I am not a big fan of unisex names. Nothing to do with the patriarchy, just not my style. However, I do tend to like some softer sounding boy names. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you consider these names male or unisex? Also, do you think in the next decade any of these will be used equally for girls and boys or more for girls?
I would consider all of these male, with the exception of [name_u]Lane[/name_u], which I think is pretty unisex, but I definitely prefer it for a boy. [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] almost seems kind of unisex but has a female counterpart, [name_u]Jessie[/name_u]; I personally would only use [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] as a boys name, and [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] as a girls name. I think [name_u]Reid[/name_u] will continue to be used pretty much only for boys. I can see [name_u]Lane[/name_u] and [name_u]Jude[/name_u] rising for girls, not sure where they currently sit on the charts for either gender…they could possibly be pretty close to equally ranked for both. I don’t think [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_m]Jonah[/name_m], or [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] will gain much traction on the girls side.
I think those names are very masculine. I think it will be more used on girls, but I think they’ll remain very masculine. Except [name_u]Jesse[/name_u], not in spelling but in pronounciation, it sound like [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] which is pretty feminine to me
I prefer them all for boys but I know some are being used for girls and I expect will rise in use for them. [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], [name_u]Lane[/name_u] and [name_u]Jude[/name_u]. I don’t consider [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] unisex but it can be a nickname for girl names like [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], [name_f]Jessa[/name_f], [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f], etc. [name_u]Reid[/name_u] and [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] I think are safe. For now. But honestly, naming trends are hard to predict. We’re 1 female celebrity named [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] away from that being the next big thing. Use the name you love and try not to worry about who else is using it and for who. Good luck and congratulations!
Also except [name_u]Lane[/name_u] read predominantly male to me, but I know that that [name_u]Jude[/name_u] and [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] are occasionally used on girls, and [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] with the “i” is usually female.
[name_u]Lane[/name_u] is certainly gender neutral, and I suppose [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] could be also (given the Scrubs character).
I see most people above saying that [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] is the female form of [name_u]Jesse[/name_u], which is true (it’s my name!) however the amount of times people spell my name “[name_u]Jesse[/name_u]” they do seem to think that is gender neutral…
Are these names unisex?
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] - not really. I think of it as a male name that is used for girls rarely
[name_u]Jude[/name_u] - absolutely. Know Judes of both genders.
[name_u]Jesse[/name_u] - for sure. This is a lot like [name_u]Jamie[/name_u], could go either way.
[name_m]Jonah[/name_m] - it’s masculine but probably wouldn’t raise eyebrows on a girl.
[name_u]Lane[/name_u] - yes, but my first guess would be male.
[name_u]Reid[/name_u] - yes. I know [name_u]Reid[/name_u]'s of both genders.
[name_m]Julian[/name_m], [name_u]Linden[/name_u] and [name_u]Francis[/name_u] are some other soft-sounding yet masculine names.
I’ve seen [name_u]Lane[/name_u] & [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] used for girls. Also, if you’re thinking of the future, [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] seems to be heading in the direction of gender neutral.
[name_u]Jude[/name_u] seems very masculine to me, as do [name_u]Reid[/name_u] & [name_m]Jonah[/name_m]
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] is a boys name to me, although I have heard it be used on girls I definitely think it’s becoming more popular for girls.
I can see [name_u]Jude[/name_u] on a girl, but for me again this is a boys name. I don’t think this one will be so popular on girls.
When I was a kid I always found it odd to see tv shows or bands with a boy called [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] in it, because I’d only ever heard of [name_u]Jessie[/name_u]/[name_u]Jessy[/name_u] as a nickname for [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]. Seeing it written down as [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] though, I’d say this is a boys name.
[name_m]Jonah[/name_m] is definitely all boy.
[name_u]Lane[/name_u] is truly unisex. I’d probably put it more on a girl, because of [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] or [name_f]Lainey[/name_f].
None of these really strike me as “soft sounding” except maybe [name_u]Lane[/name_u].
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] - It’s a surname so theoretically fair game, although it comes from the masculine name [name_u]Elias[/name_u] so I’d say this leans very masculine to me.
[name_u]Jude[/name_u] - Traditionally masculine in origin and usage, but as has been pointed out it has had some usage on girls. I think it is occasionally used on girls because it can be short for [name_f]Judith[/name_f].
[name_u]Jesse[/name_u] - Everyone else already said what I was going to say about [name_u]Jesse[/name_u].
[name_m]Jonah[/name_m] - Traditionally masculine. The -ah ending doesn’t seem to have negated that in terms of its usage.
[name_u]Lane[/name_u] - Surname, with similarities to both [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] and [name_m]Wayne[/name_m]/[name_m]Kane[/name_m]/[name_u]Dane[/name_u]/[name_m]Zane[/name_m] this feels pretty evenly unisex to me.
[name_u]Reid[/name_u] - Surname, so probably fair game, I think it’s likelier on boys.
Male, except [name_u]Lane[/name_u]. The others are all unequivocally male. [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] could be a nickname for [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] but as a stand-alone name it is male.
Nameberry uses colored ink to indicate male, female and unisex. MOST names are orange, unisex, and I think this is the way naming is going.
The elementary school has 4 little girls named [name_f]Charli[/name_f].
But when I saw a sweet baby girl named [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] (!) I figured nothing is safe!
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u] - I’ve only met one person with that name and he was a boy. I love [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] for a boy way more than for a girl.
[name_u]Jude[/name_u] - Can only see this on a boy.
[name_u]Jesse[/name_u] - This is more of a boy’s name. [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] is the girl’s spelling. I first heard this name on [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] McCartney when he was on [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_u]Montana[/name_u] back in the day. I love [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] for a boy.
[name_m]Jonah[/name_m] - 100% boy’s name. I love this name. Such a cool biblical name.
[name_u]Lane[/name_u] - This is a girl’s name to me thanks to [name_u]Lane[/name_u] from [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls.
[name_u]Reid[/name_u] - Boy’s name for sure. I used to have a crush on a boy with this name in middle school.
The only name’s I really see being more popular for girls is [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] and [name_u]Lane[/name_u].
I consider them masculine but I agree with the others they can be unisex. I have a [name_u]Layne[/name_u] so I do consider it masculine. I like all the names.
[name_u]Elliott[/name_u]: Although I think male when I hear this name, I can see it being used for girls in the coming years, with the nickname [name_f]Elly[/name_f].
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]: I think this will remain masculine
[name_u]Jesse[/name_u]: Currently being used for either sex. However, [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] is the more popular spelling for girls
[name_m]Jonah[/name_m]: I see this staying as a masculine name
[name_u]Lane[/name_u]: Both masculine and feminine
