[name_f]My[/name_f] mom has a coworker named [name_f]Marissa[/name_f] and I just recently was at my mom’s work and they call her Sisca or Sissa. I thought it was so cute!!! I mean, she is a grown woman with a baby, but i love the idea of calling someone Sisca or Sissa for [name_f]Marissa[/name_f], and I’d never heard it before.
I have a friend named [name_f]Viktoria[/name_f] who goes by [name_f]Vika[/name_f], which I had never heard before meeting her.
What are some nicknames you’d never heard someone be called before for a name?
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]: [name_u]Maj[/name_u] (like [name_u]Taj[/name_u] with an ‘m’. Not quite [name_f]Marge[/name_f], not quite [name_f]Madge[/name_f]. I like it, it really suits her.)
[name_f]Tayla[/name_f]: [name_f]Aya[/name_f] (a nickname I came up with for a friend in primary school, because there were so many [name_f]Tayla[/name_f]'s / [name_u]Taylor[/name_u]'s / Taylah’s / [name_u]Tailor[/name_u]'s in our year and everyone just wound up confused.). Like [name_f]Leia[/name_f] with no ‘l’, rather than rhyming with [name_f]Maya[/name_f]. It stuck though, and everyone calls her that now.
[name_f]Cara[/name_f]: [name_u]Ari[/name_u] (I’ve met [name_u]Ari[/name_u]'s before, but never as a nn for [name_f]Cara[/name_f])
[name_f]Chana[/name_f] for [name_f]Adriana[/name_f]
Momo or [name_u]Mo[/name_u] for [name_u]Simone[/name_u]
[name_f]Leia[/name_f] for [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
Hez for [name_m]Hezekiah[/name_m]
T-dot for [name_f]Tricia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sasa[/name_f] for [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Cece[/name_f] for [name_f]Cecelia[/name_f]
Susu for [name_f]Susan[/name_f]
Meeca for [name_f]Micaela[/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] name ([name_f]Julia[/name_f]) is so annoyingly common that I make up nicknames to go by instead. [name_u]Jojo[/name_u], Juju, [name_f]Lia[/name_f], etc.
I have some more!
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]- [name_f]Ila[/name_f], [name_m]Elian[/name_m], Eia, Lulio, Luli, [name_f]Lula[/name_f]
[name_f]Elin[/name_f]-[name_f]Louise[/name_f]: [name_f]Elaine[/name_f], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Lin[/name_f]-lou, [name_f]Eliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f]: [name_u]Bird[/name_u], [name_u]Jet[/name_u], [name_f]Brid[/name_f], Get
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]: [name_f]Oliva[/name_f], [name_f]Alivia[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f] (these come from the fact that in our school’s official documents someone spelled her name wrong in like three different ways)
[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]- [name_f]Santa[/name_f]
When we’re out people always stop us and ask what “[name_f]Leni[/name_f]” is short for. They’re always a bit shocked when we say [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], most go by [name_f]Maddy[/name_f]/[name_f]Maddie[/name_f].
Yelly for [name_f]Danielle[/name_f]. I’ve actually known 2.
[name_f]Amy[/name_f] and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I just assumed [name_f]Amy[/name_f] was [name_f]Amy[/name_f] and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] was [name_f]Molly[/name_f] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f].
Icky. He wouldn’t say what it was short for other than that it’s Aztec. I like to think it’s Ichtaca because that’s Nahuatl for “secret!”
It’s not unexpected but one of the Francesca’s I know goes by Cheska which I love (compared to the more common Frankie/Frannie/Fran). I call my cousin Jocelyn goes mostly by Jojo but I call her ‘‘Jojie’’ or ‘‘Jodge’’ a lot, it just fits.
I love Yelly for Danielle too
But in all honesty I find overstretched nicknames super cringey. Like… Scarlett nn Scout, Olivia nn Ivy, Penelope nn Pippa… blech. They’re all lovely names but for crying out loud, pick one or the other.
