Unexpected Popular Names in Your Area

Hi Berries.

The title says it all. This post is inspired by the fact that I hear yet another Betty today! Went to the trampoline park, & a little girl was called Betty. Maybe nine or ten years old. Plus, I have three acquaintances with daughters (all roughly five years old) called Betty. How are there so many Bettys?! It’s not even in the top 1,000 in the U.S. I live in a big city in the Midwest.

The other names that I hear quite a lot in my area that aren’t very high on the SSA list are…

Girls-

Alice-at #76, but I hear it way more often than that.

Cecilia/Cece

Juniper

Mabel

Margot

Boys-

Everett

Looking forward to hearing your’s.

[name_f]Ada[/name_f] (#28 but feels like a top 5 name)
[name_m]Doruk[/name_m] (#43 but overdone)
[name_f]Serra[/name_f] (doesn’t rank but I know a few young ones)
[name_f]Liya[/name_f] (doesn’t rank either)
Balım (doesn’t rank, weird word name but somehow?? People around me like it??)

For reference, I live in [name_u]New[/name_u] [name_u]Zealand[/name_u]. I’d love to hear if @minxtruck who lives in another area of [name_u]New[/name_u] [name_u]Zealand[/name_u] has had similar experiences with these names, or if these are just names I encounter a lot in my town. For @minxtruck to see, I live in the town starting with Ch-

[name_f]Danielle[/name_f] (doesn’t rank)
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] (ranks 14, but feels like a top 5 name)
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] (ranks 9, but feels like the top name)
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] (ranks 18, but feels like a top 5 name)
[name_f]Caitlin[/name_f] (doesn’t rank)
[name_f]Neve[/name_f] (doesn’t rank)
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] (ranks 80, but feels like a top 20 name)

[name_u]Jayden[/name_u] (ranks 70)
[name_u]Jamie[/name_u] (doesn’t rank)
[name_u]Devon[/name_u] (doesn’t rank)
[name_m]Caleb[/name_m] (doesn’t rank)

I think I live in the same NZ town as you starting with Ch judging by some of the names on your list.

I’d add-
Freddie
Ella (#10)
Jayden/Brayden/Kaden etc (kids a bit older. I’m a secondary school teacher and all my classes are littered with these names!)
Sophia (#28)
Variations of Finn, Finley (Finn #25)
Aroha
Mila (#13)

Ooh yes, totally agree with all the ones you just added. Funny, we definitely live in the same town then. So many Ellas! [name_m]Even[/name_m] my real name has [name_f]Ella[/name_f] in it.

[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is a big one here (Australia). It’s ranked around 17 I think but it feels like a top 5 name. I must know at least 7 or 8 Oscars from newborn age to about 10 (and then some more older ones, teenagers and adults). [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] is another; it’s ranked 34 but I hear it all the time and have taught so many.

For girls, [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] is one I hear quite a lot (not anywhere near as much as [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] but considering I don’t think it’s even in the top 100 here I’m surprised by how many times I have heard it). Two big ones that come to mind as well are [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] - they’re ranked 58 and 50 respectively but they feel much more popular than that based on my experience as a mother who spends time at playgrounds and has a child in daycare.

Kaiya (this spelling - encountered three in the same year group at work - #778 -Kaia is #503)
Honey (I’ve met four! - #465)
Aoife (can’t remember how many I’ve met but at least five or six - #289)
Tallulah (I’ve encountered four - #260)
Stanley (I’ve encountered four or five - #72)
Brody (I’ve met three - #116)

(Southern [name_u]Texas[/name_u], US) [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m], [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] and [name_f]Mila[/name_f] are really big ones, I hear those all the time. There’s also a ton of José’s and Luna’s

Could [name_f]Betty[/name_f] be a nickname? Anyways [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] is quite popular in my brothers’ elementary school, about as common as [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. It’s weird though, because I’ve met 3 Elyse’s and no Sophia’s.

Hello! Hmm that’s a tricky one… we live somewhere that’s not home to either of us and we don’t have many friends here, especially friends with children. So, I don’t think I have a very good gauge on what’s popular here in Auckland specifically.

We do have friends & family with children in [name_m]Wellington[/name_m] and Tauranga though, and the names that stand out to me as popular are things like…

[name_u]Eden[/name_u] - #56
[name_f]Evie[/name_f] - #35
[name_u]Indy[/name_u] - #48
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] - #1
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] - #22
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] - #8
[name_u]Riley[/name_u] - #30

[name_m]Archie[/name_m] - #21
[name_u]Arthur[/name_u] - #31
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] - #5
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] - #14
[name_u]Riley[/name_u] - #53

So, mostly top 50 names anyway, or pretty close to!

To be honest, we have baby names like [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f], [name_m]Cillian[/name_m], [name_m]Rafael[/name_m], [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] and [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] in our wider network, so clearly our circles are not “popular baby name”ers!

Btw… I think some of your names do rank in the NZ top 100 maybe? E.g. [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] is #42, [name_u]Jayden[/name_u] is #70 (haven’t checked all the others, so maybe just those two!)

I’m in [name_u]East[/name_u] [name_f]England[/name_f] for reference.

[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] (my son’s name, I hear it loads now! Either [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] or Ruben)
[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]
Names hyphenated with -Beau

[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Erin[/name_f]

Oh, that’s so strange that my edit was undone! I edited to add [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] & Jayden’s ranking once I confirmed them but Nameberry must have undone it. Urgh! I hate it when it does that.

Really interesting to see - I’ve never met an [name_u]Indy[/name_u] or an [name_u]Arthur[/name_u]!

Argh, I hate it when that happens!

Yeah, it’s funny… I’ve met one Indie/Indy and know of one other, and two friends (different circles) have recently had babies and called them [name_u]Arthur[/name_u]!

[name_f]Anna[/name_f] it’s ranked at 41 here but I know 7 of them under 5 years old.

[name_u]Connie[/name_u] not even in the top 100 but I hear it a lot.

I know I’ve shared this on Nameberry before, but I’m still not over there being 2 Beatrices and 2 Daphnes in the same preschool class that I volunteer with (with only maybe 15 or so kids in the class total). Both names are super rare across the board in my city, but coincidentally I guess there were multiple parents in the neighborhood that liked them!

(Just checked out the actual data to find out how many of each name was born in my province the year they were born. There were only 31 girls named Daphne, and 43 named Beatrice! I live in one of the most populated provinces too, so that really says something about how unlikely it would be!)
