Vilja, how does this sound in English?

It is a nordic scandinavian girls name. But we want a name that is beautiful in English too. What do you think?

is it VIL-ya? I like it but some may find it strange because it is not familiar, and some will think it’s said with a j as in jar. There are some Nordic names that are forms of names found everywhere. People will find these more familiar. But it’s up to you. [name]Do[/name] you have any others in mind we could think about?

Thanks, yes It is VIL-ya

Alternatoves are:

[name]Hennie[/name]
[name]Iben[/name] [name]Sofie[/name] (pronounced E-ben)

I really want a Scandinavian name and have posted a question here earlier.

Grateful for your feedback!

I looked at your other message.

[name]Ava[/name] - Well, I like it pronounced either way, but yes, it’s extremely popular right now. If you were staying in the US you might want to reconsider it if you didn’t want her to be one of many Avas, but as you say it is rare in Denmark, and if you go to Latin [name]America[/name] they will say it [name]Ah[/name]-va.
[name]Iben[/name] [name]Sofie[/name] - you will have to tell people how to pronounce it, but that’s OK. They’ll get to know it. To me it does not seem that similar to [name]Ivan[/name], which can be pronounced two ways, EYE-vin (Americanized) or ee-vahn.
[name]Hennie[/name] - I agree it’s more of a nickname, usually spelled [name]Henny[/name] in English and not used much here these days, probably because of the similarity to the slang word.
Vilja - I like it and once everyone realizes the J is like a y, it’s not hard to say.

Recently I looked at lists of the most popular names in Scandinavian countries and noticed that many of them were the same names popular everywhere else, like [name]Emma[/name], though I’m not sure all of them are pronounced the same. There were a lot of interesting names on there too, that we don’t have here or have in a different version.

I agree that living in New [name]York[/name] City, names from other cultures are not a problem. I think you should pick the one you like the best.

I think [name]Hennie[/name] is adorable! High-energy and pretty. Vilja is pretty, but it feels more serious. I guess it depends on what kind of personality your little girl shows!
