I adore you guys. I read your forums all the time in naming my fictional characters.
The time has come to name our first baby girl. I have a very common last name (top 100) and my wife and I prioritize giving them a unique first name/last name combo but without a name that is too confusing or odd.
That’s a thin slice, but we’ve found a few that work:
Adalia Cosette Galilee Indigo Oksana Shalyn
The trouble is we’re struggling to agree on one we both like. So I’m turning to you for suggestions of names that we might be able to add to our list. Thanks.
She’ll be a sibling to [name_m]Albus[/name_m].
I saw the name [name_f]Yara[/name_f] in another forum question. I was wary to admit it since she had her last name choice stolen, but it’s another unique gem. Maybe I’ll pass that one along.
[name_f]Adalia[/name_f] - seems a bit too similar to [name_m]Albus[/name_m]
[name_f]Cosette[/name_f] - another literary character… I like it but would prefer something more substantial
[name_f]Galilee[/name_f] - I love this name… strikes me as religious
[name_u]Indigo[/name_u] - perfect! Sounds magical but grounded, I love it with [name_m]Albus[/name_m]
[name_f]Oksana[/name_f] - a little too over the top, imo
[name_f]Shalyn[/name_f] - I prefer [name_u]Shea[/name_u] or [name_u]Shay[/name_u], the “lyn” ending is popular, making it sound trendy not unique.
[name_f]Adalia[/name_f] and [name_f]Shalyn[/name_f] sound trendy and similar to other popular names. [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] sounds too much like “coquette” to my ear, not an association you want. [name_f]Oksana[/name_f] is very ethnically Russian; [name_f]Galilee[/name_f] just seems too whimsical to work on a real person. [name_u]Indigo[/name_u] is probably my choice from your list, but it’s still pretty out there and sort of more of a dog name to me.
Here are some names that are really unusual, but still have a history and don’t sound like they’re trying to be too unique:
