Unrelated Nicknames

I know how everybody loves to plan out great nicknames for their favorite names- I do the same thing. But I was thinking about how sometimes the kid grows up and ends up with a totally unrelated nickname. Like, you put all this thought into nicknaming [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Meg[/name]- not [name]Maggie[/name]- but it all goes to naught when everybody starts calling her something like [name]Birdie[/name] for some completely random reason. Stories?

I’ll start. My name is [name]Tara[/name] and nobody has ever called me [name]Terry[/name]. The (ridiculous) nickname Tarabara was quickly changed into the odd shortened version, [name]Bear[/name]. So, that’s my unrelated nickname- even harder to find on customized keychains than its original. My sister’s name is [name]Amber[/name] and we always called her [name]Bambi[/name]. My brother [name]Jordan[/name]- [name]George[/name]. My cat [name]Mia[/name]- Skinny (until she got fat).

My father very rarely called my brother and I by our actual names, preferring to use nicknames, that only he called us by: I got [name]Tiger[/name], and my younger brother, [name]Buddy[/name]. My mother often called me [name]Lily[/name], which is in no way connected to my given names.

I had a family friend who used to call me [name]Lola[/name], aside from my name starting with an L, lola is completely unrelated to my name. I didn’t really mind but I thought it was weird since ive never been too sure as to what kind of person a [name]Lola[/name] would be. I’ve been called [name]Lilou[/name] too again based only on the L.

I prefer names that have nothing to do with the real name, it’s more personalized

I went to high school with a boy called [name]Bird[/name]. I don’t know where the name came from, when he first transferred to our school he was just [name]Louis[/name]. Somehow his buddies named him [name]Bird[/name] and it’s stuck ever since

I used to work at a daycare and had sibs Gracen (boy) and [name]Hayden[/name] (girl). I always got them mixed up because [name]Hayden[/name] seems the more masculine of the two. Plus we had little girls named [name]Grace[/name], [name]Gracie[/name], and Gracen, a boy name Grayton, a boy [name]Hayden[/name], and boys [name]Aidan[/name] and [name]Aiden[/name]. Gracen would get so annoyed with me for calling him a “girl” name so one day I said “Look buddy, your name is [name]Walter[/name].” It stuck. When his mom heard me call for him one day, she started calling him [name]Walter[/name] too

i don’t really like them, but sometimes they just happen! i know a person named [name]Sharon[/name] who goes by Moosie to a lot of her family and a woman named [name]Melissa[/name] that goes by Tutu/Aunt Tutu by her nieces and nephews. it seem like a lot of unrelated nicknames come from family members.

i went to school with a boy named [name]Andrew[/name] and i don’t know how it happened but around 7th grade everyone started calling him [name]Fred[/name] and it stuck as his nickname until we graduated high school.

My sister [name]Caroline[/name] ended up as [name]Marita[/name] Burrito somehow. My other sister [name]Elizabeth[/name] was [name]Annie[/name] [name]Oakley[/name]. I ended up going as Doodlebug or Katydid. My son’s name is [name]Asher[/name], but we call him Buggy or Buggyboo or Bubby.

My name is [name]Grace[/name]…My friends have called my Graceface for as long as I remember. Its a totally redundant nickname, but it stuck and I kind of like it now.

Well, I know a [name]Claudia[/name] who gets called ‘Coggie’, an [name]Elizabeth[/name] that is only called ‘Bunty’ and an [name]Alexander[/name] who is always called ‘[name]Dave[/name]’.

LOL at the [name]Alexander[/name] who is called [name]Dave[/name]! That’s really different! I went to Elementary school with a girl named [name]Anastasia[/name], and she hated it. But she was called [name]Anastasia[/name] from birth, and was up until grade 7. On the first day of grade 7, she came to school, with her bookbag, lunchbag, and pencil case marked with “[name]Leia[/name]” on them. She stopped answering to [name]Anastasia[/name], and only answered to [name]Leia[/name]! When we graduated high school, she switched to [name]Lee[/name]. She legally changed her name to [name]Lee[/name] [name]Anastasia[/name] when she turned 20.

My son’s name is [name]Everett[/name], but I mostly just call him Bug, Buggy, or Stink Bug  My college nn was the strangest one I’ve heard. I had a close guy friend that was annoyed at me at the moment and came up with the nn [name]Whit[/name]-sh**, but since I don’t cuss and he knows it, he changed it to Whitpoop. It cracked my roommates up so much that they all started calling me that (and they still do). Of course it spread to all my friends and eventually got shortened to just Poop. So I was called Poop or Whitpoop for most of college. I thought it was funny, and I still like when they call me that. It brings back good memories

I’m [name]Angel[/name] and I hate when people try to call me [name]Angie[/name] or Ang. My friend and I were goofing off one day making up these ridiculous names for each other and she named me Manwell [name]Rodriquez[/name] and i named her Fishy [name]Gilmore[/name]. [name]Every[/name] since that day (back in 10th grade) every one in my group of friends calls me [name]Manny[/name] and her Fishy (sometimes Twiggy because she’s so skinny). I’m a senior in college now and whenever she sends me a facebook message she always starts it with “dear [name]Manny[/name]”.

So that’s my unrelated nickname. I love it actually!

