Violet - how popular is it?

I love [name]Violet[/name] but I’m worried it might be getting too popular. Also my husband thinks it screams “celebrity baby name”. What do you all think?

In 2008, it wasn’t even in the top 1000, so it’s definitely not very popular. But maybe it’s more about trendiness than popularity.

Anyway, I think it’s a nice name, and it doesn’t seem to trendy to me.

Oops. It’s actually in 195th place, but that’s still not very high.

Actually, the above is incorrect: [name]Violet[/name] is in the top 200 girl’s names.
Popularity in 2008: #184.

It indeed is becoming a trendy name for several reasons – celebrities have used it, it is a floral/nature name, and it has a grandma/vintage feel – all reasons that it may continue to move up the popularity list and become more common in the coming years.

[name]Violet[/name] is a lovely name but if you are concerned about it appearing too trendy you might consider some similar but less popular names like [name]Lilac[/name], [name]Viola[/name], [name]Primrose[/name], [name]Petal[/name], [name]Zinnia[/name], [name]Tulip[/name], [name]Aster[/name] etc.

Good luck!

Thanks! [name]Aster[/name] is my other choice and i think it’s becoming the frontrunner

I know how you feel! I absolutely [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Violet[/name] but fear it’s popularity. Luckily though, I’m not having kids anytime soon! Good luck!

In the last SSA list, [name]Violet[/name] is about the same rank as my name! I like that little tidbit, because how many baby Karens have you heard of? I think since it’s been since last [name]May[/name] that the ranks were announced, it will rise significantly though. At least according to places like here, a lot of people have chosen this name in 2009, so probably if you are due after Mother’s [name]Day[/name], put it on your list cautiously. [name]Even[/name] if it’s not a huge increase, it seems like it will continue to get more and more popular over the next few years. Also, if you love the name, I would measure that against how much you care if it’s popular. Some people will not tolerate a potential other-person-with-the-same-name in a classroom or even grade, or living on the same street, while some people will rather the name just be unpopular enough for no one in their family or circle of friends to have chosen it yet. If the latter is your case, maybe you can lock it in.
