Viola

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]!

[name_m]Just[/name_m] curious for middle name suggestions for [name_f]Viola[/name_f].

Also, do you guys tend to say Vee-ola or Vy-[name_f]Ola[/name_f]?

Thanks in advance!

I say vy-ola.

I love [name_f]Viola[/name_f]! I think [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is traditionally pronounced Vy-oh-la, but I knew a [name_f]Viola[/name_f] who pronounced it Vee-oh-luh. So I think it could go either way.

I say vy-oh-la. I’ve also heard VYE-ah-lah, which I’m not sure how I feel about, but I think [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is really nice. Unusual and musical and literary. I tend to prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Violetta[/name_f], personally, but I love the tie to [name_f]Viola[/name_f] from Twelfth [name_m]Night[/name_m], which is my favorite Shakespearean play.

What about:

[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Zoe[/name_f]

[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Tess[/name_f], [name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], and [name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]!

Good luck!

Thanks! I was reading another forum where they most said it as Vee-ola and said that is the correct pronunciation, so I’m torn. I like the nickname Vy for [name_f]Viola[/name_f] but I also want to use the name properly. At the same time, I don’t want her to have to correct everyone either

I say Vee-o-lah, but could easily be traine dot say Vy-o-lah.

I say Vy - o- la. because I say [name_f]Violet[/name_f] as Vy- let. ( I’m from Australia, btw )
I like [name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f], [name_f]Elaine[/name_f], [name_f]Bethany[/name_f], [name_f]Lisette[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Leanne[/name_f], [name_f]Leonie[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_u]Skylar[/name_u], [name_f]Amber[/name_f], [name_f]Janine[/name_f], [name_f]Louise[/name_f], [name_f]Caitlyn[/name_f] & [name_f]Merrilyn[/name_f]

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] is like Vy-let, but I’m like 90% sure [name_f]Viola[/name_f] is Vee-ola, because that’s how you pronounce the stringed musical instrument, [name_f]Viola[/name_f].

I knew a crotchety old church lady named [name_f]Viola[/name_f] (Vye-ola). Consequently, I’m not a fan.

I say Vee-oh-luh. I think Vy-oh-luh is more common, but I think the former pronunciation sounds a lot more beautiful, and isn’t reminiscent of the word vile. I really love [name_f]Viola[/name_f]! I have [name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] [name_u]Rue[/name_u] on my list, and I also like:
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Fae[/name_f]/[name_f]Faye[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Kitty[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Demelza[/name_f]

I ditto what @myosotis has said.

It is said “Vye-ola” just like the musical instrument of the same name.

Actually, I play the viola (stringed instrument, bigger and lower-pitched than a violin) and it’s pronounced Vee-ola. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this clears up any confusion

To spell names phonetically, it helps to capitalize the stressed syllable, and hyphenate each syllable. vy-OH-luh does not equal VY-oh-luh. Neither does VEE-oh-luh equal vee-OH-luh.

The musical instrument is vee-OH-luh. I’ve only heard the name pronounced VY-oh-luh. Yes, it does sound a bit like VILE-uh. But that’s not really noticeable, it’s a lovely name.

The musical instrument is pronounced Vee-ola.

Yes, I know the pronunciation for the instrument is Vee-[name_f]Ola[/name_f], my main question is when seeing the baby name if most people associate with the instrument or the Shakespearean character (which is Vye.)

Doesn’t really sound like “vile” at all to me, since it has three distinct syllables. [name_m]Just[/name_m] curious if I ever used the name how back and forth the pronunciation would be.

To tell the truth, I didn’t know there was a Shakespearean character with the name…I think most associations will come from the [name_f]Viola[/name_f] flower, which is pronounced VYE-ola. Most people don’t even know the instrument exists :frowning:

I had no idea there were multiple pronunciations… the instrument is vee-OH-la, so I assumed that was the only pronunciation of the name.

It seems strange to take a real word and change the pronunciation when you use it as a name… that would be like pronouncing [name_u]River[/name_u] as [name_m]RYE[/name_m]-ver or [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] as cuh-DENSE.

[name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f] are all I got and I say vy-ola.
