Use middle name as a first

In today’s world, do you think we can still get away with using a middle name for day to day life rather than the first name? [name_u]Or[/name_u] does it just seem archaic?

Our grandad goes by his middle name, as does my aunt, but when I have mentioned it for our child, we are met with bewildering looks.

So we both love [name_u]Gabriel[/name_u]. And we love [name_m]Hart[/name_m] as a middle name as it flows well - we think

[name_u]Gabriel[/name_u] [name_m]Hart[/name_m] (last name 1 syllable)

But we’d like to call him [name_m]Hart[/name_m].

We would love your input here and if you think we should go with something else, please suggest something else.

I think it will works fine! I know a [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] who goes by [name_f]Gracie[/name_f], and she doesn’t have any issues

I think it is better to put the name he will be known as in the first name spot. I’m just thinking of him and the inconvenience of having to explain, “Oh, that’s my middle name”, especially when [name_m]Hart[/name_m] [name_u]Gabriel[/name_u] is actually quite nice. If the flow was terrible my answer would be different but it works fine and I think having [name_m]Hart[/name_m] in the first name spot is more important than putting the flow of a name as the first priority. To the majority of his acquaintances, both friends and professionally, he will only be known as [name_m]Hart[/name_m] (last name) as we often don’t know other’s middle names.

Using a middle name as a first name could still work and it probably won’t cause any problems but I think it’s more convenient for everyone if the first name is also the name someone is called.
