I’m reading a book right now that is bothering me so much, because it has people in their thirties named [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_u]Aria[/name_u], [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] (female at that), [name_m]Caden[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u], and [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] and [name_u]Oliver[/name_u]. From a small town at that. Not likely! Does anyone else get annoyed by things like that?
People this age would more likely be [name_f]Heather[/name_f], [name_f]Amanda[/name_f], [name_f]Samantha[/name_f], [name_u]Chris[/name_u], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_u]Alex[/name_u], and [name_u]Austin[/name_u] or something

I saw a book on Goodreads once that was supposedly set in 1910, but the heroine was named Madysen. That spelling. No joke.
(I mean, [name_u]Madison[/name_u] would have been bad enough, but Madysen??? As you can see, I still have not been able to get over that one.)

Yes! Gah! That sounds so annoying!! I’d hate to read a book like that… I really don’t like it when the names just don’t match up with the setting of the book or characters’ traits…
I very much misread this and begin making a list of unusual character names I have found.
I like when names are age and location appropriate, but most of the books I read are [name_f]Fantasy[/name_f] so it doesn’t apply.
I just thought of a few authors who do this. [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] [name_m]Hoover[/name_m] is one of the worst, she has characters in their twenties and thirties named things like [name_u]Sloan[/name_u], [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_u]Asa[/name_u], females [name_u]Lowen[/name_u] and [name_u]Tate[/name_u], [name_u]Honor[/name_u], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], etc. Cool names but unlikely for people of that age group. Same for [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Green[/name_u] with his teenaged [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] and [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] back when the average teenager was [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and [name_u]Austin[/name_u].
Another culprit is the author [name_f]Christina[/name_f] lauren. She has people in their twenties and thirties named [name_f]Macy[/name_f], [name_u]Hazel[/name_u], [name_u]Holland[/name_u], [name_u]Reid[/name_u], [name_f]Millie[/name_f].
I just read a [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] [name_m]Hoover[/name_m] book with characters [name_f]Layla[/name_f], [name_u]Willow[/name_u], [name_u]Sable[/name_u], [name_u]Aspen[/name_u], and Leeds. They were all supposed to be in their 20s. It honestly doesn’t bother me too much just because if I was an author I think I’d want to name characters names I like, but I definitely do notice it and I can see why it might bug other people. And I think the time period of when the story is taking place makes a difference for me too. The book someone else mentioned with a character named Madysen in 1910 is definitely annoying and I don’t think I could get past it because it would totally remove you from the setting of the story.
