Unisex Name Discussion Thread

I got the idea for this because I was looking at the name [name]Grady[/name] and I just noticed that it was unisex. I really cannot picture [name]Grady[/name] on a little girl. Does anyone know of a little girl named [name]Grady[/name]? [name]Just[/name] wondering.

Also have fun talking about other unisex names

I think that these days almost anything can and will be used for girls. However, I don’t think that the minute a name is used for a few girls it becomes unisex. It starts to become unisex in my mind when it actually makes the Social Security charts on both sides of the chart. I know girls named [name]Wesley[/name], [name]Porter[/name] and [name]Earl[/name] but that doesn’t make those names unisex! [name]Grady[/name] still seems pretty firmly planted on the boy side of the chart. But when names end in -y or -ley they often start to be used for girls. Boys names for girls are not my style at all, but everyone has their own individual, often extremely personal, reasons for naming their children so I try not to be too judgmental. I do draw the line at yooneek spellings though!

Never heard of a girl [name]Grady[/name], but I have no trouble imagining it. I guess that means there are girl Bradys, too.

A girl [name]Wesley[/name] - I’d been waiting to hear of that. Unlike [name]Porter[/name] and [name]Earl[/name], this one has a chance of becoming significantly used for girls. In fact, with [name]Leslie[/name] having crossed over, I’m surprised [name]Wesley[/name] hasn’t yet.

I’m usually quick to accept names crossing over. Yanc(e)y, for example, showed up on the SSA list a few times for boys and never for girls. Nameberry lists it only for boys. When I heard of the actress [name]Yancy[/name] [name]Butler[/name], I found her name quite charming.

If there’s a recognized unisex name I dislike on girls, I probably dislike it on boys too ([name]Avery[/name]).
