/ \o/ \o/ I AM SO SURPRISED - I L.O.V.E. the name Baltazar, but few people mention the existence of this name. The sound is perfect - strong, mysterious and unusual without being completely weird; it fits any age and any career path. I also prefer without the H (kinda unnecessary if you ask me). The only thing it lacks is a good and intuitive nickname (my favorite is [name_u]Barry[/name_u], second is [name_m]Baz[/name_m]), but with a little [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], I doubt that it’s a problem for your family. I super recommend this name!!! <3
Good Luck!
I absolutely love the name… I think the zar makes me associate with czar or tsar. Also it’s a biblical king. So, I imagine a eastern ruler or political figure. Although it’s a fun name, it also a serious name.
Oh I didn’t expect such positive feedback hihi how nice!
@pindorama Now that you mention nicknames - it’s true that we don’t have a nickname for [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and it doesn’t bother us, but Baltazar being 3 syllables long I feel it will get shortened whether we like it or not, so we’d have to choose a nickname before people choose one for us! I like [name_m]Baz[/name_m], maybe Taz which is a bit peculiar, but also kinda cool. My husband automatically said Balti which sounds cute in Spanish, but otherwise not so much. Hmm something to think about.
@themadishradish I agree with you about Baltazar being “fun but also serious”. I like that a lot. Quirky, but with some weight to it, a history that anchors it. I feel the same way about [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], actually.
Baltazar does go well with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. However, it has a bit of a dark connotation for me because Baltazar was the king who saw the literal “writing on the wall” and then watched his kingdom fall. There’s also legends of him practicing “black” magic and summoning demons, although not sure whether that’s true. I do remember however reading and analyzing a famous poem about the king Baltazar / Belsazar in high school, which was very apocalyptic…
Sorry to be negative, I’m not a fan!
The name [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m] is one I’ve heard a lot of people make fun of, calling it a typical villain name, both on TV and real life. Whenever I hear it I picture someone evil, who wears black and practices dark magic or whatever. On a more positive note I think it works with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and I like the nicknames.
It’s true that it has dark, evil connotations. I thought to myself earlier that a [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m], in HP, would definitely have been a Slytherin student! It doesn’t bother me much, I think because when I see a name worn, it tends to make those references fade away in my mind. That being said I understand that evil character associations could very well put some people off a name. Thank you!
So I love the [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m], and while that’s my preferred variation, Baltazar not only makes sense for your family and is still very handsome, but it’s also great with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]!
