Children are a few years off, but I’m trying to acclimate my hubby to names that I like now so that he’ll be easier to convince later.
My dad is the only boy of all his cousins and he had no sons. As a result, my maiden name, [name]Locke[/name] (pronounced [name]LOCK[/name]), dies out after this generation. When we married, DH and I considered preserving it by hyphenating/double-barreling our names (both of us, and then also giving the children the new double-barreled name), but decided it had the potential of causing too many problems down the road.
Now I am enamored with the idea of using [name]Locke[/name] as a first name for a boy. It would be unusual, but I don’t think it’s too outlandish, especially with the surname trend that’s already caught on. I’d considered using it for the middle name, but I’d really prefer it be more prominent since it’s my way of preserving the family name.
So, two questions:
1) What are your thoughts on [name]Locke[/name]? We live in the southern US if that makes any difference. Our last name is [name]Estes[/name] (properly short ‘e’, ESS-tess, but often mispronounced EST-iss) 2) What middle name would you pair with [name]Locke[/name]?
Edit: I’m glad you guys seem to think it could work! Another question is how it might fit with sib names. I’m more worried about a brother than a sister. For example, DH’s top boy name is Gabriel (Gabe), which is much more flowery than the rough, to-the-point sound of Locke. What would you expect Locke’s brother to be called?
[name]Locke[/name] is an alright name- I think of Lost (wasn’t there a character named [name]Locke[/name]? I’m not 100% sure) but what makes it special is the meaning. Since it has value to you, I think it works rather well.
Something softer in the middle I think would work with the gruff and manly [name]Locke[/name]. Some ideas:
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Henry[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Asher[/name]
Sorry for the weak list! [name]Locke[/name] is a hard name to pair with!
There was! And I’m a LOST fan, so there’s some bonus points there. His proper name was [name]John[/name] [name]Locke[/name] though, he just went by his surname, but perhaps it’s set a precedent for it to seem less weird to people if there’s a kid running around called [name]Locke[/name].
I think you’re on to something with [name]Locke[/name] [name]Henry[/name]. [name]Love[/name] [name]Asher[/name] but it is frightfully popular in my circle of friends right now.
I love it when kids have the mom’s maiden name as either their first or middle name, I say use it! Since it’s only one sylible I would use a longer middle with it.
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Nathaniel[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Benjamin[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Samuel[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Sebastian[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Theodore[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]William[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Mathew[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Andrew[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Edward[/name]
I like the longer middles also (since you have a short fn/ln goin on)
I’ll put in another vote for [name]Locke[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]!
Some others not mentioned (off the top of my head):
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Harrison[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Francis[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Weston[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Gregory[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Christopher[/name]
I think it can work with a longer more traditional name in the middle. I liked the suggestions of [name]Locke[/name] [name]Henry[/name] and [name]Locke[/name] [name]Benjamin[/name]. Maybe if [name]Locke[/name] is a little out-there for your husband, you could compromise by letting him choose the middle.
In your situation, I think [name]Locke[/name] sounds like the perfect name. Normally, I’d be relatively mediocre about the name, but with the family significance this name can’t be beat. As far as middle names go, something longish with a bit of a ‘softness’ to it would be nice. [name]How[/name] about:
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Julian[/name]*
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Finnian[/name]/[name]Finnegan[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Amaury[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Aurelio[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Theodore[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Oliver[/name]
I think of Lost too! I think it’s a nice enough surname to put it in the first name spot. I think something soft, yet substantial in the middle, maybe longish works best. [name]Locke[/name] might be mistaken for [name]Luke[/name].
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Elijah[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Gideon[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name]
[name]Locke[/name] [name]Donovan[/name]
[name]Locke[/name]
I love it! I think it is a rather philosophical name for obvious reasons. When I think of the name [name]Locke[/name], I think of an incredibly intelligent boy with deep conviction.
I love it. [name]Locke[/name] is a strong name, and I think it’d work great as a first name. I’m a huge fan of maiden names as first names. I agree about choosing something longer and a bit softer for the middle name. [name]Locke[/name] [name]Nathaniel[/name] was the first name that came to mind.
I think [name]Locke[/name] is a strong and handsome first name, and I love that it is your maiden name. I’m liking the suggestions of softer and more traditional middle names…[name]Locke[/name] [name]Samuel[/name], [name]Locke[/name] [name]William[/name], and [name]Locke[/name] [name]Henry[/name] are my favorites with your last name.
[name]Brooks[/name] is a fave, but I feel like it doesn’t flow nicely with our last name - seems like there are too many “s” and “st” sounds. I do like [name]Teague[/name] and [name]Keane[/name], though! I definitely tend to prefer shorter, stronger names for boys, while DH prefers softer names like [name]Gabriel[/name] and [name]Elias[/name]. It’s been tough finding anything we both like.
