What do you all think about the name [name_u]Vesper[/name_u]? I love the meaning and the sound of it, but before I even try to sell my husband on it for baby #7, I’m wondering if most people will really associate it with the [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Bond[/name_m] movie (which I’ve never actually seen, so I have no idea what the character was like).
So, what do you think? What associations do you make? Thanks!
I am really starting to like [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] for a girl. But my dad had an Uncle [name_m]Vester[/name_m] who looked like Uncle Fester on The Addams Family, so I think of that.
I love [name_u]Vesper[/name_u], and while I first heard it in the [name_m]Bond[/name_m] movie, it does not bring any negative associations, in a few years no one will even remember that was a characters name, many today even won’t know. It’s on my name list as well.
I’ve seen the [name_m]Bond[/name_m] movie but the association for me isn’t particularly strong. To me it’s a soft, sweet name. Exotic sounding. Weirdly though, it makes me think of vespas.
Interesting! I’ve always heard it used as an evening chapel or prayer service, but “evening star” is even more meaningful! My husband’s beloved grandmother just passed away. Her name was [name_f]Esther[/name_f], and I’ve been trying to figure out a way to honor her without actually using her name (because his family probably would be uncomfortable with it).
I think [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] is pretty. It doesn’t remind me at all of the [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Bond[/name_m] movie since I haven’t seen Casino [name_m]Royale[/name_m]. haha I slightly prefer [name_f]Vespera[/name_f] to [name_u]Vesper[/name_u], though.
I associate it with the [name_m]Bond[/name_m] movie as I had never heard it before and didn’t know it meant anything else. It doesn’t have to be a bad thing though, it’s an exotic-sounding name and if you like it, go for it!
I don’t think children will associate it with the movie as it’ll be too old by then!
“Saintly” isn’t quite the word I would use, just because [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] isn’t a saint’s name as far as I know, but I would call it religious. I’m also fond of the “evening star” meaning. I’m aware of the [name_m]Bond[/name_m] girl association through pop culture osmosis, but that’s not what I think of when I hear the name. The first two things (religious service and evening star) are what I mostly associate [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] with.
As for the name itself, it’s honestly one of my favorites even though it’s not my usual style. I do think it fits in with your sibset style, though!
I really like it, but I do think mostly of Vespas (scooters), and even though I love the evening star meaning a lot, just personally it’s hard for me to disassociate from the scooters. I do also think of the [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Bond[/name_m] character but that’s not a bad thing or a dominant thing to my mind.
I studied Latin for a while and I think of it as being the Latin word for evening and evening star. I like it. Though I’m aware that it does have a liturgical meaning it doesn’t strike me as being a particularly religious name - more modern and off-beat.
I’m a fan of [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_u]Green[/name_u] (the actress who played [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] in Casino [name_m]Royale[/name_m]) so I don’t see the [name_m]Bond[/name_m] association as being a negative one.
I think this is a really cool name but all I can think of is the famous scooter/bike brand [name_f]Vespa[/name_f]. Might not bother some as it’s obviously spelled differently but here in the UK I’m pretty sure that’s what most people would associate it with.
Also, slightly less so it reminds me of the word viper (like the snake) which puts me off it a bit.
