I love the name [name]Urijah[/name] bt it seems like alot of people dislike it?
Reminds me of urnine, urinal, Uranus… Yeah, not good associations. The child’s classmates would have a hey day.
I like the name [name]Uriah[/name].I have never seen it spelled with a ‘j’ before.
I like the sound OK, but yes it is close to a lot of unfortunate words. [name]Uriah[/name] is too but at least feels less made up (I’m not saying [name]Urijah[/name] is, I don’t know, but [name]Uriah[/name] certainly feels more traditional - [name]Urijah[/name] seems like a fusing of [name]Uriah[/name] and [name]Elijah[/name]) so it has more name-ness to pull it away from the word. Although [name]Uriah[/name] feels pretty old-manny, maybe that’s part of the difficulty with [name]Urijah[/name] too. If it is invented and you’re OK with that, what about Rijah? Sounds kind of tough-boy and cool to my ear. Best wishes!
[name]Uriah[/name] is the male name and is more common in [name]Israel[/name] as [name]Uri[/name]. (There is also the angel name, [name]Uriel[/name].) [name]Uriah[/name] was a captain in [name]King[/name] [name]David[/name]'s army who was married to [name]Bathsheba[/name]. When [name]David[/name] saw her, he wanted her, so he sent [name]Uriah[/name] to the front with a new post so he could take [name]Bathsheba[/name] to wife. [name]Uriah[/name] was killed in action, and [name]David[/name] married [name]Bathsheba[/name]. This is why it was [name]Solomon[/name], [name]David[/name]'s son, who was given the Ark to build and not [name]David[/name]. It’s a pretty sad story, [name]Uriah[/name] having been a righteous man. Currently I have an African-American female student named [name]Uriah[/name], who goes by [name]Riah[/name].
I just can’t get over the similarity to the word urine.
Isn’t [name]Urijah[/name] the name of the guy in the Old Testament who was supposed to guide the Ark of the Covenant back to [name]Israel[/name], but they put it on a cart instead of carrying it with the poles? So when it tipped, he steadied it with his hand, and then God struck him dead? Or was he another [name]Uriah[/name]? I thought the name was similar…
I agree with the others. I don’t really see urine/urinal/etc., but so many people do that even if I do see the appeal of [name]Uriah[/name] (and maybe [name]Urijah[/name]–I like [name]Uriah[/name] more), I would never use it because that association is so overwhelming.
[name]Just[/name] saw on tv an MMA fighter named [name]Uriah[/name] [name]Faber[/name]…
It looks like a convoluted spelling of [name]Uriah[/name]. Its ok, but there’s a lot of teasing potential and the whole [name]Uriah[/name] Heep association to contend with.
That was Uzzah. [name]Uriah[/name]/[name]Urijah[/name] is more attractive, [name]IMO[/name]! The short form [name]Uri[/name] is a guilty pleasure of mine; I probably wouldn’t use it because of the association with unfortunate words. I once saw the boy/boy twinset [name]Lucius[/name] and [name]Uri[/name] suggested (I think here on Nameberry), and fell in love. They share the meaning “light.”
I love [name]Urijah[/name], but yeah it seems like one of those names that a lot of people dislike.
Looks like a bad smoosh of two legitimate names [name]Uriah[/name] and [name]Elijah[/name]. Modern inventions rarely work for me.
I have never heard of [name]Urijah[/name] being a name, unless it is meant to be pronounced like [name]Uriah[/name], just with a silent J.
On a side note, [name]Uriah[/name] is a Hebrew name which is pronounced “OO-ree-yah” , rather than “Yoor-ee-ah.” If you were considering the second pronunciation, I’d agree that it would sounds like urine. The first one, though, is very nice.
It remind me of Urine, sorry. I prefer it like [name]Uriah[/name] though, the J makes me want to pronounce it your-eye-juh.
I’m sorry, bad association with the villain in [name]David[/name] Copperfield… I think this one would be hard to redeem. Maybe look for a name with the same style ?
If we have a boy we are naming him Uriyah pronounced "your-eye-yah’ I too thought about the fact that it sounds a little like Urine, but the more I say the name the more I stop thinking about it. I’m pretty sure we’ll have a nick name for him like [name_m]Uri[/name_m] or [name_m]Rye[/name_m]. I think it’s a gorgeous name with an amazing meaning. God is my light or fire. I decided to put a “y” in the spelling because all the kids in our family have “y’s” [name_f]My[/name_f] sons name is [name_u]Ayden[/name_u] and nephews are [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] and [name_u]Bryce[/name_u]
