Your completely honest opinions please.
[name]Sister[/name] to [name]Petra[/name].
I think [name]Ursula[/name] is cool. It works well with [name]Petra[/name]. My only reservation is its the name of the sea witch from The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid.
I can’t get past The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid association. There’s something about the sound I don’t like.
I might be the only one who says this but I love it! [name]Ursula[/name] & [name]Petra[/name] would be gorgeous! I have an aunt [name]Ursula[/name] so I don’t think of The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid at all!
I agree! I love [name]Ursula[/name]! I think it’s so awesome. I met an [name]Ursula[/name] at my job, and I was literally gushing over her name. She just seemed so embarrassed, lol, she was like, “Oh, yeah, well, I’m from Germany…” I couldn’t believe I had met an [name]Ursula[/name]. It seems like every time I come across it, everyone hates it or relates it to The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid. I think it’s lovely. I would probably use it as a MN, just because I’m not gutsy enough to use it as a FN, but I do think [name]Petra[/name] and [name]Ursula[/name] are nice together!
No offence but I think it is one of the worst names I have ever heard. Plus the character [name]Ursula[/name] from the little mermaid is evil.
The first time I ever heard the name was in the [name]Little[/name] Mermaid. I’ve only heard of one other person with the name, who was beautiful and lovely. So I’ve had equal positive and negative experiences with it.
However, I dislike the name a lot. It does not sound pretty imo, but it’s not horrid. I guess it depends on where you live and such.
[name]Petra[/name] is such a lovely name that I would hate to see it paired with [name]Ursula[/name], honestly. There are so many better options out there as far as names go! Of course I associate the name with the sea witch in the [name]Little[/name] Mermaid (incredibly ugly) but besides that, there is something about the sound of the name that really bothers me. I think it is the “UR” sound that I find displeasing to the ear.
I admire [name]Ursula[/name] for how traditional it is, yet daring and not often used. It matches [name]Petra[/name] well in those regards, in my opinion.
That said, honestly, the “ur” sound is not my favorite, though I do love the meaning of ursa–bear. You could use it and go with [name]Sula[/name] or [name]Lula[/name] for a nickname, maybe? I fear [name]Ursula[/name] might be a difficult name to wear these days (the sound doesn’t fit the zeitgeist aesthetic). On the other hand, the right kid could make it totally cool. I think it would really depend on the girl, and how she wore it. One [name]Ursula[/name] might wilt under what seems to me a slightly challenging name, and the another could totally rock it.
If you’re concerned about the negative reactions/[name]Little[/name] Mermaid associations, you might consider [name]Ursuline[/name] or [name]Ursulina[/name].
I think [name]Petra[/name] & [name]Ursula[/name] go very well together!
I really like this name (mainly because I really liked a character played by [name]Judi[/name] Dench in a movie ‘Ladies in [name]Lavender[/name]’). I also think [name]Ursula[/name] was the name or actress who played a bond girl - I think that’s a nice association!
I really love it. It brings to mind The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid (of course), but it also makes me think of [name]Ursula[/name] Andress, who played my favorite [name]Bond[/name] girl, and a babysitter I once had, who we called Uschi (pronounced OO-SHEE). I think [name]Petra[/name] and [name]Ursula[/name] together bring to mind really brave, intelligent girls.
I love unique names like this–but don’t use it. The kid will be teased endlessly, sadly. I don’t think the world is ready for [name]Ursula[/name].
Thanks for all the replies.
I do worry a little that people might meet my daughters and think, “Oh, little [name]Petra[/name] got such a lovely name; what happened with poor [name]Ursula[/name]!” I guess I’ve met too many siblings where the names got more and more “unique” (ie bad) as the kids got younger – almost as if the parents starting running out of options or else got braver and braver.
The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid connection doesn’t concern me in the least.
I think that I love the idea of this name and want to love the name itself (mainly thanks to the author [name]Ursula[/name] [name]Le[/name] Guin), but something is holding me back. I agree that the “ur” sound at the beginning is harsh. I imagine her nickname would be [name]Sully[/name], which I find really cute.
I’m sorry but I hate it. My 3 year old daughter’s favorite movie is, “The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid”, so all I think of is the sea witch.
My name is [name]Ursula[/name], and I was a kid when the [name]Little[/name] Mermaid came out. I have to say that, although the movie definitely affected public perception of my name and did lead to some jokes, I have never disliked or regretted my name because of it. In fact, I have always loved my name even though many others don’t. I adore being the only [name]Ursula[/name] I know, and people always remember my name. I also get lots of positive reactions about it. It’s the rare person who will share a dislike of your name with you, so I don’t encounter that a lot. And childhood teasing is common for almost any name–I never felt like it was too mean or any different from what others got. I say–go for it! I would love to see another little [name]Ursula[/name].
[name]Ursula[/name] is my beautiful cousin’s name. She has always loved her name, has never been teased (who does that now???, I’m a teacher and never hear name teasing!) If you love the name, use it!
In all honesty, the sea witch association doesn’t bother me at all; really, there are far worse things to be named after than a cartoon villianess. I love the name [name]Ursula[/name], and would use it in a heartbeat… but my BF isn’t fond of it, so it’s now on my “like/love this name but can’t use it” list. The only time I recall seeing or hearing it in real life was when I was in grade school (about 4th or 5th grade at the time) and I overheard a younger girl call out to her sister [name]Ursula[/name]. I was overjoyed to hear it!
On a side note, I though the nickname [name]Ursy[/name] would be kind of cute.
[name]How[/name] about [name]Drusilla[/name] as an alternative to [name]Ursula[/name]? It has the same type of vibe, but less baggage, though one of [name]Cinderella[/name]'s stepsisters shares the name. That is not as widely known though as the seawitch.
I’m sorry, but I really really have a strong negative reaction to this! It just feels…ugly and mean. Especially with [name]Petra[/name], which is so gorgeous! What about something equally unusual, like [name]Uma[/name] or [name]Imogen[/name] or [name]Ingrid[/name]? Any of those would be great with [name]Petra[/name]. That said, remember that no matter what anyone says, it is YOUR family and that’s all that matters! These boards are a great way to get ideas and feel out the opinions of strangers (which is so helpful!) but ultimately if you love a name you should 100% use it. Congrats and good luck!!
