Ursula

Is [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] usable? Or is the connection to the evil sea witch just too strong? I love the meaning (little bear) and think it’s unusual without being weird and I like the sound. I’m just undecided on how usable it is.

I love [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] as well, so I am interested to hear what other people think.

Hmm, I really want to like it because it is an intriguing name, but there’s something even in the sound that makes me think evil disney villain, sorry.

That said, my cousin did have a friend whose mum was called [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] and she wore it well, so I don’t think it’s entirely unusable. But, everyone did raise eyebrows when they heard her name

I think the ties to the evil sea witch are too strong. It just sounds evil as well. Which is a shame, but I don’t think it’ll ever not be strongly associated to the Disney villain.

I have to agree! But if your brave enough use it! It is a lovely old name with a bad connection. I have had 2 different past patients and my daughters best friends grandma wear the name and it suits them

I think it has a harsh sound although it is probably wearable for certain gals but there are prettier names out there. I think Sula would be cute as a nickname.

I mean for our age group, I think [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] the sea witch would be the first association. But for little kids…I dont know how many of them honestly know about The [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid.

I think it’s definitely usuable! [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] is very lovely, and has a nice vintage sound to it, imo.

… do I think of The [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid, yes. But I also think of the TV show Friends, [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] is [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]'s twin. The reason everyone associates it with these characters is because they dont know anyone else to associate the name to. I’m sure if you use it, a new prospective will occur to others.

Go for it!

I love it! I wish more people would use it to get away from the sea witch association.

I don’t think it’s unusable at all! I didn’t even make the association. [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] is absolutely adorable. If you decide not to, [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] has a similar vibe.

I’d agree with this. The sea witch is pretty much my only association, but I wish it wasn’t. If there were a few little girls running round with this name, I’m sure that popular imagery would soon fade. Also like the nn [name_f]Sula[/name_f] that someone else suggested.

It’s not my style, both for the sound & the association, but I don’t think it’s unusable. If you like the meaning of “bear,” what about…

[name_f]Callisto[/name_f]/[name_f]Kallisto[/name_f]
Arzhela ([name_m]Breton[/name_m]; “bear princess”)
[name_f]Bernadette[/name_f]/[name_f]Bernadetta[/name_f]
[name_f]Bernadine[/name_f]/[name_f]Bernadina[/name_f]
[name_f]Bernarda[/name_f]
[name_m]Espen[/name_m] (Scandinavian, “god bear”)
[name_f]Nita[/name_f] (Choctaw, “bear”)
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] ([name_m]German[/name_m], “bear heart”)

If my husband would go for it, I wouldn’t hesitate using it! Yes people will make little mermaid comments but that’s because that’s their association.

[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] is a refreshing prospect. I’m generally endeared by historically well-established vintage-charm names like this. I think [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] and [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] would be make an ideal sister set.

The Little Mermaid definitely isn’t the only association that comes to mind for me. It is the first, but not the only. (And honestly for a villain she’s a very fun character.)
I also think of Ursula in George of the Jungle and Phoebe’s twin Ursula from Friends.

There’s also the Spanish actress Úrsula Corberó.

I think it’s a very cool name and you shouldn’t let the Disney reference stop you from using it.
I’ve had a pretty large number if people ask me if we picked my son’s name from The Sword in the Stone, and it hasn’t made me like his name any less.

I think it has an interesting sound and a lovely meaning. What about [name_f]Ursa[/name_f]?

[name_m]Just[/name_m] wanted to note, [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] in Friends was also not a great person so that doesn’t help the association for me.

Hmmm. Personally the connection is too strong for me, plus the sounds of the name do not appeal to me. However, I know someone with this name who is extremely smart and kind and I definitely do get those vibes from the name!

I do know a little girl named [name_f]Ursula[/name_f], she was 7 when I met her, she is probably more like 10 now, so if you really love it it can work. However the sound really doesn’t appeal to me, and the witch association, even knowing someone else with that name, is still really strong. (Plus I’ve also heard rumors that Disney is planning on reviving the little mermaid in the future, so that might also revive the ‘sea witch’ association)

I love [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] and actually didn’t even realise it was the name of the sea witch from the [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid until reading this thread. [name_u]Haven[/name_u]'t seen the movie since I was a kid myself. To me it’s a beautiful, strong, not-too-common name, and I would totally use it if my partner liked it too! For me it brings to mind one of my favourite poets, [name_f]Ursula[/name_f] [name_f]Bethell[/name_f], though I doubt anyone else would have that association.

I love it. I would totally have used it but theres no way I could with sister Azula