My name is [name]Theresa[/name] and my family calls me Tweed about 90% of the time. Apparently as an baby my dad came in to take me out of my crib and he thought I looked like Tweety [name]Bird[/name]. Anyways, the nickname stuck. My dad calls me Tweed more than anyone else, but his siblings and my grandma also call me Tweed. My mom lengthens it and calls me Tweety [name]Bird[/name] rather than [name]Theresa[/name].

I also had a friend in high school named [name]Mike[/name] and a few of my friends and I decided he didn’t look like a [name]Mike[/name] at all. Instead, we named him [name]Sam[/name]. He still answers to [name]Sam[/name] to this day, and I have a hard time remembering that his real name is [name]Mike[/name]!

The most unrelated nn I have is Bubbles! I was called this by everyone throughout highschool. I don’t even remember which one of my friends came up with it, but it was because of my bubbly personality. I’ve always liked it :] Jaybayy is the nn another one of my friends came up with that’s stuck with me. She still calls me that to this day, and that’s where my berry username came from (of course.) Although, Jaybayy isn’t exactly unrelated to my name ([name]Jessie[/name].)

@theresaellie, that’s totally weird because I know a [name]Mike[/name] everybody calls [name]Sam[/name] as well, no relation or reason whatsoever. I also know a [name]Jessica[/name] called [name]Steve[/name] and a [name]Jayce[/name] called [name]Jan[/name]. Oh, and a [name]William[/name] called B.J. I actually love unrelated nicknames, I love the randomness of them.

My best friend is [name]Adrianna[/name] and gets called Bean by her family and close friends (at least those she met before high school). [name]Even[/name] my family calls her Bean.

I go by [name]Katy[/name], but my best friend in high school called me [name]Tay[/name] or [name]Tena[/name] (long story)! My dog’s name is [name]Sam[/name], but I call her Nugget more than anything, and my cat named [name]Rocky[/name] is usually just called sweet boy. I think I will end up choosing long given names for my children so they can have several possible nicknames.

My dad is the one in our family giving everyone weird nicknames. My name is [name]Danielle[/name] but he called me Bashima for I don’t know what reason. I think it evolved from that scene in Indiana Jones when the guy is saying “Kalima!” but I may be wrong. It could have just been a coincidence that they rhyme. He did often say Bashima in the same way as that guy, because my dad is weird like that. “Bashima! Bashima! Bashima shun-ti-dey!” or something like that. Hahah. We were [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] fans. I need to ask him where he came up with that name. Oh, I am sometimes called Yellie by my family, but that’s not an unrelated nickname because it comes from the last half of my real name.

My brother is called [name]Bart[/name] by my dad because my dad joked that he wanted to name him [name]Bartholomew[/name] when my mom was pregnant with him, but instead he was named [name]Matthew[/name] (which is kind of similar) so my dad has called him [name]Bart[/name] his whole life.

My sister is called Shpoe by my dad. I am just as clueless as to where that came from as I am about my own nickname.

My mom is called both [name]Bertha[/name] and Moonie by my family, but her real name is [name]Anne[/name] [name]Marie[/name]. She told me once where those nicknames came from but I don’t remember. She is called Aunt [name]Bertha[/name] by my cousins, but more often she is Moonie to her siblings and parents.

Boo-Boo.

Ugh, I don’t understand it, and I want to live it down SO badly, lol. My little sister (who has a “B” nn related to her name–I suppose that might be where it came from) insisted on giving cutesy “B” nicknames to all of her siblings. Our brother [name]John[/name] got Bon-Bon (not sure why, except that [name]John[/name]-[name]John[/name] turned to Bon-Bon and she was taking French at the time, and likely had her teacher discussing bonbons, haha. Our baby sister became [name]Baby[/name], which makes the most sense, I suppose. And then I became Boo-Boo. I don’t even know where it came from, but it’s so childish and cutesy and I hate it. I hate that I even respond to it, lol! That’s really the only nn not related to my actual name I have.

I nicknamed my little brother [name]Buddy[/name]… I still call him that. It started out as [name]Buster[/name], and somehow it morphed into [name]Buddy[/name], I’m not sure how. He’s still my little buddy, though, so I don’t see it changing. I had initially wanted my kids to call him Uncle [name]Buddy[/name], but I’ve kind of let that go, lol.

I don’t have kids yet, but I’m sure they’ll get them. My family’s not big on unrelated nns, though, so I doubt it’ll be a huge thing. But for presents/little notes/etc. my mom has given all of us little animal/bird/insect nns (ladybug, butterfly, hummingbird, dragonfly, etc.), and I plan to use those, too. So far, I like “sparrow” for my first daughter and “bear” for my first son, and I like a few others, like firefly, fox, lark, etc., too. I think I’ll play that by ear a bit more than the actual nn I like for a full name.

In my family, we are some nick naming fools  My nickname is Kricket (only name my family calls me) but had no relation to my given name except the “K”. My brother randomly started calling me Kree Kree nickname for Kricket which turned into just Kree, what my nieces and nephews call me. My sisters name is [name]Kara[/name] but my mom calls her [name]Kari[/name]? We always wonder why she just didn’t name her [name]Kari[/name] to start with. My [name]SIL[/name] used to call my brother Beltone, part of which she got from our last name. We call my brother, [name]Kane[/name], and his wife, [name]Amy[/name],…Kamy because they were always together, like “Brangelina” haha.

My cousin named her daughter [name]Aurora[/name] with the intention to call her [name]Rory[/name], but she’s five years old now and mostly she gets called Monkey!
