Usability of this name?

[name_f]Patience[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] usable is it?

I’ve just been looking at P names to honor my mom and mil, and [name_f]Patience[/name_f] is the one my husband and I like best. I’m not sure if we would use it.

ETA : Pacey would likely be an occasional nickname.

I think it is usable. My sisters and I have virtue names that go from typical to “out there”, and although [name_f]Patience[/name_f] wasn’t used, to me it sounds right at home.

I do not like [name_f]Pacey[/name_f] as a nickname though, [name_f]Patty[/name_f] or [name_u]Pat[/name_u] would be a little better in my opinion.

@blacksail : [name_u]Pat[/name_u] is cute!

I love it but then I’m a fan of virtue names & this is definitely one of the best

[name_f]Patience[/name_f] is a beautiful name. I think it’s very usable.

Personally, I find [name_f]Patience[/name_f] to be too commonly used as a word to work nicely as a name.

I think it’s beautiful and usable.

It think it works well.

One side of me wants to scream, “Yes!”, but I can’t put myself into it wholeheartedly. The thing is, while patience is a wonderful quality, how easy it is for somebody to attain it is largely determined by their innate temperament. For this reason, I can’t feel that [name_f]Patience[/name_f] is quite a fair name to give to a child as a first name, despite how lovely it is.

I might suggest…

[name_f]Phyllida[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f]
Pleasance
[name_f]Priscilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]
[name_m]Parnel[/name_m]

I agree with this. As a middle name it would be fine, but I don’t think it’s a very wearable first name.

I think it’s totally usable, although it could be because I knew a little [name_f]Patience[/name_f] growing up. I think it’s a beautiful name. And [name_f]Pacey[/name_f]'s adorable! The [name_f]Patience[/name_f] I knew went by PayPay as a little girl. I knew her only until about the second grade, so I doubt it stuck past then, haha. [name_m]Warren[/name_m], [name_u]Lee[/name_u], and [name_f]Patience[/name_f] work so well together.

Totally usable, imo. It wouldn’t seem weird among all the other virtue and word names these days

It’s so sweet! I love [name_f]Pacey[/name_f] as a nickname

I’m glad to see some positive opinions; I wasn’t expecting much. My main concern was just how common the word patience is as an every day word. I’m not really concerned with whether the daughter would exercise patience in her day to day behavior. I think of [name_f]Patience[/name_f] as a more long term thing like determination and having a plan, something that everyone can strive for.

I’m not sure, because it is brand new to my list, but [name_f]Patience[/name_f] might be a new favorite!

Definitely usable! It’s very pretty and certainly not a bad quality to be named after. I’m mostly thankful you would be spelling it correctly! I know two girls by this name…one is spelled Payshance and the other is Paeshantz… :frowning: ruined such a pretty name.

I’m not a fan. I only think of Puritans when I hear this name (nothing against them, I just like finding names where I feel little to no associations)

I’m a sucker for virtue names, so I love [name_f]Patience[/name_f] :)! I think it is totally usable. I know a little girl called [name_f]Patience[/name_f], and it is adorable - it suits her perfectly. I am not really a fan of [name_f]Patty[/name_f] or [name_u]Pat[/name_u], but I like [name_f]Pacey[/name_f]! It’s cute, and unique.

I have a friend with a daughter named [name_f]Patience[/name_f] (she’s about eight, I think?). [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t think they’ve ever run into any problems with it. Anyway, I like the name. It’s unexpected and elegant. Plus, it has the added benefit of being familiar but not common.

I’m not a particular fan of [name_f]Patience[/name_f], but I don’t dislike it either. I do think it could be difficult having a name that’s a common word that isn’t usually used as a name, but if this isn’t an issue for you I think it’s totally usable! I loved the Chestnut [name_m]Hill[/name_m] books growing up which had a character named [name_f]Patience[/name_f], I didn’t think anything of it at all or that it was weird. (Not a very nice character, but it’s not a well-known reference at all so you’d be fine  )

It’s not my favorite virtue name by far. I’m leaning towards I don’t really like it as a name.
