[name_m]Victor[/name_m] is a family name and honours a fantastic man who is no longer with us. [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] has long been a guilty pleasure name for both myself and DH. [name_u]Gale[/name_u] is just a name I like the sound of. I think the single syllable ties the name together, and I like the repeated ‘L’ sound.
In DH’s family it is tradition to go by a middle name rather than first, so day-to-day he would be either [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] or [name_u]Gale[/name_u].
One problem, I don’t like the nickname Uly or Ul or Uls. What do you think of Seas? (and how would you spell it?)
It’s a big fat YAY from me! What an absolutely fantastic name!
I personally prefer [name_u]Gale[/name_u] as a day-to-day name: it’s been put solidly on the boys’ side by the Hunger Games character. Additionally, you say that [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] is a ‘guilty pleasure’ - which sounds more like it should stay more in the middle name spot to me (?) and that you don’t really like any nicknames for it. [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] [name_u]Gale[/name_u] nn [name_u]Gale[/name_u] is fabulous!
Best of luck.
It’s a ‘yea’ for me too. I think it sounds really good. It’s a shame however [name_m]Victor[/name_m] won’t get used, and that you don’t like Uly. I cant really think of any other good nicknames. Def not Seas, however you spell it. [name_f]Lyssie[/name_f] sounds too girly. [name_m]Just[/name_m] [name_f]Lys[/name_f]?
These names all have good nn options: [name_m]Beauregard[/name_m], [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m]… if you did something like [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Beauregard[/name_m] [name_m]Eames[/name_m]…
I think [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] [name_u]Gale[/name_u] sounds great. But if you don’t like any of the nn’s for [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] I’d either use [name_u]Gale[/name_u] as the day to day name or switch out [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] for another one of your options that you could imagine using more. It’s hard to use the “guilty pleasure” name in the middle if the middle is what they will be really called!
[name_f]Love[/name_f] everything about [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] [name_u]Gale[/name_u]. Also love [name_m]Beauregard[/name_m], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_m]Mathias[/name_m] & [name_u]Roux[/name_u] from your list. [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_m]Beauregard[/name_m] [name_u]Roux[/name_u] is another handsome combo.
It gets my resounding “yay”. [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] [name_u]Gale[/name_u] has everything going for it - gorgeous flow, handsome and strong sound, beautiful looking on the written page, special meaning etc…The middle spot is the perfect place to be “guilty pleasure” names. I would call him “[name_u]Gale[/name_u]” if you have to choose a nn.
[name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] [name_u]Gale[/name_u] is handsome, strong but not “butch”, and sounds very intellectual. It’s great that it has so much meaning for you. I don’t think [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] really needs a nickname, it’s only three syllables and lots of people with three-syllable names don’t use one. Lots of people come up with their own nicknames not derived from their given names, if he wants one when he’s older.
I like the name, but you’re right, it’s hard to peg a good nn for [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]. And, just my opinion, but why not [name_m]Grant[/name_m] instead of [name_u]Gale[/name_u]? In any case, of your other suggestions, I liked [name_m]Beauregard[/name_m], [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m], [name_m]Mathias[/name_m], & [name_u]Roux[/name_u](the last two are my favorites.

Gigantic Yes! [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] [name_u]Gale[/name_u] is weighty and literary without being over-the-top. Your other names are nice, but [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] [name_u]Gale[/name_u] is a solid top choice.
[name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] [name_u]Gale[/name_u] is a strong, handsome combo. I like that [name_m]Victor[/name_m] honors a special person.
I absolutely love the combo! [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] [name_u]Gale[/name_u] is a magnificent name.
I agree with those who said to use [name_u]Gale[/name_u] as the name he will most often be called. I personally am a big fan of [name_u]Gale[/name_u], and unfortunately there isn’t much you can do with [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] as far as nicknames go. Unless you are planning to have him go solely by [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] (which would be quite possible) then I think [name_u]Gale[/name_u] is your winner. Another idea would be to use [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_u]Gale[/name_u] which has an equally nice flow to it and then he could go by [name_m]Victor[/name_m] most of the time. Good luck! =]
Oh my. I absolutely LOVELOVELOVE [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] [name_u]Gale[/name_u]. And I agree that [name_u]Gale[/name_u] would be best to use as a day-to-day name. (Or, you could just shorten [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] to the first initial. “Hey, U…” I kid.)
Wow I am taken aback by your overwhelmingly positive reactions!!!
Makes a change from friends and family’s comments of ‘you want to name your child WHAT!?’
I like the idea of using [name_u]Gale[/name_u] as the everyday name, or perhaps swapping [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] with another name from my list (Although gosh darn it I love [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], just a shame I don’t like any nn for it. Maybe I could learn to love Uly?)
emsky - I actually already have that exact combo [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Beauregard[/name_m] [name_m]Eames[/name_m] on my shortlist!!
esrever88 - Haha I loved the ‘Hey U’ comment!
oceansunrise - Wow thanks for the combo suggestions! Many of the names are not for me, but I would loooove to see them on other babies! [name_f]Garland[/name_f] is another guilty pleasure for me, I think it sounds much better on a little man than little lady personally!
