I’m having a name dilemma. For a while now, I have loved the name [name_f]Ava[/name_f]. I think the sound is very pretty, and the association with [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_u]Gardner[/name_u] is an added bonus! I am unsure about [name_f]Ava[/name_f] because when I eventually name children, their names have to have been well loved around the late 1800s to early 1900s. My love for vintage names comes from the shows I have watched since I was a child; the Waltons, Road to Avonlea, [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables, etc, etc. I am not attracted to modern names, but more so timeless, vintage, and classic names. I’m worried that the name will date, like [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] and [name_u]Avery[/name_u] will. What do you think? Does [name_f]Ava[/name_f] fit in with the names in my signature below? Should I consider using it?
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] is a lovely name, with a spunky, fun vibe. It does feel modern to me though, due to not having much of a history of use.
Some of the names on your list feel both classic and modern to me, as in they would fit in just fine in both 1900 and 2016 (or 2017- happy new year!). Those would sound fine with [name_f]Ava[/name_f]. From your girls’ list, these would go well with [name_f]Ava[/name_f] in my opinion: [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]… [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] do stylistically but are a bit too similar sound-wise. From your boys’ list, I could see them all as a brother to [name_f]Ava[/name_f] except [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Walter[/name_m] which don’t sound as current.
[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there, I really like the names in your signature and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] doesn’t seem to fit. It was never a traditional name and relatively unknown until [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_u]Gardner[/name_u] became a star. [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] is a more traditional name than [name_f]Ava[/name_f]!
I do love [name_f]Ava[/name_f]… but, yes, I think it’s already becoming dated and the popularity of [name_u]Avery[/name_u] doesn’t help.
Suggestions:
[name_f]Anne[/name_f] - not a common name anymore, and I think it’s beautiful. I would sooner use [name_f]Anne[/name_f] than [name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Stella[/name_f].
[name_f]Diana[/name_f] - I think this name is really cool. It’s meaningful, and I’ve known several young women and teens with the name. They love it and receive many compliments.
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]
[name_f]Ida[/name_f]
[name_f]Ilsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Jillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f] (nn [name_u]Josie[/name_u])
[name_f]Lavender[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]

Honestly, despite [name_f]Ava[/name_f]'s current popularity, the only real connection I can think of is [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_u]Gardner[/name_u], (much like [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] and [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] Bacall), so therefore, for me, it’s vintage. Since most of your names are currently popular, like [name_f]Ava[/name_f], I think it fits just fine. I particularly like [name_f]Ava[/name_f] with [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]!
Sadly, [name_f]Ava[/name_f] will feel dated simply because there are so dang many of them. In ten years, you will know when [name_f]Ava[/name_f] was born.
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] does feel more modern than vintage to me. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_u]Gardner[/name_u] may have been a star during Hollywood’s [name_u]Golden[/name_u] Age, but her name was rare until it suddenly became very popular in the early 2000s.
It depends on how long [name_f]Ava[/name_f] stays in the top 10. I would consider [name_u]Madison[/name_u] a dated name because of its popularity in my age group, but its popularity is continuing to hold into the next generation. I’ve come across [name_f]Ava[/name_f]/[name_f]Avie[/name_f]/[name_f]Avis[/name_f] quite a bit in my genealogy research, so it does feel like a revival name to me.
I love [name_f]Ava[/name_f], but she’s just become so darn popular! I’d say [name_f]Ava[/name_f] was vintage before she became so popular. Now [name_f]Ava[/name_f] is more vintage popular like [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], all beautiful yet huge revival now.
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] could very well go with your vintage list, but she can easily go with modern names too. I adore [name_f]Ava[/name_f] when she’s used with other names like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and [name_f]Claire[/name_f]. I don’t like when she’s used with other names like [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], and [name_m]Caden[/name_m]. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] depends on the context for me.
Thanks everyone for your feedback! On a side note, how would [name_f]Ava[/name_f] sound with [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] as siblings?
I love [name_f]Ava[/name_f] with [name_f]Stella[/name_f], and I like [name_f]Ava[/name_f] with [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]. I think all 3 are great together.
