Unusual (Idiosyncratic or old-fashioned) Names + the other half of a sibset

I am looking for a couple of names. One is for my protagonist’s best friend, the other is for my protagonist’s mother, who has a sister who features prominently in the story.

Genre of [name_u]Story[/name_u]: Family [name_u]Drama[/name_u]/Slice of Life

Time Period/Location: Current day [name_f]Alabama[/name_f]

Brief Plot: A recently graduated actress struggling to find work takes a job at a small theatre in her mother’s hometown. She plans to use the opportunity to help care for her grandmother, who has Alzheimer’s. During her time there, her grandmother begins to reveal details about the life of an estranged aunt, who the woman begins trying to seek out for further answers.

Character 1

Character Description: Quiet and carefully cordial, but with an extremely dry sense of humor once you get to know her. Bookish, likes routine, repetition, and learning. 20 years old. Autistic. Works at the local library, and currently as a dramaturg for the theatre company. Sheltered by parents who don’t trust her to live alone, and starting to feel frustrated and trapped by them. Rather brilliant, attended a community college and graduated early. Wants to continue her education.

Who named the character: Her parents, who are overprotective and fairly old-fashioned. She currently lives with them.

Immediate Family: Her parents (who haven’t been named yet).

Already Considered: I’ve tossed around [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] and [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], but I’m not sold on them yet. I do like the idea of something old fashioned, not frequently used these days, etc.

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t Suggest These Names: I would like to avoid names starting with K or C, as my protagonist’s name is [name_f]Kat[/name_f].

Anything [name_f]Else[/name_f]: That’s pretty much it.

Character 2:

Names of Current Characters: [name_f]Kat[/name_f], her daughter, and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f], her estranged younger sister ([name_f]Kat[/name_f] was named after her). Her name needs to fit with [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]'s name.

Character Description: A mother, somewhat downtrodden but extremely focused on her family, and holding it together. Afraid of hurting her family or driving them away. All the same, extremely strong in her own way. Has a sister who she was very close to when she was younger, but hasn’t spoken to in years. She thinks of her often.

Who Named the Character: Her parents, an older southern couple who are now in poor health.

Immediate Family: Her parents and husband (currently unnamed), her daughter, [name_f]Kat[/name_f], and her sister, [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f].

Already Considered: None

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t Suggest These Names: Again, K or C names.

Anything [name_f]Else[/name_f]: Her current surname (now that she is married) is [name_m]Callaghan[/name_m].

I appreciate any and all help and ideas!

Character 1: Suggestion 1: [name_f]Dorthy[/name_f] or [name_f]Dorthea[/name_f] called [name_f]Dolly[/name_f], perhaps it is due to the indomitable Ms. [name_m]Parton[/name_m], but [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] seems a very southern name to me. 3. [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] - A famous [name_f]Emeline[/name_f] ([name_f]Emeline[/name_f] Piggott if your wondering) worked as a spy for the the Confederacy, this name seems to have a lot of southern charm, could also do [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] or [name_f]Emmaline[/name_f] for the same effect. Could be called [name_f]Emma[/name_f], or [name_f]Emme[/name_f]. 3. [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] - could be called [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. Both [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] feel quite old fashioned and southern to me. Lastly suggestion 4: [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] - Seems like a name that protective parents might name their brilliant daughter.

Character 2: Suggestion 1: [name_f]Sally[/name_f]. If her parents named her sister [name_f]Kate[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Katheryn[/name_f], it seems consistent that they would name her [name_f]Sally[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]. Likewise it makes since to to me that someone who grew up as a [name_f]Sally[/name_f] might have a strong connection to the name [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], and want to name her own daughter that. 2. [name_f]Hannah[/name_f]- Means [name_f]Grace[/name_f], and that what it sounds like this character has even under duress. [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] seem similar and like they might be in the same family. 3. [name_f]Savannah[/name_f] - A thoroughly southern name that has lot of imagery built into it.

Good luck!!!

I’m definitely adding [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] to the list of possibilities for Character 1, and adding [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Savannah[/name_f] as possibilities for Character 2.

I’m also considering adding [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] to my possibilities for Character 1, if anyone has any thoughts on that.
