But we’ve been considering [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] a lot lately. We were originally going to use [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] as a middle name to honour my mother but we’ve been thinking about maybe using it as a first name (my Mum would [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it too haha). My father called my mother [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (after the peanuts character, I always thought it was just another nn for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]) and I love the name [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. So does my husband.
There are a couple of issues with calling her [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] though.
I don’t speak with my father anymore, at all and haven’t for about 8-9 years and I worry the name has too strong a connotation with him.
Would it be enough to name her [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]? Or should we put her full name as [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]? I like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] but it’s not my favourite name and I wouldn’t have it on my list if it weren’t for my Mum. I like [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] but then it feels like we’re straying too far from who its meant to be honouring. Are there any other variations of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] aside from the obvious [name_f]Beth[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Lizzy[/name_f], [name_f]Liz[/name_f]? Would [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] be too much of a stretch?
Oh if it helps we have three others, [name_u]Arden[/name_u], [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] ([name_u]Max[/name_u]) and [name_f]Melody[/name_f]. I feel like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] goes best with the other kids but then again I think [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] does as well. Any thoughts? Or other suggestions? Anything would be helpful haha.
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is a fine stand-alone name. It’s lovely as it is, and would go quite well with the rest of your sibset. Only you can decide if it would be too much of a reminder of your estranged relationship with your dad.
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] is an often used nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], so not a stretch at all. There are actually a ton of nicknames for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]-- [name_f]Bess[/name_f], [name_f]Betsy[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_f]Libby[/name_f], etc, etc, etc. Nameberry has a 4 page list of them: 42 Uncommon Nicknames for Elizabeth | Nameberry
Nameberry has a list of nicknames for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] here: 42 Uncommon Nicknames for Elizabeth | Nameberry My favorites are [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], [name_f]Tess[/name_f], and [name_f]Zizi[/name_f]!
If you want to name her [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], though, name her [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]! That’s my mom’s name and it’s 100% normal to just name a kid that, not as a nickname for [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] - it’s been done in my family for generations.
Personally, I love [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] - and it fact, [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (also a family name for me!) is my #1 girl name. And [name_u]Arden[/name_u] is one of our other top names. Seems like we have similar family names and taste!
[name_f]Blythe[/name_f] has recently become one of my favourite names. [name_u]Arden[/name_u] is my step daughters name, I’ve become so fond of it because of how fond I am of her but I can’t take credit for her name. Thank you for the list!! I’m going to have a good look at it. I had no idea [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] was a nn for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and its one of my favourite names. Lots of thinking to be had about this new babies name haha.
Yes, [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] are Nordic/Germanic diminutives of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]! I think it would be lovely to name your daughter [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (or [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]) after your mother and then call her [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] - it’s a nice way to honor your mom and connect your daughter to her, but she would have her own name that just belongs to her as an individual, too.
You have a lot of great options. When I saw that at you liked [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], I wanted to point out that if you name her [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and give her a middle name that begins with a C like [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] you could have both [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and L. C. ([name_f]Elsie[/name_f]).
Variations of [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]:
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucille[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucette[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Luciana[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] (not a variation, but [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] could be a nickname)
[name_f]Lucienne[/name_f] has always been one of my favorite names (with the nickname [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]). It’s gorgeously classy but has a sweet and sassy nickname ([name_f]IMO[/name_f]). Otherwise, I like the suggestions of [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]. Good luck!
