Unique nature names?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], berries! Maybe this is just me being influenced by stories I’ve been writing, but these days I’ve been really enjoying thinking up eccentric/somewhat off-the-wall nature-inspired names. I’m talking about potential appellations far beyond the realm of [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_f]Jade[/name_f], haha. :sweat_smile:

Here are a few I’ve found in the database, just to give you an idea:

  • [name_f]Encelia[/name_f], [name_f]Cattleya[/name_f], [name_f]Pennyroyal[/name_f], [name_m]Melilot[/name_m] (plants)
  • [name_f]Agate[/name_f], [name_f]Amethyst[/name_f], [name_f]Galena[/name_f] (minerals)
  • [name_f]Mayfly[/name_f], [name_m]Crow[/name_m], [name_f]Swan[/name_f], [name_m]Odonata[/name_m], [name_f]Minnow[/name_f] (animals)

Anyway, I would love to hear your suggestions! As always, no real children are being named (obviously), so don’t be afraid to go as crazy as you want.

Thank you in advance. :heart:

I love love love Cypress as a name. I feel like most favorites that come to mind are more out there than Lily but less than the ones on your list. Senna, Linden, Aster, Cassia, Marigold, nameberry fave Linnea, etc.

Other names that come to mind that are more on the eccentric side than my go-to nature name ideas:

Lake
Sorrel
Anise
Skylark
Meadow
Meadowlark
Acacia
Sequoia
Daylight
Calendula
Moss
Grove
Cove
Rye

I am having issues with this and it keeps accidentally posting, so I’ll end my list here, but I am excited to see what people come up with!

Ok this is just down my line! Literally I came onto nameberry right now to find somewhere to post my latest find/crush… Marabou. Got the inspiration from the Marabou stork!
I hope to come back with more.

Well I just discovered Clione today, when I misspelt [name_f]Cleone[/name_f]. Clione are a genus of sea slugs, which are ever so cute, they float like little angels!
Some of my favourites are [name_f]Celandine[/name_f], [name_m]Malachite[/name_m] and [name_m]Vivendel[/name_m]. Botanicals not in the database and not so far as I know given to any humans: Liatris, Kniphofia, Pyracantha, Lisianthus, Japonica and Agathis.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite name right now is [name_f]Wren[/name_f]. It’s not too far out there any more these days. Others that appeal to me: Sapphire; Jade; Hyacinth; [name_f]Aster[/name_f] and then Jasper; [name_m]Rowan[/name_m] and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] for boys. Some nature names that might not be so usable are Periwinkle; [name_f]Honeysuckle[/name_f] and Pachysandra.

Wow, thank you everyone!

@NameSearchAccount Aw, I’m sorry you’ve had some issues, but your suggestions are great! [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_m]Sorrel[/name_m], [name_f]Meadow[/name_f], [name_f]Acacia[/name_f], Daylight and [name_m]Rye[/name_m] are so cute! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

@tallemaja I discovered [name_m]Melilot[/name_m] just yesterday and, well… I’m kind of in love with it. :pleading_face:

Suggestions from any language are more than welcome! :smiling_face:

I’m absolutely loving your ideas by the way, especially [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f], [name_f]Verbena[/name_f], [name_f]Bluebell[/namef_], [name_f]Amaranth[/name_f], [name_f]Daylily[/name_f], [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], Rosefinch (stop, that’s too cute!), [name_f]Feather[/name_f], [name_f]Marjoram[/name_f], [name_f]Moon[/name_f], [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], [name_f]Plum[/name_f], [name_m]Garnet[/name_m], [name_f]Acacia[/name_f] and [name_f]Gardenia[/name_f]!

@columbiacharm Sadly, the word “marabou(t)” has additional meanings (including some negative/mocking ones) in my native language so I won’t be able to appreciate it. :sob:

Out of your other suggestions, I particularly like [name_m]Yarrow[/name_m] and [name_m]Cygnus[/name_m]. [name_m]Pyrus[/name_m] and [name_f]Tamarisk[/name_f] are pretty intriguing as well!

@Greyblue Ooh, these are great suggestions! I’m loving Avocet, [name_m]Malachite[/name_m], [name_m]Obsidian[/name_m], [name_m]Meander[/name_m] (:heart:), [name_f]Stellaria[/name_f] and [name_f]Tourmaline[/name_f]!

@EdgeOfTheMeadow I can’t believe I never thought of Clione as a name! Those little cuties are among my favourite animals. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: Also really liking [name_f]Celandine[/name_f], [name_m]Malachite[/name_m], Pyracantha and Agathis (like a fantasy version of Agatha)!

@EloiseT Angelite is so beautiful!! Also loving [name_f]Acacia[/name_f], [name_m]Malachite[/name_m], [name_f]Feather[/name_f], [name_f]Daylily[/name_f], [name_f]Olivine[/name_f], [name_m]Lazuli[/name_m], [name_f]Tourmaline[/name_f], [name_f]Bijou[/name_f] and Midwinter (reminds me of Tove Jansson’s Moominland Midwinter, haha)!

@cms1512 I like how these look— are they pronounced as they are written or am I just that bad with Scottish names? :smiley:

@Frostivich [name_m]Lazuli[/name_m], Myrianthe and [name_m]Rosella[/name_f] are amazing! [name_f]Rhodanthe[/name_f] is quite intriguing, as well. [name_f]Frangipani[/name_f] made me smile— I have Plumeria (the “proper” name for frangipani) in a list.

@Greyblue [name_f]Amazing[/name_f], thank you!!

@maidcarrion Thank you! I’m loving the whimsical feel of Fairywren, [name_m]Floris[/name_m], [name_m]Obsidian[/name_m], [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], [name_f]Sora[/name_f] and [name_f]Linnet[/name_f] in particular. :smiling_face:

@HollyWaterfall I had overlooked [name_m]Rowan[/name_m]! It does have a very pleasant feel. Thank you!

@Kd4o4 Thank you! I’m really liking [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], [name_m]Sorrel[/name_m], [name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_m]Quartz[/name_m], [name_f]Topaz[/name_f], [name_m]Thorn[/name_m], [name_m]Eclipse[/name_m] (:star_struck:) and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]!

@atomicginge Look, I probably shouldn’t be so enthusiastic about it, but the fact that the word “carrion” can also refer to the decaying flesh of dead animals sort of makes me think it would make a… “fun” name for an ominous character. :face_with_peeking_eye:
