Veronica or Azalea? Name images & Opinions, please!

[name]Hi[/name] Berries! So my husband and I have [name]Veronica[/name] and [name]Azalea[/name] as our top 2 choices for a girl right now. Which do you prefer, and why? I was wondering what people picture when they hear these names. Also, [name]Veronica[/name] would go by “Oni” sometimes.

This would be a sister for our little boy, [name]Felix[/name]

[name]Veronica[/name] is my favorite of the two and I think it fits well with [name]Felix[/name]. It is elegant, classic, and timeless. [name]Azalea[/name] seems really “southern belle”-like to me and I don’t think it would wear as well in adulthood.

I like [name]Veronica[/name] best with [name]Felix[/name]. I picture a spunky, eccentric girl that’s well rounded. For [name]Azalea[/name] I picture more peaceful, artist, imaginative maybe a big dreamer.

I don’t think you could go wrong with either of the names.

Good luck!

I’d pick [name]Azalea[/name], obviously! It makes me think of a smart and ambitious but very friendly girl. [name]Veronica[/name] makes me think of someone who has a lot of friends and is “cool” because both the Veronicas I’ve known were like that.

Definitely [name]Azalea[/name]! Maybe it’s the x and the z or the fact that they’re both a little spunky, retro, and oh-so-COOL! [name]Veronica[/name] kinda sounds like a “mean girl” name. [name]Just[/name] my opinion, though.

Definitely [name]Azalea[/name]! I think [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Azalea[/name] make a great pair, and [name]Azalea[/name] just feels so fresh and memorable to me. To me, [name]Veronica[/name] doesn’t feel timeless at all, it feels very dated to the 80s/90s… Although I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s just that that’s when it was most popular. But I knew a [name]Veronica[/name] that completely destroyed the name for me, and I just can’t appreciate it at all, sorry. I vastly prefer [name]Vera[/name] and [name]Verity[/name].

[name]Azalea[/name] is waaaaaay waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better…Oni is horrifing

I’m afraid I must agree with [name]Eos[/name] that [name]Veronica[/name] sounds like a mean girl name. Plus there’s that Hannukah song, which isn’t bad- actually kind of fun.
[name]Azalea[/name] has a nice sound. The Z in [name]Azalea[/name] stands up to the X in [name]Felix[/name]. Azaleas are rather humble plants, not my favorite, but maybe you have a special connection to the flower? [name]Veronica[/name] on the other hand, is a wonderful genus. [name]Bright[/name] blue, attracts butterflies. Also called Speedwell.
What about [name]Zinnia[/name]? A great flower and a great sound, would go well with [name]Felix[/name].

Oh, that’s a tough one! I like them both. I really like the suggestion above of [name]Zinnia[/name], it would be super cool with [name]Felix[/name]!

Girl names are just so hard for me! I grew up with a girl called Oni, and she was a pretty cool character, which is why I love the nickname. [name]One[/name] minute I am in love with [name]Veronica[/name]/Oni and the next I’m in love with [name]Azalea[/name]. I have also been thinking of using them both… [name]Veronica[/name] [name]Azalea[/name]. If [name]Felix[/name] was a girl we were thinking [name]Bianca[/name]… My true love is [name]Olivia[/name], always has been. But it’s just too popular! I want to love a name like I love [name]Olivia[/name].

[name]Zinnia[/name] is pretty, but I feel like I would like it on someone else’s baby. I just think it might be too much for me.

Thanks you guys!

I really love [name]Veronica[/name] nn [name]Vera[/name] or Vinca. I think it goes well with [name]Felix[/name].

[name]Azalea[/name] is also great with [name]Felix[/name]. Very jazzy & vintagey imo.

Hm… Well [name]Olivia[/name] is very classic and beautiful. Is it definitely off-limits because of its popularity? Could you do some kind of compound name (a la [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Kate[/name]) to make it different? [name]Olivia[/name]-[name]Jane[/name], [name]Olivia[/name]-[name]Cate[/name], [name]Olivia[/name]-[name]Lyn[/name], [name]Olivia[/name]-[name]Lou[/name]…
Other names like [name]Olivia[/name]:
[name]Vivian[/name]
[name]Viviana[/name]
[name]Linnea[/name]
[name]Lavinia[/name]
[name]Lilliana[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Vivica[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name]
[name]Odetta[/name]
Oleandra (ok I just made that one up - a feminized version of oleander, the fragrant white flower)

I prefer [name]Azalea[/name] to [name]Veronica[/name]/Oni. [name]Veronica[/name] reminds me too much of the comics and I just can’t get over that.
[name]Azalea[/name] nn [name]Lea[/name] would be very cute and go well with [name]Felix[/name].

I like the above suggestion of Oleandra but would prefer the original Oleander -> even on a girl.

I like both names, but I would go with [name]Veronica[/name]–crisp, classic, grown-up, but with cute nicknames.

What would keep me from [name]Azalea[/name] is pronunciation. Uh-zale-lee-uh is pretty, but it’s pronounced Uh-zale-yuh where I come from, which I don’t care for at all. Same thing keeps me away from names that end in -ia. I love [name]Julia[/name] (jool-ee-uh), but hate [name]Julia[/name] (Jool-yuh).

Thanks for the suggestions emmabobemma! I do think [name]Olivia[/name] is too popular because it is the #1 girls name in my state :frowning: I love the name [name]Vivian[/name], but someone close to me already has dibs on it.

I really can’t decide on [name]Veronica[/name] and [name]Azalea[/name]… which makes me worried that neither one is right. I just started a new thread on one of my old favorites… [name]Virginia[/name]. I seem to have worries about all my names…

Thanks again, everyone!

Thanks lori! My husband keeps using the name [name]Veronica[/name] every day. A tricky way to get me attached to it! I have to say it’s working. What do you guys think of the nickname Oni? She would go by [name]Veronica[/name] a lot of the time, but I like having another option. Like I mentioned earlier, I knew a really fun, intelligent, and quirky girl who went by Oni, so I think that is why I like the name. [name]Felix[/name] & [name]Veronica[/name] have always ranked on the social security list, so they really are both classic names, which I love

Thanks for all the input Berries!

I don’t know why some people think of [name]Veronica[/name] as a “mean girl” name. (Maybe it’s still left over from the [name]Archie[/name] comics?) The two Veronicas I’ve known were both incredibly sweet - and incredibly gorgeous - and ROCKED their names. ([name]One[/name] meaning, “bringer of victory,” isn’t too shabby, either.) It’s an ancient, ancient name, and you have the legend of [name]Veronica[/name]'s Veil which adds some mystery to it. Throw in the fact that she’s the patron saint of photographers and the glamour of [name]Veronica[/name] [name]Lake[/name] and you have one awesome name. It’s pretty impressive, actually, that it can sound so modern yet have so much history.

I’m not really wild about the nickname Oni - the most common nickname I’ve heard is V or [name]Ronnie[/name]. (I know, I don’t like [name]Ronnie[/name], either.) I met a baby [name]Veronica[/name] whose nickname was Very! I thought that was pretty clever. I think it’s a much better choice than [name]Azalea[/name], personally. I can appreciate [name]Azalea[/name]'s charms, but I would not want to go through life telling people how to pronounce it. [name]Veronica[/name] would work for a girl her entire life - I don’t know if you could say the same for [name]Azalea[/name].

[name]One[/name] - or two? - more things. [name]Veronica[/name] is a term used in bullfighting - it’s a pass made by the matador. (It’s quite interesting if you research it.) [name]Veronica[/name] is also the name of a light blue and purple flowering plant. See all the versatility? :stuck_out_tongue:

I prefer [name]Azalea[/name], I think it’d go better with [name]Felix[/name] in that it is fresh and more uncommon sounding, it’s an underused flower name. Also, the symbolism of the flower: self recognition and caring for yourself. It’s also symbolic of passion, and in [name]China[/name] symbolic of womanhood. It’s a flower that can survive and flourish in conditions were other plants might not.

[name]Veronica[/name] seems dated to the 1980’s, I don’t associate it with being a “mean girl” name, but I do associate it with the 80’s. The meaning of the name itself is lovely being a Latin variation on a name that means “bringing victory”. It is also a botanical name. Veronica (plant) - Wikipedia

As for you loving a name that’s now on the top 10, you could always use [name]Olivia[/name] as a middle name if you were still keen on using it at some point.

I don’t like [name]Azalea[/name] at all, sorry. Unlike other flower names, I can’t disassociate it from the flower ([name]Lilac[/name] is the same thing for me…) I prefer [name]Veronica[/name].
